Very nice. As a former certified mechanic, UK and Canada, now thankfully many years retired, this is as good as an instructional video can get. Judging from the air filter in my own Bimmer which at 210k kms looks original (!) , identical model, I doubt the plugs have ever been changed either. Time for a look. One comment, a small smear of anti-seize on the plug threads wouldn't come amiss, though I expect the next plug change will be done by the next owner.

What if a plug is so very tight it won’t turn? I’m afraid to put too much pressure on the ratchet.
@MTechGuy3 жыл бұрын
With the engine cold, spray the plug with a small amount of penetrating lube, try tightening it slightly first, then loosen it a small amount at a time. Make sure to soak up all the lube before winding the plug right out

might be a dumb question/request, but can you please provide the sizes of the extensions that you used? (both the long and small ones)
@MTechGuy3 жыл бұрын
Can’t remember now, I think the locking extension to access the plugs was a 6”. I find it’s worth having a few different sizes in the tool box, then you can make up the size to suit yourself. Thanks for watching!

How did you diagnose and identify the ignition coil giving you trouble?
@MTechGuy Жыл бұрын
Swap it with one of the other coils, if the fault moves to the new cylinder, that will identify the bad coil

Not as straight forward for the early models: Need to undo 12 more bolts to remove the coils (2X 6 mm bolt per coil)

Hi. As the owner of a 5 series with the same engine as your X5, I find your content of great interest. I gather that you are in NZ, but your accent says that you originate in the North of England. Manchester? Am I right?

How did you know that the coil was defective and that it wasn't just the spark plug?
@MTechGuy Жыл бұрын
Normally swap the coil with another cylinder, if the fault moves- it’s the coil

@@MTechGuy Thanks for posting this too. I never knew that my car even had coils until one failed just recently. I also didn’t know spark plugs need to be swapped out every 100K miles or so. My X5 2006 3.0i just passed 70K. So my question is, should I preemptively have the spark plugs swapped out? Or perhaps wait till the car is closer to 100K?
@MTechGuy2 жыл бұрын
@@bubblebathgirl I would do the spark plugs now if it where my car, old/worn spark plugs can cause the coils to fail

Hey anybody ever have a seized spark plug? I’ve decided to leave it for now and just replace all the other ones as the cylinder itself wasn’t misfiring, but eventually it’s gonna have to go, any ideas?
@MTechGuy Жыл бұрын
Spray a little WD40 down there, let it sit for few hrs then break the spark plug loose going easy (use a T bar if you have one for even torque) keep turning the plug backwards and forwards slowly until you get it out
@stefskrynnik3189 Жыл бұрын
@@MTechGuy hey so wd40 didn’t help, she’s got no play going either way, for now I’ve just replaced the rest and she’s running fine, gonna try to get back at that last spark plug soon, needed my baby on the road for now though, my worry is breaking the spark plug inside or messing the threading up
@MTechGuy Жыл бұрын
Remove it when the engine is cold, sounds like you need a decent size breaker bar. It’ll come out, just go steady with it and back and forth
