Great how to as usual George. I did cringe when you used your impact gun on the threaded bar nut of your bearing puller. I have seen many of those threaded bars gall up very easily over the 24 years as a mechanic.

George put another nut on the diff side of your bearing pull and lock the two nuts together. This will stop either spinning and negate the need for a 3rd hand holding a spanner

You should really remove the driveshaft first to avoid potentially damage the ABS sensor - just six torx on the diff end (E12 on small diff cars like 118i's etc) plus driving it out of the hub.That can be a real b@stard if it's rusted in. bobfrankish8883 mentions it and the need for a very serious puller/press so you need to undo the big nut and make sure the shaft is going to move in the hub before even starting the job. I had this on an E90 where absolutely nothing would shift it - not even a 100 ton press - so I replaced the complete rear hub and shaft assembly. That bearing removal tool is superb!

Regarding the race on the hub, a bloke I work with said he used to just run a quick weld around bearing race to remove it the off the hub. he said they would pretty much just drop off when they are hot after being welded. I usually just put a slit it them with a 1mm cutting disc, and a quick smack with a chisel will split it and drop it off.

Hi George. I've done several of these bearings now on various BMW models. The main snag you, or anyone else doing the job, will come across is the driveshaft seized into the hub. I bought a cheapish hub puller, the type that bolts onto the hub using the wheel bolts, from Ebay, I had to get busy with the grinder and die grinder to make it fit an E46, but it was an absolute game changer. You tighten up the puller as tight as you can, then give the hub a few good hammer blows just to send the shockwaves through the assembly and the job is done. In my experience, there is no way to get these apart by bashing the end of the shaft. I have found that the claw-type pullers are just not man enough.

The tool your dad he made was perfect. My advice is if that slide hammer does not work is to go and buy the drive shaft bearing and hub from a junk yard. If they are stuck they can be so stuck that almost any press will not budge it and you can waste days.

My 2006 E93 have a Alpina undercarridge. To remove the wheel bearings, have done all four, I had to remove the bearing hubs from the car. It took 55 tons of hydraulic pressure to remove the bearings from the hubs. On 2006 there are three torque specs. From the top of my head, torque should be in region of 460 Nm on my car. The reason for my bearings collapsing, was that BMW shop had replaced bearings for preveous owner and used less tightening torque.

A good tip is to put a dop of grease over the nut to stop the water rusting it up

Good job! A very decent DIY as well. How sweet it is to have the right tools for the job! If your dad would be interested, you might propose selling that custom bearing puller/press kit he made for you. I bought a cheapo Chinese kit off of Amazon and had a helluva time getting it setup right to remove my E82's wheel bearings. Low quality metallurgy relegated it to one time use as well.

@@GeorgeAustersIt's good when the description is as exact as possible. Sometimes or many times it's even important to know the month/year of production to understand/realise that "this" in the video is slightly different. Of course VIN code is the best thing to show at the beginning of the description. Then you can start thinking of a homepage with links to the video that solve the actual problem. If you mention (in the description) the original partnumber, in this case of the bearing, everyone can check which cars are using this bearing, and then, maybe, understand that the construction of the assembly is the same or similar. Then you can sell some advertising space on your homepage, too. I think every penny is needed.

You made this a real hard job!... just use a 3 legged hub puller....it pushes against driveshaft and pops the hub straight off....then use your tool which is correct way to pull bearing without taking whole lot off and putting in a bearing press...
@GeorgeAusters
@GeorgeAusters Ай бұрын
How is a hub puller any easier than a slide hammer? Haha I’ve used those puller tools before and they often slip off whereas a slide hammer is physically bolted
@paulmoor595
@paulmoor595 Ай бұрын
@@GeorgeAusters a decent quality puller will grip the hub and press against the driveshaft end....I used it on E90 with 230k on and it worked well...put decent tension on...then tap with hammer and flange popped off. It's a rubbish job either way so hats off to you...having looked...its a 4 leg puller....
