It's definitely one of those bikes that harkens back to the time when BMWs were seen exclusively as bikes for old fuddy-duddies. The R 1200 RT has also been the local choice for police bikes (which is actually when I've seen them being hustled the hardest). Although personally when I think of bikes for blokes that have given up on life and started sitting down to piss, it's "cruisers" which come to mind.

Kinda missed the point of the bike on the review though mentioned at the end. This is for long distance touring and comfort, especially 2 up. Thats nothing to do with giving up, its about the most effective tool to do 250+ miles a day on.

If you add the top case, it becomes a 600 lb. cross country tourer. no other bike can match it. Its a lightweight gold wing, only better.

You assert the RT is not a sports tourer - mmh. I assert the 1200 RT let alone the 1250 will keep any other sports tourer on the market honest with the possible exception of the KTM 1290 super duke gt.

I test rode one last year and I didn’t want to get off it - so it does something amazingly!! I have a daily commute into London and I can’t decide whether this will be suitable. I currently use a GSA which is great but at my age it’s starting to feel a little bit much to handle. It’s a shame the review never covered the obvious. What’s it like in city traffic with those panniers? I could remove them but don’t like the idea of paying all that money and have them sit in the loft and paying £800 for a top box.

Good review. I use my ‘16 1200RT as a ‘2 wheeled car.’ Just run it with a top-box in London and it will squeeze through most gaps, especially as everyone else thinks you’re the law 😀 Rider demographic is about right, it sits alongside my Ducati very nicely, so this old g*t can still get his kicks now and again. I most certainly haven’t ‘given up’ just yet 😛 Get yourself across the channel, pick a destination about 1000 Km’s away and point the bike in the right direction, IMHO no bike does that job better, whatever the weather. It’s decent in the mountains, plenty of torque to play with in the hairpins. Have fun 👍

I just brought one love it had a tracer 900 GT loved it greate for touring but now went one better and so i now have a BMW R1250RT LE . Looking forward to the next trip in 2025 to spain Finger crossed

Great bike, no doubt, but why always only the top spec model given over by BMW for review? Takes it out of reach for many (me!) folk.

I don't know on your part of the Globe but here(USA) is rare, if not impossible, to find a base model with 0 bells & whistles sitting at the dealers. A fucked up BMW practice.

I just got a lump sum from my pension! And bought a 2019 BMW R 1250 RT LE. But I got divorced last year, so she didn’t tell me what bike I could buy!

Informative video, thanks.... But a grumble.... So, I know as bikers we are vulnerable road users and whilst I am a biker I'm also a cycling enthusiast that uses ASL's. These bike boxes are for cyclists only, you should not really be entering them at red lights on a motorcycle. Technically, if you pass the first stop line on a red light on a motorcycle you are going through a red light, but regardless of that I don't wanna be surrounded by motorcycles trying to pull away from a light to get to and beyond the speed limit in 1.5 seconds. Please don't do it. 👍

I really like the bike but your comments about pension, lump sums and wife let me have it pissed me right off ! Just road test the bike talk about if you must but your opinions as to why somebody would buy one, well nobody’s needs them.
