I learned that problem from Top Gear UK when they had a BMW Z3. When they were in the Middle East, the car had to have the head gasket replaced because it overheated.

Thanks Nathen, I’m in the process of doing this exact job. If both the head and block pass the straight edge test is it ok to just replace the head gasket and not deal with resurfacing the head? Thanks for all the videos since I bought my zed 3 I’ve watched quite a few

Great video. I have a 91 e30 318i with bad head gasket. Is it pretty much the same to change out? Thanks ahead

Hi. I see you didn't use the cam locking tools. I also don't have one. Can it be done. Thanks

The hard coolant hose you pointed out was disintegrating on mine when I replaced the starter. Luckily I saw it and replaced it while I was down in there. $15 piece that can cause a world of hurt if you don't catch it in time.

Hi and thanks for very good video. My local mechanic did the head gasket due to oil leak but it still leaks oil. I have removed the head cover gasket and like to know what is the re torqueing value for the heads as you mentioned on the video that it needs to be re torque in order not to leak form the gaskets All gaskets has been replaced by the local mechanics
@mistermatsuda5 жыл бұрын
That was most likely the valve cover gasket. If it still leaks then they may have used a bad quality gasket or didn't install it correctly. Head gaskets are a much bigger PITA!

Love your videos Nathan. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm thinking of buying a used BMW. I have never owned one. I like working on cars and do most of my own repairs / maintenance. My experience includes most basic car maintenance, brakes, motor mounts, a clutch on a Honda Accord, valve cover gaskets, catalytic converters, shocks, fuel pumps, and I recently successfully rebuilt the engine and cylinder head off a 93 geo metro i picked up for $200, It runs great now and Ill be able to sell it for a small profit. All my car knowledge has come from google and awesome people like you who share their knowledge. I want to get something fast and classy and a bit more of a challenge to work on preferably stick shift, 4 doors. Your videos have given me more confidence to take the plunge. I'm just not sure what model to get. Any advice or recommendations on if you think I can handle it based on what I'v told you? What year or model should I consider getting? Are the V8's harder to maintain or work on? Is it worth it to get something newer like 2006 or should I get a older model? Do you think Kelly blue book is a good metric to base a purchase off of? I know that's a lot of question's and if you have a chance to reply I would really appreciate it. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

the "TU" has a bulge on the front of the engine cover. This is the black cover with white stripes. The Non vanos (M62) the black cover is flat...I.e. has no bulge

I have a question about this because I'm doing the same thing. when you go to take off the timing chain is there and special tools I will need or should I be able to just take the timing chain off after removing the tensioner?
