I'm going to connect a USB charger to my GSA, I found one that replaces the standard BMW plug in the front plastics. Anything for an easy life🤔. Good to see them being looked after👍

Noticed when you fitted the battery you took off the protectors for the terminals (the black plastic bits you threw away !) with them off, the positive (red) terminal under the tank can potentially make contact with the tank and short the whole lot out, sparks and petrol never mix well, so I'd put them protectors back on and make sure the battery terminals are fully protected from making contact with anything.

Hi Davey, I did look at leaving them on but they wouldn’t close down over the terminals. The terminals also protrude quite a bit outside the covers so even if I did modify them to sit flat, the terminals are still in a position to potentially strike the tank if the strap snapped. Luckily the tank is still painted so is insulated, and the rubber strap holding the battery is not perished and is still strong …. But worse case scenario, the spark would be on the outside the tank so the fuel doesn’t have a direct ignition source, and it’s quite hard to ignite fuel inside a closed tank because the fuel vapour overpowers the amount of oxygen needed to create the fire so all is safe 👍🏻

Perhaps fashion something out of an old inner tube cut to size just to make sure nothing metal can make contact with those terminals, the thought of a spark in the vicinity of fuel vapours is scary, and we need you in one bit to keep producing content ! Ride Safe 👍@@MALVSMACHINE

Really good to see this as need to get one of these too, will have to have a go at it myself 😅😣 d'ya know what would be amazing? A step by step video strip down and checklist of all the things a mechanically enthusiastic but inexperienced hypothetical person potentially undertaking a hypothetical long distance trip outside europe on their 1150GS should inspect and fix/change before embarking on said hypothetical endeavour.... within the next 5 weeks.... hypothetically 👀❤️

I think if you want the USB on only when the bike is running you'll need to connect the +ve of the USB to the Grey wire, and then the - ve to an Earth point, like under that nearby nut with a soldered & insulated ring crimp. As you said you'll get a much more robust and tidy connection using a temp controlled soldering iron and heat shrink.

You would better of with a 5 pin automotive relay, using the rear running light or headlight as the trigger live feed, but taking power directly from the battery. That will prevent the issues you are having.

So.... you ride the bike until your phone dies then you park the bike to charge your phone.... then use your phone to order a taxi home because your bike is dead. Seems pretty simple to me. 😂
