BMW e60/e61 Polyurethane Bushings Rear Sway Bar Install
Hi everyone and welcome to another Bimmer Fixer video.
In this video I will so how to install Polyurethane bushes on the rear anti roll bar/sway bar on an e60 /e61. The main advantages of the Polyurethane bushes is that they are slightly stiffer than the normal rubber ones meaning less roll in the corners and they last a lot longer due to being made of Polyurethane. It’s a fairly easy job to do and definitely worth doing if yours have done a lot of miles.

A good tip when fitting poly bushes to sway bars to stop the possibility of these ever sqeaking in the future is to wrap the bar where the bush contacts it with plumbers PTFE tape and then grease over this and then fit up the bush, this way if the grease ever fails you won't develop a squeak.

@Rod Panhard Thats a great tip! Thank you if they ever do start squeaking I'll be sure to crack out thr PTFE tape. 👍🏻👍🏻

So i have a 530i e60, left rear started squeeking ALOT whenever there was any uneveness in the road or going over bumps, it was horrible. I changed the Rear Lower Arm bushings to PSB polyurethane ones (they are called PSB 653 and 654), it stopped for a week or 2 then the squeeking came back. I took everything apart again and really greased them up literally everything around them in them evrything, still a horrible squeeking noise. Really can't seem to figure out what is squeeking, do you have any ideas?

@mawival Hi, sorry for the delay! Sounds interesting and you have done everything i would have done first too. My guess would be sway bar or shock/strut even possibly rear subframe. Let me know if you find the location of the squeaking. If its not these them we can have another think.

@The Bimmer Fixer I removed the stiffening plate from under the sump and jacked the sump with a trolley jack with a block of wood in-between. Haynes manual suggested this was OK and I couldn't identify any more suitable places. My block of wood covered 3 edges of the sump so I wasn't super worried about it cracking, but on a bigger 3l engine I might be. Also, using a trolley jack comes with some risk... you know when you get a trolley jack quiet high and they roll forwards a bit because the jacking pad follows an arc on a trolley jack, well that's pretty scary when your engine is balanced on it! I did one mount at a time. The nearside one had slightly more difficult bolt access and was easy to pull out once undone. The offside one had easy bolt access but was hard to wiggle out past the power steering hoses.

Now that you’ve done bothfront and back what’s the main difference in the feel when you drive? Thanks for the videos.
@TheBimmerFixer
@TheBimmerFixer Жыл бұрын
@derin111 Hi, well it definitely handles so much better in the corners and bends especially on roundabouts I found myself going around the roundabout 2 or 3 times on the test drive because I couldn't believe the difference. I didn't realise how much the old bushes had failed until I replaced them. I would even say its handling better in a straight line just feels more planted and stable. 👍🏻

@TheBimmerFixer Жыл бұрын
@Austin TM Yeah definitely, a lot more than I was expecting. I took it for a drive with just the front done to see if I could feel the difference in the front end and the back just didn't feel right. Once I had done the rear too I could feel a massive difference. Funny thing is before I changed them I didn't really think they were that bad. It wasn't until I changed them to polyurethane I notice how bad the original ones were.
