Still doing some more research before i pull the trugger and just buy one. I have a 2011 335d US spec thats been blowing a ton of black smoke on acceleration and white smoke on startups. It also has been having bad blow by out of the dipstick. Do you think its the pcv valve/system?
@StupidBlokeStupidVideos Жыл бұрын
The dipstick blow by is likely the PCV. The cold start up could be too, but could also be other things like poor injectors and more commonly bad glow plugs/control module. The back smoke on acceleration is more likely to be a boost leak. Check the bottom intercooler hose and the intercooler itself. They can leak where the plastic tanks are joined to the metal core.

My M57 on my 530D E60 has some white smoke and really smelly fumes from the exhaust that make my eyes water. Could it be time to replace the pcv valve? What are the symptoms of a faulty valve? Great tutorial by the way.
@StupidBlokeStupidVideos Жыл бұрын
It’s possible yea and it’s probably the first thing to change as it’s the cheapest and easiest. Does it do it only when cold or does it do it when warm too? Does it run smooth otherwise?
@Mucky_Muck Жыл бұрын
@@StupidBlokeStupidVideosHi, I'm gonna be rude and get involved in this conversation. My E92 is also smelly and I get blue smoke on startup, sometimes a big puff. It clears after a couple of seconds and doesn't come back until the next cold start. Never smokes while driving or idling otherwise, but fumes are smelly af. It also consumes a little bit of oil. Car runs great tho. Sounds like bad pcv? Is there a way to know for sure or should I just put a new one in and hope that it was faulty? Edit: Forgot to ask - can pcv have impact on the way car starts? Like, it cranks for longer, for example.
@StupidBlokeStupidVideos Жыл бұрын
@@Mucky_Muck the pcv can cause smoke like this but is unlikely to make it take longer to start. Glow plug modules are common to fail which can cause both your symptoms, but usually only make it crank longer when it’s particularly cold. A bad injector/injectors can also cause your symptoms, but usually cause issues when running too if they cause smoke. The long crank can be injectors leaking back excessively, won’t cause rough running once started but can cause the fuel pump to struggle to raise the fuel pressure to within the range to allow the injectors to open, but then when it does the engine usually just fires into life with no smoke or spluttering. Leaking back injectors can also cause a dde/limp dick mode fault under high demand. I think your issue is a mix of pcv and glow plugs tbh. This is the job involved in doing the glow plugs/module: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGrPdWqkg8iZn68si=myC1XDmWbpz9aXcp
@Mucky_Muck Жыл бұрын
@@StupidBlokeStupidVideos Thanks for the reply. Cranking isn't really a concern currently as it has happened only twice so far, once it took something like a second longer to start and second time it was closer to two seconds. I know, it's not much, but never happened before at 0°C. My main concern is still the blue smoke on startups, slight oil consumption and smelly fumes. As I researched I found info that removing oil filler cap should indicate if pcv is bad, there should be blowby and cap should jump around when unscrewed. Any comment on that? My cap does move a little bit when unscrewed, but it's not jumping around, feels pretty normal. That's why I'm kinda puzzled, but I think I'll just replace the pcv as it's not that expensive part anyway.
@StupidBlokeStupidVideos Жыл бұрын
@@Mucky_Muck yea, the cap trick. I forgot to show that int eh video tbh. You unscrew the cap, then hold it down with your finger. Let go after about 10 seconds. If it blows the cap up then it’s blocked up. This is to demonstrate it being blocked though, which doesn’t usually happen on the later non-loo roll filter type pcv. Usually when they burn oil it’s a different fault, maybe a split diaphragm inside.
@RichardABW Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for this. I need to do it on my e39. As well as the puff of smoke was there a bit of an oil-burning smell?
@StupidBlokeStupidVideos Жыл бұрын
I’d expect so but it’s my dad’s car and I never saw it do it in person, only had the videos he filmed to go off really. Since replacing this I’ve also done the glow plugs and control module which is a common fault on M57. Your e39 will have a different type of breather, probably the “loo roll” type which can actually block up, and a common mod is to change them for the vortex type if remember right. The way to test if it’s blocked is to run the engine, unscrew the oil cap and hold it down with your finger for about 10 seconds. When you release your finger, if the cap pops up to release pressure in the crank case then your breather is probably blocked. If so the sort it out as soon as possible as it can cause the engine to to run its own oil and proper fuck it up. This is changing the glow plugs and module: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGrPdWqkg8iZn68si=lhoDREyU9Op0hcqY This is my mates van after it had a diesel runaway kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGm1mJloi5aeeacsi=lxq98BtAKBNRAIkS

@@StupidBlokeStupidVideos Thank you so much for the reply. My oil was replaced by a highly regarded garage about 500 miles ago (but it’s due a change again as it was a while back). However the oil level is currently at more or less the max marker on the dipstick. Is this a reasonable sign that it hasn’t ‘run its own oil’ (do you mean run on its own oil)? Or when it does this is it only a small amount so this wouldn’t be noticeable? My car certainly has a bad smell, no visible oil anywhere.
