I'm getting approx 45mpg most of the time on average, on the motorway I get about 55mpg. For a 3 litre high performance car it's very economical too. Very very happy with it indeed.

The 330d is a good car too, slightly cheaper (which you can send on the PPK) which makes it buttery smooth :) but it has the same problems as the 335 in that you can easily do 100+ mph and don't realise it due to the low noise. however the turbo seems to be quicker on the F30 330d on the PPK than the standard 335 turbo (without a remap). Good video mate :)

Had my F30 335 sine new in 2017, it’s just turned 81k with little fault. Lower arm bushes fail after around 70k, it loves rear pads every 18k, tyres are expensive and you MUST bin the run flats as the difference is amazing! Wiper motors are also prone to becoming noisy and need replacement. I love this car and am already looking at the M340 x drive as a replacement in August 2019. Yes interior is dull and steering feels a little electronic for my liking but they are a perfect every day drive with a good MPG return, these 335 pull like a train. Watch out for your EGR valve igniting the engine bay pre 2017 (all diesels).

Nice review video, mate! I have a 335D Touring [late 16 plate], which sadly i won't have too much longer, but you're right, that time period was the cheapest to get the car (so lucky!) and i will sorely miss it mostly coz of that "3-car overtake" torque, just makes the car so easy and effortless to drive at any speed, though u do feel the weight at low speed/revs (putting it into manual gears helps any low speed sluggishness). Speaking of weight, you will find it wears the front tyres out twice quicker than the rears. I will miss the throaty sound of the exhaust when pushing too! The roads around East Sussex are much nicer to drive than in London, but if u really want somewhere for the car to shine then u have no choice but to go up to the North - England/Wales/Scotland [or maybe even over to the continent - Alps?... ;-) ] - and really use that torque through those four wheels. I specced mine with only the 'Comfort Pack' (heated seats + steering wheel, extended storage, sliding armrest) and Folding Wing Mirrors. The only things [necessary] i wish for are Lumbar Support on the front seats and Adaptive Suspension. Yes, the standard suspension is a bit floaty and initially unsettling but when u think it's going to fall-over it just seems to handle [trust the machine!]. I saw u changed the springs but i've always thought better dampers was FTW for everyday comfort & control. Mine also has LED headlights which came as standard - much improved over the dud halogens of the 2015-gen F31. Also, i've gotten used to the weedy standard speakers [just]... I can understand why you feel it seems a bit 'meh' after your M3, alas average people like me don't usually get the chance to experience such and it's an everyday mass-market car afterall, and like you i like the understatedness of it though still able to 'fight' with it when needed and still not drink like a petrol-engined car. [Maybe, in the future, they'll produce a decent high-torque AWD hybrid we can play with instead...] But unlike you, after driving mine, i DO look back and smile - why? Estoril Blue with Saddle Brown interior :-)

A great video. I used to have an 2010 300d coupé but had to give it up due to cataracts in BOTH eyes. But now, thankfully, they have been removed and I don't even need glasses now. which was a bonus!! But after the 300d, I got myself a 2007 Mini Cooper S (I still can't get away from the Beemer family!) as an interim car. Now I'm looking for a newer car. Looking for something in the 2013/4 era and the 435d and 335d with XDrive easily takes top spot. 330d and 430d running a close second. So your video was of great help. I miss the acceleration of the old 330d coupé and I need to get back into something of a "Q" car where coming up behind and going past slower drivers becomes an easy habit, rather than the "wait for enough room to overtake" in the Cooper S. Plus there are other benefits. Fuel consumption for one. The Cooper S, with me driving averages mid to low 30mpg. With a 435d or 335d, I'll be looking at mid 40's or more. Once again, good video. Thanks :-))

Bang on mate. Have owned a 35d for 2 months now and feels exactly what you said. It is very fast but doesnt feel like it because its very quiet especially now that im used to the torque. Its a good thing when im with the mrs and not so good when i wanna have fun. Im trying to find that exciting drive only to see that im running on 100+mph already without realising it. I find it hard to enjoy as im a a406 and a13 guy and the increasing popularity of speed camera vans recently has put me on constant watch on my odometer. Might have to do a santa pod run this summer to have fun with it. Or maybe find my own mexico im happy i bought it because its economical, comfortable and fast. But i realised that from where i live (london) i dont need a very fast car because its hard to use its potential. Driving a car that FEELS fast is a better idea because of the limitations. It really is a love hate relationship with this car. Overall, would have i chosen a different car? No. Im happy with my 35d. As much as i want an m car, i couldnt as its the only car in the household so i needed a daily car that can be used family trips/fast/economical/comfortable and grippy on wet days. Im trying to avoid them m3 videos dan. Its killing me mate. Makes me wanna buy one. Just coudnt afford it yet. The way you sell the m3. Makes me feels im missing out on something big. Great video mate. Didnt notice it was a 21 minute video. Thumbs up👍🏻

Mate, you need a pocket rocket that can squeeze into anywhere, revs a lot and doesnt go that fast. Actually UK is ok in Speed Cameras. When I went from Oporto, Portugal to Oxford, I found that speed cameras in France are like the black plague, they are everywhere. Then I realized why I haven't seen any special french car other than a Mercedes S400. There is nothing like having fun legally, it's the best of both worlds.
@earvin22087 жыл бұрын
J Costa thats what i realised mate. Like what dan said, his m3 is not as fast as his 35d but it feels fast because of rev and sound. In general in the uk, you are ok with cameras, unless you live in london like i do. Every 3 miles you would see speed camera here in east london. Problem now is them speed camera vans that are increasing. I almost got caught on my first day of driving my 335d on my way back to london from southampton where i bought my car. To be honest, i didnt bother remapping the car as i cant even use the 300bhp that it has unless i bring it to santa pod drag strip. Only advantage is them boy racers whos besides you on the traffic light that wants to cut you off on your own exit rather than queing at the back. The car is just too fast for uk roads. It really is an autobahn cruiser. There are times where a guy in a 320d races me on the motorway. My car is faster but they are braver than me, would go more than 100 just to past me, at that point i just let them have it, not worth it in the end for me. Insurance increase/court hearing/6 points plus ££ penalty and most importantly is safety. Its good to have a fast car tho still, its so much easier to drive, its effortless.

Yep the 35d is a licence killer, quite a few times I have found myself horrified by the display.... it just sneaks up to triple digits! Even in eco pro, actually it’s eco pro I usually have the issues with speeding because it loses the volume of the fake engine noise. The E46 M3 is a licence saver with an exhaust added!

So a great family car until I’m in it on my own and put it in sport mode.... WOW! Not had anyone beat me as yet, great when someone tries to undertake you or hanging on your back bumper... Great video. I do have to point out that your car is a slow spec example so not representative of all 335Ds. If you spend a bit of money they do offer more. Adaptive m sport suspension, most of the new toys etc. If you spec it up good and proper it will look exactly the same as a 340i just different under the bonnet. If you buy a shadow edition touring or even a high spec “normal” version with 19’s and you don’t look back at it, there’s something wrong with you not the car :) I think we all know the car is designed for commuting and high speed cruising, not B road blasting. I’d take a high a high spec remapped 335D touring over the Alpina for two reasons. The alpina wheels are challenging to look at and the 335D offers XD, which is the whole point of the car for me. Even my E91 320D Sport plus touring looks great on it’s lowered suspension and 18s. It’s got a nice nice stance. Could be better obviously but the car gets a lot of looks as it is. I just wish it went like it looks 😂
@TheBenchmarkuk7 жыл бұрын
Mine is a poverty spec, but the externals will remain the same. single exhaust and comedic ride height, just 19" wheels added... which you could do yourself. A fully loaded 335D will just have a bigger screen, nicer clocks, electric seats and adjustable damping (which will help with handling) of course you will then have a 50k car :D Interesting fact, the brakes on the base 335D are the same 4 piston brembos as on the higher spec, just unpainted and slightly smaller discs. I was loaned a High spec Alpina with every bell and whistle and tbh didn't find it any better than a base model. Was nice to have a bigger screen but the system was just as slow to respond to destination inputs and bluetooth audio.
@stubones7 жыл бұрын
It's strange, some of the 335ds I see have that comedic ride height but some are lowered. I assume those are the cars with adaptive M Sport suspension and the 19" 704M wheels or equivalent. I've spent hours (hours I tell you!) speccing up my ideal 335D M Sport Touring. I just did a Shadow Edition configuration, dual tail pipes, 19" 704M wheels, Tanzanite Blue, fully loaded with everything I want in it and that came to an eye watering £58205 OTRCP. If I could justify spending the money I'd be down to Marshall BMW in a flash. I get the whole appeal of the Alpina, but if I'm not mistaken they don't offer a AWD version for the UK so that remove it's it's appeal for me and puts it back on to the 335D. There are quite a few very nice low mileage high spec cars (Touring) on Auto Trader for under £40k so that is an option. To be honest I prefer using my Garmin Sat Nav than the BMW one so I'd always use that.
@TheBenchmarkuk7 жыл бұрын
Ask Alpina nicely and I am certain they offer a AWD version, its called the Allrad if I recall correctly. As for the ride height, they are are hilariously high no matter what option you tick and the exhausts will always be twin pea shooters on one side. Ignore the online builder... it lies!
@stubones7 жыл бұрын
Ah, I was under the impression AWD was a no no for the UK. That changes everything :) There a few 335Ds on AT that don't look hilariously high, but they could do with being 15-20mm lower all round. That's what I was going by, not the configurator. Based on your experience, it's not going to break the bank to get it lowered slightly and those shorter springs will still work fine with the adaptive dampers. You get that done, you get the car mapped to say 375 ponies and 550 torques and you have the perfect car for all needs and all seasons :)
@jorgecosta957 жыл бұрын
You can make a F30 faster, sleeker, prettier, with more stance and all that. But in the end it will still be a Turbodiesel with comfy steering and LOTS of sound deadning. If you drive a proper 6 cylinder petrol BMW, like an E36 325i (I absolutely love the m50b25), E36 M3, E46 M3 etc. you will know what it feels like. Is not about the UMPHH but the whole experience. Those things breath, feel alive, feel like they have an savage spirit that must be tamed! If you add an LSD then it's orgasmic! I have driven a 123D E82 like a maniac. In the end I handed over the keys to my best friend and told him: It's is fast, the steering is nice, the car is nimble... but it has absolutely tno spirit, this is even more boring than my VW POLO (my first car). This was when he bought it, 4 months ago. Today at the café he asked me:" Jorge, what do you think of the 330i (e92) with the N53B30?! "

Great question... I am going to make a very controversial reply here! The Alpina D3 is the best model in the entire line up (330d,335d,m3,340i), its exciting despite being a diesel and almost as fast as a tuned 335d.... so imagine a mapped one! I rate it higher than the M3/M4... its that bloody good. Handles better than the M3 yet is more comfy and has steering that feels 99% as good as hydraulic which none of the BMW models have! If Alpina made a 2 series, it would destroy everything BMW build, which is probably why they don't make one.

Hello mate, great vids. Had to subscribe. Please may I ask your opinion on something? I’m in the market for a new (used) diesel car and willing to sacrifice some speed for how the car actually sounds. I want to hear that delicious straight six burble. Yours sounds lovely in the video, but as we all know the magic of the exhaust note cannot be demonstrated effectively via KZbin; you have to listen to it in person the get the true feeling. How was your mate’s 330D by comparison to yours, sound-wise? Are the newer cars generally tamer (in the noise department) than the 330/335 diesels of previous years? What easy mods make them sound better? I currently drive a 120D and it sounds like a bloody taxi. I want a car that has some poke but that has a sound that puts a smile on my face and currently looking at the 330D. Any help greatly appreciated.
@TheBenchmarkuk7 жыл бұрын
Thank you :-) Sound is something the 330d and 335d both lack. However the 35D does sound a lot beefier both inside and outside in comparison. Mods can be done to 'enhance' the sound (exhaust for instance) but it will still sound like a diesel not not a silky straight six. It does however pull smooth like a straight six. If you can afford it get the Alpina D3 as its the best all around package, if power is important than 35D... if handling and budget is an issue its 330D, all are great. and finally yes modern cars are tamer in the sound department, thank the men in Brussels for that!
@noodldoodl19707 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dan, but after more extensive research I've decided to open the door for thoughts on petrol, as I only do 9k miles a year, all around the doors, so diesel doesn't make that much sense. MPG is obviously better, but versus all them diesely-bits that could go wrong (DPF etc) then it's a false economy, and, like you say, they don't make the sound I'm after. Now to tell the wife I want an M135i...wish me luck, mate.
@TheBenchmarkuk7 жыл бұрын
Wise choice, if I was in your shoes I would probably go petrol again despite how great this car is. The sound of the B58 in a 1 or 3 series is enough on its own!

Yes dealers can tell.... this is universal for all cars nowadays. So only tune if: a) you own the car outright b) willing to cover faults without going through warranty Obviously my leased 335D is standard...

What is going to flat is your power curve (top rpm means fast car between shifts not torque) which is strong above 3800rpm pretty much to 5200 rpm according to your 379HP dyno sheet. So keep the car that rpm range during acceleration resulting the fastest car with that mapping and hardware. So IMHO the "There is truly no benefits to rev the car that high" statement is a bit false.

Yep, I don’t think he realised at that point that the car is a twin turbo. So there is power throughout the whole range almost upto red line.

Question - When you show your before and after graphs of the remap, the HP goes up but the ft lbs actually goes down. Why is this?
@TheBenchmarkuk7 жыл бұрын
Torque spiked as standard for some reason but instantly dropped. The remap holds it steady and feels much faster. They were not the best examples to show as the car made more power mapped on another run when comparing to the Alpina D3 a few months later.

Is it a good upgrade from a Fabia Vrs 1.4tsi?
@TheBenchmarkuk6 жыл бұрын
HI James.... Now that's a hard thing to answer as they are different in every possible way The VRS is like an old school hot hatch with loads of tech thrown in (SC&Turbo + 7 speed DSG) this is like a 5 series with a massive amount of torque/power. So they do not compare in any way in handling, performance feel... just another playing field entirely! The VRS is more fun, the 335D even tweaked is dull in comparison but it will outrun most things on the road. Hope that helps.
@James-pyon6 жыл бұрын
The Benchmark Thanks for your opinion. I need something bigger than my Vrs, I'm considering a 335d or a Golf R estate. I need test drive them both. Have you driven the R?
@TheBenchmarkuk6 жыл бұрын
I owned the S3 for over 2 years which is a Golf R with a nicer interior (imo) it is a VERY good car.... I would say go for any of the variations of that platform (Seat/Skoda/Vw/Audi) and it will be a happy balance of performance, handling and also the amount of tuning/support out there now for it.

@@Thuds593diesels are fun blasting around towns with their low down torque. They will feel faster than petrols for 90% of driving conditions. Petrols have the advantage when really flooring it on an open road and will sound better. But powerful diesels like this are pointless unless you're doing a lot of miles, the engines take a long time to warm up to see improved fuel economy. I'm starting to wonder if my 2013 F31 335D is a dud. Ponderous transmission, bags of lag, stomp the throttle and power arrives 2-3 seconds later, usually after the overtaking opportunity has passed. None of the "instant thrust" that this review talks of. Averaging 28mpg and have never managed to get more than 42mpg even in ECO PRO and driving like a pensioner...

Consider an acs power upgrade which keeps warranty intact OR the steinbauer power upgrade which is the same as the acs but without the warranty for just under half the price. They arent normal cheapo tuning boxes like dtuk/bluespark style, they connect to the injectors instead and change pulse width for a safe power gain with no overboost and no increased rail pressure. With the steinbauer on its max setting you get close to remap figures at around 375bhp and 570lbft torque, and its completely untraceable if removed for warranty work, unlike cheapo boxes which leave records of increased rail pressure on the ecu. The steinbauer is amazing and the gains were dyno proven as well, cant recommend it enough lol, best £1300 ive spent on the car so far

Any petrol will be better top end, that’s where they develop peak power and torque 🤷🏻♂️ Sound I cannot deny…. That B58 is a masterpiece but doesn’t sound as good as the N55. But the 35d being a diesel it’s never gonna sound as good. So you’ve really just stated the obvious, well done 👏🏻
