BMW’s Robotic Dog SpOTTO that Monitors Manufacturing Plant operations
BMW Group Plant Hams Hall Welcomes a Robotic Teammate: SpOTTO
The BMW Group Plant Hams Hall in the UK has introduced a four-legged robotic dog named SpOTTO to its team. Equipped with advanced visual, thermal, and acoustic sensors, SpOTTO autonomously scans the plant, supporting maintenance and ensuring smooth production processes.
SpOTTO: Powering the Plant's Digital Twin
SpOTTO plays a crucial role in developing and refining the plant's fully connected digital twin, a virtual replica that operates on three levels:
3D Representations: The first level generates detailed 3D models of the entire plant.
Large Data Layer: On the second level, SpOTTO, along with production facilities and IT systems, feeds real-time information into a massive data layer.
Application Level: The third level involves dedicated programs that sort the collected data into clear and traceable units.
This combination of levels makes the digital twin unique. Experts at Plant Hams Hall can utilize this data through applications for quality assurance and production planning.
A Reliable Maintenance Watchdog
SpOTTO's sensors enable it to perform numerous maintenance tasks. It monitors the temperature of manufacturing equipment, detecting potential failures early by identifying if an installation is running too hot. Additionally, SpOTTO specializes in detecting leaks in compressed air lines, which helps lower energy consumption by quickly identifying and addressing them.
From Boston Dynamics to BMW: The Journey of SpOTTO
Originally created by Boston Dynamics as "Spot," this nimble robot can climb stairs and navigate uneven terrain with ease, making it suitable for indoor use. At Plant Hams Hall, the robot was renamed SpOTTO, paying homage to the plant's British heritage. The name is inspired by Gustav Otto, one of BMW's founders and son of the four-stroke internal combustion engine inventor, Nicolaus Otto.
In 2023, Plant Hams Hall produced over 400,000 engines and employed around 1,600 people alongside SpOTTO. Before its introduction, a dedicated team spent a year testing SpOTTO's suitability for various tasks. Additional potential applications are currently being explored, including reading analog operating controls and performing complex movements to access hard-to-reach areas.
Collaboration for Innovation
Marco da Silva, Head of Spot Product Development at Boston Dynamics, explains, "The working environment at Plant Hams Hall is well suited for industrial inspections using a quadruped robot like SpOTTO. The robot can easily take over numerous, repeatable monitoring tasks, allowing the plant's maintenance team to focus on more complex issues. We are proud of how SpOTTO has been integrated into the plant."
With its advanced capabilities and seamless integration into the plant's processes, SpOTTO exemplifies the innovative spirit of BMW Group Plant Hams Hall and the potential of autonomous robots in modern industrial settings.
