I've owned a few special cars in my life (Ferrari 348tb, BMW M6 V10, Audi R8, Lancia Integrale among others), but i can safely say that my "Urgrun" Z1 is the most fun car i've ever had. And the plus side is that you can have tons of fun at low speeds... you don't need to rev the hell out of it :) Great video Damian, keep up the good work!

Been daily driving BMWs continuously since 1988. 316, 318, 328, E46 M3, E92 M3. All great for what they do & reliable. But the Z1 is a real special. Brilliant video - one of your best.

I remember seeing this car at Earls Court. Then late in 1990 MLG in Chiswick had one in the showroom and I would walk by desperate to have this car. My partner secretly arranged a test drive for me. I was fortunate to have an inheritance early in 1991 and used it to buy a Z1 in green with the lemon cream / dark green interior. Fabulous car. The instruments came from a BMW motorbike. Interior was beautifully done. From a time when BMW were at the top of their game.

Damian, wow, what a blast from the past! I remember in 1986 when this car was in prototype and the Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry (now the California Science Center) had this car displayed on its floor. The interesting thing was that all of the plastic panels were velcroed and attached to the car where the children could remove the panels from the chassis and then reattach them!

This is why I watch the Car Guys. Damien takes us Back to the Future with this little gem of car. The BMW Z1. It doesn't get any cooler than this little beauty. What were BMW thinking when they came up with the idea of disappearing doors? Is it pretty? Not exactly, but it is special. Damien gives a great review on the creation of the car and revels in his experience driving it. I have a german collector friend who not only has a Z1 but also the iconic 507 and a Z8..lucky man. Thanks to Jack for letting Damien take us along for the ride. Red watch (?) to match the paint too.

I owned a 325 i which had the same engine, as you mentioned. When revving, it was humming and letting you hear trumpets. A "cream engine" and "dream engine". Gorgeous and a sheer fun to drive. The gearboxes were always very smooth and easy to shift in my experience. The acceleration was great in its day. Nowadays, spoiled as yourself by Porsche and Ferrari, we get the feeling it is quite slow but that's not true.

I just sold my classic car (a manual V12) to my brother, thinking no more classic cars for me. About 3 days after the sale, I noticed how I 'accidentally' started visiting car selling websites again. And the Z1 kept on popping up when I let my finger "ouija board" the cars to search for ;) So then I started digging and virtually every review is very positive about the nice driving experience. So now I find myself Googling for known issues with the model (guess what, those doors can break down) and I fear I might very soon be visiting car sellers who have a Z1 in stock... PS: 2 small corrections: the engine is from the 325iX, which used an adapted version of the 2.5, with an altered torque curve. And the 507 had a V8, not an inline six.

I do remember back in the 90s looking out of a nightclub window and watching 2 guys pull up and get out of one of these only to be surrounded by girls, 😂, honestly, it drew more attention than any other car I’ve seen including Lambo’s, Porsche’s and Ferrari’s. They are a very special thing and highly revered by BMW Enthusiasts. BMW Designers should revive this car in a modern form, it will need to have the doors tho or its nothing.

I owned a Z1 back in 1991. Unfortunately I sold it with just 8000 km. I often regreted it. Somethig like the Z1 will never be created by BMW again, since it was never intended to be mass produced. So I bought an i8 roadster las year, also an outstanding car with many innovations (CFK, doors, hybrid, Laser headlights). And I won't make the same mistake again!

I cannot believe you said the Z4 has no allure. It’s literally the most underrated second hand sports car on the market today. A late model e85 or 86 with the N52 engine is a peach as long as you get rid of the run flats. Try a good one and I think you’ll be surprised.

I don’t know what you would say it was not a commercial success. They sold a lot more than they intended to produce initially. Slots were a reward to dealers which is why Germany got so many. Initially they traded above list price in the secondary market. They produced as much as they could using the equipment to the point that when the zamac mould were about to be shot, they had to stop production. The car had never been intended to be produced for profit but rather as a live test for the future and an image exercise.

So that 319 grille seems similar to today’s designs, no? I remember going on a visit from primary school to the Ardingly Agriculture Show in the late ‘70s and seeing my first Lamborghini (a tractor), but BMW had a stand and were showing the M1 sports car. It’s a testament to BMW that everything works as it should (no doubt regular fettling helps). But the thought of potentially doing 140mph with the doors down 😳

First car review featuring the Studio Underd0g melon, an excellent choice. When the car was launched I was instantly put off by the electric doors, I thought now there is a motor failure waiting to happen. Should have realised that it features German engineering which apparently is better than say the French electric sliding doors a la Peugeot 1007! 😱 so I should not of worried! Of course I was far too poor to afford one plus of course I thought the MX5 looked better, although perhaps not as quick (dam sight cheaper though). Suffice to say I love it too, different is good and nice to hear it drives great too. 😄
