BMW E39 530i Supercharged Budget Track Car - 300bhp ESS Supercharger kit Drive and review | OVERTAKE

Welcome to another update on the BMW E39 530i budget Track Car project. We have fitted an ESS Supercharger kit to the Overtake E39 530i sport, which we now estimate to produce around 300bhp, up from the 230bhp standard. It's safe to say with the huge weight stripped out of the car and the increase in around 70bhp, the car is transformed and really shifts!
The M54 B30 engine is running well, delivering a nice linear power delivery and proving to be great fun to drive. It has an LSD fitted to help with the power delivery and we can't wait to try it out on track. This has been a DIY project (albeit with some very knowledgeable hands at work) and the costs have been kept as low as possible to see what is possible with this left field choice of a track car.

I just got my 2003 E39 530i on the road this past week. She's bone stock but I paid about 2,100 bucks (a hair above 1,500 quid) for it, also from Facebook. She had only 127k miles on her at purchase and I saw Jeremy Clarkson take an E39 528xi to Africa only for the old girl to handle the challenge like an absolute champion so, as you can imagine, I couldn't resist. I don't plan on any modifications as the M54D30 that she has is working perfectly and she's certainly a lovely daily driver. Still have a few kinks that need to be worked out, like the sunroof needs new rails and the front shocks need tending, but it's a true pleasure to drive. It's nice to live vicariously through you lot as you take an E39 530i to the Moon with your modifications. Just be cautious not to over-boost the M54 and send a piston rod to see Jesus.

I must admit I cried a little when I saw that gutted interior (one of the E39s best assets IMO) but getting a 6-cylinder RWD executive car of this size down to around 1300kg is pretty damn impressive! They handle well for a big car anyway, so I bet it feels pin sharp now with the coilovers and LSD too.

I could see some weight savings with the front seats but the rest is negligible. And you're right, they have great interiors. One of the reasons I love these cars.

@@bag2963 because in the end it really doesn't add up to that much weight I've done it before it's not as big of a difference as you would think. It's not worth listening to all the tinny rattling and road noise you get.

@@bag2963 I would say the majority of that 220lb was the front seats. The upper rear seat May weigh a little bit but the lower rear seat really doesn't weigh much. Not to mention any weight taken off the rear of the car is putting more on the nose. I'm simply saying the benefit does not outweigh the cost. Pros and cons. I did the exact same thing to a car when I was 16. Simply because I couldn't afford horsepower. Now when I look back on it it was foolish.

Got a nice 5 speed green slate metallic 530i a couple years ago in LA for 1400. Dont feel the least bit bad about throwing money at it and getting quality parts because its such a quality drive.

Excellent video ! As an e39 owner myself I enjoyed the Bimmer banter throughout! Have you had any engine cooling issues with this supercharger kit? 70bhp increase isn't massive but combined with all the weight shaving it looks like huge fun!

The 530i sounds a great idea, as you say 330i's with a manual are getting a bit silly! It feels like only a few years ago when you could pick up an E46 M3 for 7/8k. The E39 is a fantastic all rounder, enjoy yours!

Z3s with the 3 litre started to move up years ago. And clean 330s are getting hard to find and decent ones prices are getting stronger. 530 is the next carrier of this engine to move up, since theyre actually not that heavy. X5 obvs different. Z4 newer gen..

The engine is what makes me not want a 540i every owner I talked to said it will most likely cost 10k or repairs within a years or two the timing guides I’m chain look like a nightmare to do in the v8 and working on the engine without pulling also looks like a nightmare

The 530i also has a rack and pinion vs the steering box in the 540i. Regarding the 6MT, I have retrofitted one (ZF) from a pre-LCI E60 but had to modify the transmission axle. One can also fit the Getrag from the E46 M3.

@@danarbuckle6640 same, but topaz blue. Also no mods, beige interior. And i actually don't have a problem with the automatic. Had a fluid and filter change at 135k miles and it shifts fine. I almost no longer regret selling my e30 325 touring... Almost!

Great to see the E39 still going strong from the early videos. Supercharging is an option I hadn’t really thought of for the M54. Much more drivability, the temptation to carry this out on my car. Well, maybe best sort out the rust next.

This is such a great car, and an under-exploited platform for track builds. You are a pioneer sir! Compared to an e46, the suspension design is better, the unsprung weight is less, the rear subframe mounts don't rust out, the body and chassis is stiffer, the track width is more, the coefficient of drag is less, and to me it looks better too. Can I ask if your 1300 kilos included yourself as a driver when cornerweighting? Was that weight before or after the supercharger kit?

Did the same thing as a teenager to a car. Took all the interior out. Now looking back realize how dumb it was and made a negligible difference. How much weight do you think you actually saved compared to having a car that's ugly inside and noisy.

I know there are a ton of factors; A TON! Do you feel in the U.S. market, if????? Able to aquire a used "kit", from what your aware is on the market; Can the tune & extras be done for around $5,000.??? Expecting at least half of it, or more, to be spent for the blower???

How did you get an lsd on there? Which unit is it?

It will either be a retro fit from an e34 swap or an m5 rear driveshaft splice, or racingdiffs (with clutches) or quaiffe. To me quaiffe is the best option.

New the kit will be five grand without fitting... Plus a remap 500 (don't think he did one).. Lsd fitted 1500. All done figure on ten grand (uk pounds). Probably same in dollars because everything is cheaper in USA)

I was going to get a 530i but I have a 528i Done some up grades it's now running at 225 bhp & will out drive a 530i I've drag races two & beat both

@@Vicman245 well for starters remove the double rear back box that was has heavy has a 5 yr old child & tuck it straight though from cat back. That alone will release around 10/15 bhp. Then done an air intake improvement & finnaly a remap that has removed all the flat spots & realy improved mid rang revs car now holds gears better & pulls harder all was very little cost & she is better on fuel also so win win
