At almost 71, I also have "old man syndrome" and also still appreciate the distractions when out riding. I've made my RS's mileage lessen by adding 2 BMW's and 2 RE's. All different rides, styles, and $$. They should all outlast me and will be going to new homes when I'm either too old to ride or not around. Planning ahead is a great idea. Planning on enjoying riding for as long as possible. An old guy that still thinks young. Just don't look in mirrors. LOL.

I used to have a triple black GS like that from 2016 to 2020. Sold it then to go electric with Energica. Back on a similar R1200 R now. I wouldn't sell the GS, you'll regret it. Get something cheap/old/different besides this instead. And replace the spoke wheels with lighter cast wheels and remove those useless crash bars if you keep it anyway😊

Great choice Dave. In my experience and many past bikes very varied. I don’t think I would go past a gs even with some of the costs involved. I’d love to upgrade to a newer model but for now my older gs1200 I’m more than happy with. In my travels I spoke to a guy recently with almost 110k miles just back from a euro trip to me that says it all. Stay safe out there.

Brave man, with that choice. Since I returned to biking in 2018, I have had seven bikes (only ever two-at-a-time) as I tried to find a happy combination. Very sensible to stick with what you have when it does the job. Think about the money you are saving - for a future bike! Currently have a Kawasaki Z900RS for whipping about and looking cool (ish) and an R1250GS Exclusive for longer rides - like the week in Ireland I had last month. Keep up the good work.

It could be a permanent keeper and an interesting long term project for the channel 👍. Also it was interesting to hear your local dealer is in Kells, which is where my Grandad's family, on my Mom's side) are from! I haven't been there since I was a child of eight so it must have changed so much in fifty years.

I’ve gone through multiple cars but still have my ‘05 1200GS. It’s awesome, relatively simple and barely cracks 500lbs. The Boxer is so balanced at very low speeds and the torque will tug you up any technical hill at 2500rpm lol. Any my old GS buddy bought a Vstrom 650 a while back. It’s been cheap and economical but the quality is really lacking of course. Enjoy the ride!

Can't fault you Dave. I tend to opt for one do-it-all stalwart bike and keep it longer, and your others can be your fun, novelty bikes, and probably swap them more often. I also put the small bar risers on mine because of some slight tension in the shoulders on a long run, and now I never seems to be an issue so i guess that slight tweek must have worked.

Alright, Dave, right decision, me and you have had very similar love for bikes. I originally subbed to you back in the FJR days. i had a Vfr 800 and was looking at the FJRs, i went with a 2013 Gs after, that blue me away, this year after an issue with the shocks i traded in the 2013 for a 2021 1250 gs, i have to say its an unbelievable bike but the shock factor i got from the 2013 model i just haven't had. Its a lot of money spent for a very similar bike to the 2013 models, all be it with a few more bells and whistles. Hope this helps someone else thinking of changing 👍

I laughed so much at your musings. Apart from the accent, You sound just like the many discussions I have had with myself. I too own a 2016 Triple Black and absolutely love this bike. I had thought of upgrading to the new GS, buy in my opinion BMW have totally lost the plot with the meaning of the new model GS ( now the R1300R is about to launch , you can't tell the difference in the two bikes). I also have spent a fair chunk of money morphing my GS into exactly what I wanted , and any money I spend on it now is still a better option for me than changing to another bike and starting to shape it into exactly what I have now. I am pretty sure this will be the last bike I own.......... until I am looking for a mobility scooter !

It is easy to convince ourselves that the grass is greener when thinking of new bikes. However when you give it a lot of thought and ask yourself some probing questions about what the real benefits will be and most importantly answer honestly to yourself you will come to the conclusion most of the time that any benefit is Likely to be tiny but the cost of change very high.

Definitely the right choice. Must admit from having my heart set on a 1300GSA I'm getting the feeling for keeping my 1250GSA mainly because I'm starting to think the 1300 is too dependent on technology more so than before and we all know the potential for 'features' that are possibly still undiscovered as per previous models (thanks to the Bean Counters) plus the mind numbing jumps in the price across all the BMW range. I'm fortunate that money is not the problem as I've already got that covered but I'm just reluctant to part with it for something that does appear that it will appeal to my riding style or be a significant step change. Saying all this I still prefer to ride my 2013 last of the oil cooled 1200GSAs. Once a Luddite always a Luddite. 😉

Good decision ! I have a 2011 GS, the last of the air/oil cooled engines, 51K, which I have done all those miles, 1000 miles last week to Skye, 4000miles last winter to Spain, and the same the winter before, no problems. Had ESA problems at 35K, fixed for £600. Just keep fixing it, still cheaper than replacing the bike. And mine weighs less than a RE Super Meteor. The new one is too expensive and you cannot use all that power in the UK anymore. I will only replace mine due to emissions, it likes 98 Octane, (will run on less, but doesn’t like it so much). And 98 is getting fewer everywhere, even in France. If only BMW would bring out a GS with the engine in the R12 nine T, I would snap that up.

I bought a 2018 1200 GSA last year, the one that already comes with the TFT screen and I love it. The TFT screen makes a BIG difference for me on how much more I like the bike. It is a big quality of life improvement. Funny thing is since I bought mine the price on the used market is going up. The only advice I have for you is to check if you want to replace yours with one that comes with the TFT as well and perhaps less milleage. The cost might not be worth it though. In Portugal the 1200GS Adventure with TFT is around €18k~21k and the non TFT can be €15k. Big difference but it will allways dependend on the local market. Maybe you can do a testride on one with the TFT screen, see how you feel about it and evaluate if it is worth it. Greetings from PT

Hello Dave. I support your decision. I think it’s great. I can’t understand the constant need to change bikes especially when you have a great bike. When I say I don’t understand it I mean lots of it comes from just a marketing push by the bike companies. There are few badly made bikes these days. There may be a bike that’s not right for you but the bike itself is good. So once you find and buy a bike that’s right for you only thing left to do is ride. I recently sold and bought a new bike. The bike I sold I love and still love but it was not right for me so I replaced it with a bike more fitting for my style of riding

Can relate to the struggle Currently pondering the same with my 2012 gs Rallye I’ve decided If you don’t regret buying it you’re going to regret selling it! 🤷‍♂️

Hi, I'm in the same dilemma at the moment. My 2018 gsa is currently in Preston BMW having the front suspension changed, not 18 months since the rear let me down!! I really fancy down sizing or maybe that's down 'expensing' to the new 450 Himalayan. It's a lot of bike to give up and I'm hoping I'll fall back in love with her when I finally get her back. Going into limp mode on a Scottish island for a suspension fault is something I don't want to experience again. Thankfully my very good friend rode home then drove back in his van to recover me. I would recommend a fuel map 'remap' I had mine done about 15000 miles ago and it transformed the smoothness of the engine and gets rid of the flat spot at 5000 rpm. Maybe if I keep her and the suspension goes again in the future, there might be the option to convert the suspension to a non dynamic set up. It's funny you mention cheating on her' I feel the same! Good content, new sub👍

Wow, we have experienced very similar experiences there. I’m still enjoying the new found love affair but will be putting her through another test when I travel to the ABR festival on her. Thanks for subbing. 🙏

Hi Dave. I have a 2019 GS and, while it’s been a great bike, I have always considered myself to be ‘between Africa Twin’s’. Until last weekend! I was cleaning the bike and I had an epiphany. I realised that I actually love it. It easily does everything I need, looks great and is reliable, comfortable and cheap to run. I’ve decided that she’s a keeper and I’m no longer between Africa Twins.

@@allanhughes7859 it’s one of the early 1250’s. It had the fuel pump replaced at the first service, under warranty. I didn’t know there was a problem but it showed up on the diagnostic. And it’s had 3 sets of tyres and that’s it. Just coming up on 24k miles, a fair few of which were off road.

Great decision Dave ,although your Mrs will just spend it all now if your not! ☹️🤣👍 When you'd said it was going to be 20k Euros + your R1200 to swap,I personally thought I'd just keep the GS & buy another smaller GS & you'd still be happy & betrer off I bet! 😬👍 Hopefully catch up with you if your over for the ABR! 😎✌️

Sounds like a 1250 GSA is in order 😄😁. But I think your right about not getting the 1300. many are having issues with the new bike. Teething pains. But there are many that dont have any issues with the new 1300. I guess time will tell.

If you're confident in the bike and can keep on top of maintaining it, good decision. I too have spent huge money chopping and changing but there are some cracking older bikes if you can live without all the clever modern tech. Ps the Africa Twin is a fine machine but in my opinion isnt in the same class as the GS but if it was shaft drive that could bump it up quite a few notches...

How about a Moto Guzzi, for a bit of character. cheaper than some of the options you listed.

At which point does a bike start become RETRO.... I currently own a Moto Guzzi V85TT. I've put 12000 miles on it in 20mths. I'm about to do 3000 miles around Europe (from NI) I intend keeping the Gootsi for a lifetime. I think although there is a period a bike feels dated I think they then start becoming retro looking. Think if you saw an 1150 air cooled GS you'd think that looks cool 😎.. The 1200 will eventually be like an 1150.

Hey Dave, I don't own the GS but I had a similar scenario with my 13 year old VFR1200 and like you decided to keep her, yes I also would like all the mod cons but she does it all for me and just can't bring myself to get rid of her, any recommendations on where your getting the GS detailed and coated.

I reckon you could just down size to two bikes and still be very happy with just your Street Triple RS and your Honda VFR800. You don't need other bikes. These two would still give you many miles of happy motorcycling. Also they would be much cheaper to run than your GS which sounds like it is now costing you a fortune. You must have money to burn!

This is a great decision. I have wasted thousands over the years changing. Keep away from BMW dealers and you can maintain it economically. Some say the GS peaked at the 1200.

I prefer the 1150. More character I think. Also the 1200 handlebars cause my thumbs to ache - weird I know. Must be the angle of the bars.

I’m surprised that according to yourself and others on YT that BMW’s are problematic after relatively low mileages, especially as they are supposedly designed for long distance touring! Maybe a lot of people buy them for ‘image’ (same with BMW car drivers!). I’d stick with a Honda or other Japanese bike if you want quality and reliability.

I would never ever buy a gas-guzzling monster like the BMW R1200GS. If I had one I would probably sell it and get a 650 something. If you can afford the petrol, keep it. It's a nice motorcycle. Edit: With all the problems you've had, I would probably sell it. I've had problems with some motorcycles but not as many as you. Get a Japanese motorcycle unless you are loaded.
