Weak Shock Absorber Strut Results In Clunking Noise While Driving
We had this BMW X1, having completed an overall driving mileage of 35k kilometers, visit one of our MotoFyx car repair workshop for an annual service along with a concern relating to that of frontal suspension noise while driving. The car had recently been used on a road trip wherein while driving there was a sudden underbody impact at high speed on account of poor road conditions, ever since the impact, the car was observed to be pulling on to one side and the overall driving performance had drastically deteriorated. With multiple noises being heard from car’s front end and concerned about a potential breakdown further driving the car in such a state, the car owner reached out to us for immediate assistance.
Upon a detailed inspection of the car by our expert technicians, the front shock absorber struts had heavy leakage and had become externally weak, possibly due to impact, resulting in drastically lowering the car’s front end. Further, the shock absorber mountings had also become weak and had developed heavy play due to the nature of impact.
There was significant amount of play observed on Stabalizer linkage too
*Function of shock absorbers:
- Shock absorbers and linkages connect a car to its wheels and allow relative motion between the two
- Suspension systems must support both road holding/handling and drive quality, which are at odds with each other
*Symptoms of weak shock absorbers:
- Instability while driving
- Excessive bouncing of tyres
- Uneven tyre wear
- Noise from the suspension on rough roads
*Solution:
- The weak front shock absorber struts were replaced with new one
- Stabalizer linkage were also replaced
