It was time see what the BMW S 1000 XR can do on a pretty demanding climb up one of the most epic passes in the Italian Alps - the Passo di Gavia (Gavia Pass). I just left Switzerland and the Umbrail Pass behind and was happy not keep looking at the spedometer every 5 seconds. The 430 km test ride would take me through the Austrian, Swiss and Italian Alps. If you are intrested in what I thought about the BMW S 1000 XR as compared to my KTM 1290 Super Adventure S check the review section on my channel where I summarized my impressions into a video.

Wooaah!

Nice! This was the easy way up, we ride it last year from the other side, in the summer, 3 degrees Celsius, snow and rain, on the XR with panniers an wife 2up. A true challenge. De descent, as in this vid, was the easy pert. Fantastic panoramic views.

One of my favorites. We took it in the same direction. The cloud also fell on top. The way down other side was beautiful especially closer to the top were the clouds still hovered between the mountains.

The Gavia, one of my favorite passes in this area. Awesome how many passes you did on one day. What about theme other side of the Gavia, did you also ride there? A little slower there to ride, but epic Landscape views.

Did I ask you how you record audio on your video? I am American. Going to ride the alps in June w a friend who lives in France. Bought a GoPro. It does not seem to be able to connect to my Sena Bluetooth helmet mic. I have never used a GoPro before. I like the fact that your audio has both the road and wind noise AND clear narration which seems to be in real-time to the wind noise but the wind noise does not over power the narration. My Sena seems to filter out all wind noise even though I can hear loads of wind noise in my helmet but the Sena does not even communicate with the GoPro! Seems like GoPro would have figured that out. I mounted my GoPro on top of my helmet thinking it would give the best view but I realize now it will just get more wind noise. Someone suggested I just record on to my iPhone recording app but I do not have a lot of space on it and it did not seem reliable when I tried it. Sorry for the clumsy way I am saying all this.

I would suggest using a an external mic with your GoPro (you will likely need the mic adapter for it). I did a video on my video / audio setup last year kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqrIc4d5fNmSgdU The setup is pretty much the same for 2021. I was experimenting with external recorders and a ton of different microphones to improve audio quality. Must have spend 800+Euro just on audio equipment. Most of which I will not end up using now. The one thing I did do is use better quality mics with my actioncam. I had a lot clipping due to wind noise at higher speeds. Low & moderate speeds will keep the wind noise down and sound is OK even with low cost mics. I wanted to have something that works at higher speeds (above 50 mph) I am still experimenting but my interim finding is that the max SPL (sound pressure level) that a mic can handle does have a large influence on sound quality. Makes sense too - most lavalier mics will have max SPL of 110db or less. It can easily get that loud under your helmet at higher speeds. The mic cannot handle the sound pressure and the sound quality starts to deteriorate. So I found the Sennheiser HSP Essential Omni-Black EW - approx. 250,- Euro lavalier mic with a max SLP of 148db that seems to work much better even if directly connected to my Sony actioncam. I said in the video that the camera brings in the signal too hot but maybe I was just using the wrong mic all along. Anyway, I do not suggest to get this expensive Sennheiser - get something in the 20-60 Dollar range (Rode Lavalier Go or similar) and see if this works. I also own the Rode Lavalier Go - that is my 2nd mic that records the engine sound at the moment. It is padded in some foam and therefore can handle louder sound sources like the exhaust. OK - looong answer. In short: get the GoPro Mic adapter ($50-60) and a good Lav mic (like the Rode Lavalier Go) and place the lav mic in your check pads and go out for a test ride ;-)

4 in-line, a very reliable engine but you have to ref the hell out of it to get the torque going, I suppose once a v guy always a v guy, great video thanks.

What happens when an idiot coming the other way goes into your lane around a blind turn? Or when you hit some gravel? Or a deer pops out?
@MotoVibes
@MotoVibes 3 жыл бұрын
Is there any particular point in the video that you found to be a close call? Deer are not really an issue in the mountains but of course other wildlife may cross the roads - I have seen a few marmots unexpetily shooting out from the side of the road. As for the gravel check 5:12 min - there is time to see and react to debris on the road. It is important to observe the road and adjust line and speed - however, there is always a residual risk with riding a motorcycle.
@robertlee8042
@robertlee8042 3 жыл бұрын
@@MotoVibes no pt a close call at all. Just worry about what could happen. I have written so many miles for so many years that anything that could happen has happened. It’s not just conjecture. So I worry. Even though every second I am on a motorcycle I am thrilled and in love with the experience I am also incredibly vigilant looking for all possible dangers. I’ve known a couple of people who died. A few nights ago I rode with a club that had 14 members killed in several years. My wife 50 years ago was a BMW Yamaha dealer and her parts girl was killed. I’ve had several friends who have had bad accidents. I just worry. For everyone. I was a medic 66-70. Ran an ER. I worry. I had four boys. Two had bad accidents. I have not. Partly do you luck naturally but also partly do to my attitude. I always dress for the fall (which most of these reviewers do, also) and I always temper my desire to be exhilarated by my estimation of the dangers and their consequences. I was once almost knocked off my bike by a bug that hit the back of my throat. I was once almost knocked off my bike by tumbleweed in a desert. I’ve had a car come around a sweeping bend on an expressway, hit the medial guardrail and flip over into my lane (which I could not have escaped had I had ABS, actually). I had on the back a blind passenger. When I go around a sweeping left hand turn on an expressway in the middle of the night and I’m going fast and I see another car coming the other way I’m remembering that night. There are places where I get my rocks off. But fewer places than most much younger riders. I worry for them. I do not mean to be critical. I just worry.

@@robertlee8042 Fair enough and thank you for your concern. I am in my mid forties with a family so i so want to make it back in one piece 😉 I do like the thrill of riding a motorcycle and the few moments in my every day life that get my focus away from everything else that occupies me 120% of the time most of the time. It’s nice to feel alive like that even if the risks of getting hurt go up to some degree (probably a lot)
