haha wow, time flies. I've seen M5's for really cheap now. There's a 50,000 mile M5 selling for $26,0000 here. Granted, it's a 2006 and probably has many problems lol

He’s right to an extent about possible timing chain, but change the chain and on first start-up it’s still gonna sound rough, OP is right the vanos makes it sound this way

@@robbieshaft Its not the VANOS. Nor is it the timing chain. Yes, both of those things do make a rattle when they are worn out, but not when new....and in any case that would not resolve as the engine warms up! My guess is its the combination of the aggressive cam profile combined with the hydraulic cam followers, which need the oil pressure to build up before they expand fully hence the tappety sound on cold start which resolves after a couple of minutes.

Yes that can be a little confusing at first. Here's how it works. "M" drive gives no performance upgrades what-so-ever. It's purely a button where you can program your presets, through IDrive. Clarkson happened to have the power set to is "M" button. The power button however does give you the same amount of power as the one you can program to work with you M-Drive button. The old M cars always had full power, no power button. Back then the M button only stiffened the suspension and throttle.

Totally Winning Pro Gamer my mother has the e39 in mint condition the only thing i didnt tlike on it is the steering wheel but shes replaced it with an m sport steering wheel much better and she has put the m sport interior in it too its a 1998 model and has done less than 40,000 miles

LOVE IT! Yes, the CTS-V has been taking the lead in some magazine tests as far as performance, and I highly commend Cadillac for making such a world class car. BUT, the quality interior, mean looks, and absolutely INTOXICATING sounding exhaust are hard to beat. Still the Ultimate Driving Machine!

Bullshit. I just got an 2008 with 54,248 miles for $32,000 came with an RPI Air Ram Intake, Boysen Exhaust, Custom X-Pipe, and a K40 Radar & Laser Jammer. Its black on black and has a manual. Didn't go with a SMG. For $16,000 the engine must be missing or a bad tranny with over 125,000 miles. Definitely not 625hp. Cheapest I have seen is $21,000 which is an 06 with 125,000 miles with 1 accident. For 16k you got a used honda with a exhaust held up by a coat hanger and some electrical tape.

+robbussum come to the uk you can pick an m5 2004 to 2008 up for anything from 6 to 12k uk pounds with 90k on the clock

It is in what most people use the cars for. SAABs top end is spectacular and it will keep up with a E39 in the 60-90 mph range. But you're right. In a straight line from a standing start the M5 will kill it. It's still a brilliantly effecient car though and the new 2010 9-5 Aero looks, like I said, marvelous. I've never been much for taking sport sedans around the track or doing drags... so... the new SAAB rocks.

Only thing I don't like about this car is the transmission called SMG. I used to have M3 E46 and I had so many troubles with SMG! When I was on the freeway between LA and Vegas, my M3 stopped shifting and I had to call a tow truck! They should make ones with old-styled manual.

The amount of horsepower isn't everything. Remember that the evo is far lighter, and has four wheel drive. The evo would probably win due to awesome cornering, even though the M5 is not bad.

Dono why so many people compare Clarkson and tiff. I have been to a Top Gear live show when tiff and Quentin was still on Top Gear. One of the crowd questons was who was the best driver. Well, the E39 M5, as it has a thunderous engine and goes like stink !! The E60 is getting too big and doesn't seem to be as easy to navigate as the E39s.. However, I do like the look of the E60 and does give a "keeping up with the Jones' " image.

Don't get me wrong, the engine in the E60 is great, and when equipped with a manual I think its a great car, but, I have never been sold on BMW's SMG. (or any paddle shift for that matter). I'm a computer person, but I don't like them interfering with my driving.Why does it matter to you so much? I've got my opinion, you have yours.

I know hp can have different definitions. But the metric hp is equal to the germans ps. I'm pretty sure we use the metric hp when we talk about cars. If I go to BMW's website in Germany it says the M5 has 507ps. If I go to BMW's UK website the M5 has 507hp. In Norway it has 507hk (hk=ps=hp). Maybe we all should start using kilowatts instead?.. he, he...

This to me is the most insane car ever built. Putting a V10 (which is mainly used in super cars) in what looks like an executive family hauler still blows my mind. Sure the F10 is faster but it will never be as unique as the E60 because of the engine. This and the Audi S6 are the only V10 cars that are just as good on the track as they are for commuting, errands, family hauling, and road trips and that what will always make this car special and hopefully worth more down the road. The thing I love most about this car is the reaction you tell a non car guy that this car has a V10.
