Jump to the 11:02 mark to begin watching the fuel filter replacement steps. Vacuum line repair steps begin at the start of the video. I talk too much at times, but you will learn the steps for replacing your fuel filter. For BMW fuel filters with built-in pressure regulators and a vacuum line that can crack and cause a vacuum leak.

Success! I had to do it in the garage due to driveway incline and I would rather blow up the house and car than be crushed by my car. Those low pressure hoses were really degraded after just 3 months. SAE J30R7 fuel hose is a no no on our cars and now I know. Didn't spill more than a couple of drops on me, more came out pulling into the garage. Celebrated by ordering a PC 7424 DA buffer/polisher. I have had her since Sep last year, flew to VA and drove it back to OK. Instantly fell in love. :)

Awesone thanks for the video. Pretty sure this is what was causing mine to run lean. Hose was completely severed but easy fix. Did the spark plugs, oil and filter at the same time. I only drove it like 10 miles but it'd thrown the code in that distance before, and sounded really clean now.

Very helpful and detail. I inspected mine (2001 330Ci) last year, and discovered the rubber fuel hoses needs and vacuum line are harden. They seems to disintegrate after 10 yr, and the rubber has shorter life than Honda/Toyota. I live in cold climate, and still these rubber doesn't last with low "heat." Owned several 10+ yr cars, and it becomes norm to replace rubber hoses and vacuum hoses as SOP (standard operation procedure) and preventive maintenance. Regular mechanics or dealer will charge lots of time and money to perform proper troubleshooting, and makes it lower TCO (total cost of ownership) if we replace all hoses ourselves to minimize common old car issue (BMW just has more old car issue as they are consider old when step into 5 yr instead of 10)

Tyler and fellow ZHP owner -- thanks for commenting! The long plastic portion of the vacuum line was in perfect shape. It was the rubber hose sections that fit on both ends that were toast. That cover is much more difficult to deal with that it should be, for sure! Sorry to hear about the leak -- best of luck getting it all taken care of. Cheers!

Alan, thanks for the kinds words -- appreciate it. Making these videos is tough work, I've learned since doing my first one here. Kudos to all others who have taken the time to document their car repairs. If I had to do it over again I'd do a few things differently to reduce the length of the video a little, but I'm glad you see the value in the vacuum line segment. Overall I did want to capture some of what I wasn't seeing in other fuel filter videos, so your feedback is very helpful. Thanks!

Was helpful. I put a new filter on today and everything went ok, looked ok (cut new tubing for vacuum line-old one was broken, almost severed, at the filter nozzle- and pieces for fuel lines also) until I started the car up when I was done and it was leaking/spraying out. I should have put new clamps on instead of the old ones back on, right? I used pliers to turn the old ones because there was no place for a flathead, and couldn't get them tight like they were before. Tomorrow I'm going to replace them with new ones. Hope that stops the leaking. Maybe this will get rid of the 2 engine codes. P0171,P0174.

Yes, it certainly would. If there's a hole or crack in the line, then you have a vacuum leak and you'll get rough idling and running. It's not hard at all to replace and the cost of a new length of hose is very cheap.

Hello Klaas -- It was time to change the filter per the maintenance schedule I follow (I change mine every 50K), but I was also experiencing an occasional slight hesitation, especially above 3,000 RPM. Changing the filter solved that problem, this time. That kind of hesitation could be caused by other things too, of course.

Graham, sorry for the slow reply. I'm sorry but I don't know the size of those hoses in particular because I didn't replace them on my fuel filter. The only "hose" I replaced was the vacuum line that runs from the intake boot down to the fuel filter. I suggest taking one of the old hoses to the parts store and matching the size that way. I'm certain they are a standard size.

I hear you -- winter is the "no fun" time of year to work on your car if you can't pull it into a garage to stay out of the weather. But, yes, a disconnected vacuum hose could surely cause that issue. Then again, so can a handful of other things. But start with the easiest thing first, which is your instinct -- check that vacuum hose out when you can.

Hi Luigi, Firstly thank you for posting such a detailed video, you've explained everything so well and have given me enough confidence (someone who's not very mechanical) a solid understanding on how to change their fuel filter with ease. So let me begin, I began to change my upper intake boot as it had a large cut in there, I then realised my lower intake boot was ripped too. As i changed both, it came to my attention that my pressure regulator vacuum line was cut and certainly did not run into my fuel filter, in fact the pipe itself was far too short to even reach. I plan to order a new one tomorrow but my question to you is as followed; Once you feed the line through to the engine bay and beneath the car. Do you need to unscrew plannels to feed the pipe toward the back of the car or do you simply pull the pipe towards the back and only remove the panel covering the fuel filter? I'm quite unclear about how the vacuum line travels from the front to the back of the car. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
@luigiZHP
@luigiZHP 7 жыл бұрын
Ahmed, you are welcome. Sorry for my slow reply, however, There is nothing in the way of the vacuum hose from where it connects to the fuel filter to where it travels up and through the engine compartment and to where it connects to the intake boot. The only thing you'll need to remove in this entire process is the shield that covers the fuel filter itself. Does that make sense?
@ahmedhussain2486
@ahmedhussain2486 7 жыл бұрын
luigiZHP Hi Luigi, That makes perfect sense. I purchased a new vaccum hose yesterday from the dealership however it looks too small in length to fit from the intake boot to the fuel filter. Could you kindly confirm if this is the correct part before I conduct any work? The part number is 13327561060. Is this the correct hose? The length is no longer than my arm and I'm a little concerned that the hose may not reach the fuel filter. Many thanks.

fuel pressure and rubber... 7.9mm fuel injection hose not fuel or vacuum hose. small hose can be replaced with standard vacuum line 1/8in. watch routing for kinkyness.

Was this a 4 or 6 cylinder? I'm smelling gas and I believe it's the rotten vacuum tubing up near the engine but when I popped the hood on the BMW, couldn't find the connection I was looking for and it didn't look like yours. Weird.

Hi Carl. Thanks for your question and for watching. This procedure is shown on the M54 6 cylinder engine. If you're smelling gas, check the fuel hoses as well.

Hello imfittin2 -- Yes, do make sure those hose clamps are in good shape and able to provide the tightness needed. Easiest way to ensure that is to replace the old ones with new, you are correct.

Hello Jose. Yes, if this vacuum line is cracked that could cause a misfire.

What were the symptoms that you were seeing when the vacuum hose was damaged? My car was throwing lean codes and would stutter very badly at idle and low rpm driving. I found my rotted hose before this video and replaced it along with my filter. Car seems fine now but codes haven't reset themselves yet. I also changed out several intake side parts (intake boots, MAF, and a used throttle body).

Tony Stark Missing throughout the full RPM range while driving/shifting. You probably already have, but try disconnecting then reconnecting your battery to reset your CEL.

+Tony Stark I have a rotten hose near the F connector. What I found is that the leak at this hose actually cause nothing obvious. I don't get CEL, INPA code, idle issue, lost power at high/low RPM. Just sharing my experience based on 2001 330Ci coupe

Aww damn it.. I thought i had found my problem then... But my y2k e46 323i has not got that kind of system. It is all different. I think my fuel pressure regulator must be elsewhere..

The old location for the regulator was up near the fuel rail and injectors. Does the same thing but not attached to the filter.

that hose is not a normal round hose it is a cuved piece of rubber that is form to make the curve.if you use a regular piece of hose to repair it will pince the hose and not be able to perfom its duty.good luck.you must have a curved rubber part or in just alittle time the hose will go flat on you.also cause smells in car when defective and hard to find.

Curt, thanks for taking the time to comment. I think I understand what you're saying, but I haven't had any troubles with my vacuum hose repair. I've checked it periodically since posting this video over a year and a half ago. No pinching or troubles with the straight piece of hose I used.

What is the size of the new hose you used to connect it to the boot?
@luigiZHP
@luigiZHP 4 жыл бұрын
I can't recall the size, Ernesto. However, it is a standard vacuum line size, and if you bring a section of the old line to the parts store, they can help you match it up.
