In this video I show you how to remove and replace new spark plugs and ignition coils in an N62 V8 X5. Should apply to pretty much all N62 V8 engines. The 5 series version may be a bit tighter and more difficult.

My X5 had NGK replacement plugs installed within the last few years, they didn't look too bad at all. However, changing them out anyway made the car run much better and idle a lot smoother. Definitely a must do maintenance item!

Thank you! I have a 2006 E53 4.4i and was considering doing this but was concerned about the lines running past where the coil packs reside. You just helped me realize that this is more than doable! Will be watching to see what other tricks I can pickup for my X5!

EveryDayPetrolHead thanks man! I avoided tackling this video for a while as well! It was much easier than I thought it would be. Definitely doable, just have a universal 3/8” joint and several lengths of extensions- it will allow for inserting the spark plug socket in the tight spots more easily.

I believe those coil clips are usually etorx not torx. At least that’s been my experience.

Hey man, informative DIY. I just attempted this on my 4.8 and for the life of me couldn't even unclip the first coil pack....In the video you simply just lifted up and it unclipped. Mine won't budge and I doubt the 4.8 coils are that much different than 4.4. Ideas? Or am I literally a dumbass

Hey bro you look like you know a lot about bmw's. I dont understand why my transmission is jerking. It jerks but still works that whats annoying. I just recently replaced the transmission pan and fluids but there is no difference in shifting gears. But what I did notice is that my transmission fluid was black and smelled like shit. Do you think something major is wrong like my transmission needs to be replaced or my transmission cooling system needs to be replaced or just needs to be updated.

Thanks Nour, that doesn't sound good! There are so many quirky elements to these cars that could cause a shifting issue that it's hard to diagnose over the internet. I would say to have a specialist take a look at it to get a better idea of what might be going on. Failing fuel pump can also cause jerking and cutting out.

you don't torque the plugs by spec or anything. also you dont apply any anti seize on the plugs?

David King if you’re not having any misfire issues or dead coils you should get another 30-50k out of them. Save your $!

You can change the set of plugs as part of a tune up. Very inexpensive. Coil packs are expensive… no need to replace unless you have specific misfire codes on a specific cylinder

@@jasbirmandi8512 still, you can change plug first. Switch that coil to another cylinder and see if the misfire code changes to that cylinder. If it does, that coil pack is bad. You can change just the one coil pack.
