Its almost a shame BMW pushed the M50 so much with journalists - gave it a bad name for efficiency and range. The 40 seems a great balance of performance, efficiency and range. Shame they still nickel and dime you on options but could be an option for my next car depending on price vs Tesla.

I've just ordered a i4. 29 weeks. Going with the sport version which some decent options (blacked out window, vision and tech pack) I think this is the first bmw where I'm not so keen for m styling. The m makes the front of car look like any other bmw 3 4 petrol series. The simplistic sport front oozes class. (Like a T visor. This is just my opinion of course)

The single motor i4 is plenty quick for most people. On the Dragy, on back to back runs I got, 4.97-4.98 0-60mph w roll out, and 5.23-5.26 sec without. Both substantially quicker than BMW's conservative ratings.

Actually I cannot see the benefit. These small lights in the display behind the steering can barely be seen by the drivers of others cars. Maybe they should be placed outside the car. One pair in the front and one pair in the back should work fine, maybe an additional pait at the sides. Crazy stuff. Can't wait to see these in real life.

The windsock on the bridge actually can tell you how much wind there is (If it is built to specifications). It have red and white rings around it, and depending on how far out to the tip it is inflated, it shows wind speed from 1,5 m/s (5,5km/h) to 7,8 m/s(28km/h) or above when it is fully extended. For each change of color from red to white or white to red, the speed indicated from the big end is 1,5 m/s, 3 m/s, 4,5 m/s, 6 m/s to fully extended 7,8 m/s or above.

This is a great car value for money wise. In Netherlands it starts at 60k, way cheaper than Mercedes EQE and still in some areas better. Range and economy quite a bit better than M50, M50 is not simply AWD version of eDrive 40 - it lacks one of the motors and is lighter. Tesla Model 3 SR+ does not have more kit, just different things. And in many markets its more expensive to lease or finance than a BMW so that negates the MSRP difference

Bmw is charging people 18 euros a month to give you seat heaters. Or something stupid like 419 euros for "unlimited access". In other words. Get ready for monthly subscriptions to turn stuff on you already have installed in the car. You paid for the hardware but you also pay to unlock to use the features. There is a large list of subscriptions you can get right now on BMWs website. That's where they will make their money up.

Between standard audio and Harman Kardon, there is an upgraded audio system which I used to have in my old 1-series. Fairly good but should not be mistaken with the standard audio which used to be poor in BMWs. Are you sure this one didn´t have it? The standard audio in i4 is same as what was typically known as "HiFi" before, it's less speakers without HK branding and Logic7 DSP, but you still get an outboard amplifier. It's not the base-base that used to be available on 1 and 3 series which was just basic speakers running off deck power, those were pretty bad, each front channel for example would be 15 watts nominal but shared between under-seat bass driver, mid in the door, and the tweeter.

A little disagree for efficiency. You have to compare same things. M40, RWD version has same efficiency than model3 LR AWD. But is 10/15% higher than SR+, the RWD version. 10 to 15% more than model 3 is a very good job, but it is not the same.
@hotrod182

The BMW is also much heavier, and much more premium than the SR+, has much wider tires 245/255, and is much quicker. 5.2 sec 0-60 (4.97 w roll out). And I'm sure it weighs as much as the LR and has just as wide tires (heavier weight/more rolling resistance), so it is actually more comparable to the LR AWD than you would think.

@@hotrod182 Who cares about weight ? I just see what i can do with a car. If it is 200kg heavier because of bad engineering it doesnt matter to me. If it needs wider tires it doesnt matter too. Hi Björn, Interesting results, maybe I should try to challenge you with my new "old mans I4" without M-sport. I think you will get even better range results if you swich to ECO-pro mode that is natural to use for constant speed driving. Also, in that mode and using the adaptive regeneration mode instead of the B-setting( one pedal drive) the car vill free-roll as soon as it goes downhill. A bonus is that you don't have to keep your foot on the throttle pedal. Of course in order to improve the comfort and range even more, my car has the 17" aerodynamic rims. I guess you will not find a dealer demo with such "boring" set of wheels, but actually the handling is quite OK, unless you take the car to a racing-track. My car has an average consumption of 15 kWh/100 km, with a lot of short trips up and down a hillside for dog walks and mostly the AC working significantly. The hatchback rear door (for the dog) and my preference for low premium cars that are fun to drive made up a very short list for the moment (I4 and Polestar 2).

I'm too, but when I asked for advice in social media i4 groups, many answered me to keep my Kia E-Niro, if I can't afford big wheels. I can afford them, that's not the point. I just want to know if comfort and hanlingon everyday and long trips are good, that's all. I suspect thes guys are just those who made BMW drivers bad reputation. I seriously don't get why so many infitainment system lag as crazy as they do. At the end of the day it's just tablet hard and software (many are actually even running android). So why is it so hard to make is usable?

I guess they just use the cheapest hardware they can get away with. And I can imagine they use a lot of legacy software that has accumulated over the years instead of making a cut and writing everything from scratch.

@@KDR816 I drove it half a day. It started lagging when I switched from using Android Auto to just using Bluetooth Audio and the internal Nav to see what that's like. After that not only the Nav but the entire system (that worked fine before) became slower. Seems like it doesn't purge memory resources properly - software implemented by the best people the lowest bidder could get..

Please do the M50 again. IMHO It would be very interesting to see the difference with 2 motors/awd with comparable conditions. Also against EQE (non AMG versions)

If you use the configurator online theres also a difference in range if you go for the 19" performance pack. Salesman told me the other 19" does not fit if you go for the performance brakes. Dont know if true, however you can only get the 19" in Bjørns last m50 test, or 20" . Would be cool to see summer test with non performance brakes and 19" or 18 ". The performance pack actually reduces range in the configurator Even if you go for only 19" wheels. Non performance 19" wheels have better range according to the configurator. I have spent too many hours fidling with it 🙈

I still don’t get it. You flip the little arm up and down to turn a light on the dashboard to tell you which way you are turning? I already know where I am going. I don’t have to tell the car to remind me which way I am going. I think it is BMW’s equivalent to the fart noise in the Teslas.

Damn it Bjørn, in my opinion you are one of the very best car reviewers I know… Keep up your style, humor and neutrality 💪🏼🙌 Btw, from a physics perspective weight is always a factor for rolling resistance, but it seems like that with heavier cars the tires can really make a difference for rolling resistance. then Hankooks are probably great here.

You're right about the weight factor, of course, but it's not very relevant with EVs because they are so efficients compare to ICEs. That's the point.

I'm so stoked that you do the sound system tests, almost no other reviewers do these! Very much appreciated. The one thing that would interest me personally would be a range test with brisk, fast paced driving on a windy country road for example (lots of acceleration and braking). I do some highway driving, but am more worried that if I do some spirited driving on a country road I would run out of battery quicker! I guess it's harder to standardise this sort of test though?

@@larsandroid I think you can do a theoretic calculation on that. The range will of course be shorter, just as with a fossile fueled car, but say that the average consumption goes up 30% to 22-23 kWh/100 km you should still get at least 400 km in range. So - pedal in the metal, mate 😉👍

Hi Bjorn, why do you think "B" is better than "Adaptiv"? If you press the brake you only use recuperation. Only if you brake too hard, it will use the real breaks. And Adaptiv also means that you can "SEGELN" (rolling around) and save energy always if possible. Great car, great video! 👍🏻
