Best thing to do is to change the oil between 5-7k miles, stop doing 10k oil changes. BMW says it's ok, it's not ok. Have the oil examined and I guarantee that it will find metal debris.

Two options 1. Rebuild your engine, because you want everything to be perfect 2. Accept that your N52 burns oil. Always keep a litre of 5W-40 in the boot. Every week when you do your checks, you know on a Sunday night when the kids are in bed and you go and check the tyre pressures, coolant, oil level etc just top it up. Some people get hung up on the tiniest thing. ‘They all do that’, is not good enough, it must be fixed! Instead of rebuilding the engine, spend the money on a tank of super unleaded and go enjoy your car down some proper drivers roads! Cheers Doc for the perspective!

Hello Dr. Dean, About four months ago I purchased my 2006 BMW 325I with the N 52 engine and I must admit I was getting ready to just sell this car but thanks to you and the hard work that you put into these videos I’ve learned to enjoy and love my BMW. Initially after driving for about 20 minutes the engine will start whistling like a whining pig and Ive never done any (Mechanic) work in my life but I decided to buy the CCV valve and I followed your step-by-step video and I just sincerely want to say thank you Because that took care of that issue and it took me about five hours to take the manifold but I did it and I felt so proud. The problem that I’m having right now is that before coming to a stop I feel a jerk And it feels a little bit stronger when the car is warmer but it does not do it on sports mode only on Drive. I have replaced my transmission oil and like I said it drives like a dream but right before coming to a stop I feel like jerk as if someone just tapped me from the back. I don’t know if it’s my transmission solenoid’s or the flex disk and quite frankly I have no idea... can you please guide me in the right direction? I really appreciate it and once again thank you for taking the time because I’m really enjoying my car and I don’t see myself getting rid of it anytime soon.

@@erickhernandez4670 most 20i 25i and 30i models from 04-12 use a zf6hp19 or 21 trans. A common issue is the sleeves in between the mechatronics unit and the transmission. It loses fluid pressure because of these broken seals, which makes the shifts slow and jerky, in a worst case scenario throws an issue up on the i drive ”transmission failure, drive moderately”. If you cant switch to a certain gear (ie 3rd or for example reverse) then the issue is with the mechatronics solenoids. A kit of these sleeves plus a genuine zf oil change kit will take around 300 bucks and 5 hours of work on a regular driveway.

what does BMW Doctor think of liqui moly 5w-40?
@csutakgergo52794 жыл бұрын
Okay so explain this to me guys, i have a 2005 325i n52b25A engine, with about 160k km on the clock. When i bought it it used about 1l/700km of oil, changed the pcv changed valve stem seals fixed external leaks, engine still used 1l/700km. So finally i did 10-40 which made it a lot worse(1l/400km) so i thought okay my problem is getting worse. So i added forte oil thickener which made everything even worse, (1l/300km). Engine was clean inside no carbon buildup. So complete engine teardown revealed worn oil scraper rings(the middle ring is tapered in these engines and early n52s got rings made of softer material, you can see that in realoem, there is an updated part no) when that tapered ring loses its edge its gonna start pumping oil into the cylinders instead of scraping them off, having a thicker oil means the cylinder walls get a thicker coat and the rings just glide over them sending oil into the chamber. Anyways after honing the alusil block and replacing rings, car performs now better than ever. Hard wear in was crucial. No oilconsumption whatsoever, using 5 w 30. With 5w40 it uses about 0.5l in 3500kms. So there you go use thick oils as much as you want. Because of the sophisticated vanos and valvetronic system this engine will throw codes if you go thicker with the oil

@JMUDoc3 жыл бұрын
I am considering oils for my next change and I am very drawn to the Magnatec 5W-40 and Lucas 0W-40 - their cold viscosities are _extremely_ low, but their 40 and 100 degree viscosities are quite high. An engine isn't going to burn cold/thick oil, so try to get the lowest cold viscosity oil as possible, while shooting for higher 40/100 values.
@_J.P._ Жыл бұрын
Too low isn't great either because a too low viscosity may result in the oil being pushed out from all possible seals and spots and won't stay "in place". Engines are okay with some overnight down time as the individual parts will stay lubricated for a long time with a thin film. Even a week is not an issue. The problem starts with cars that are not driven for a longer period of time like half a year or even more where all the upper parts are pretty much dry (not completely but almost). In such a case it is advisable to pull the fuel pump fuse and just crank the car a few times to pump up the oil. Then put the fuse back in and start it up. Be ready to hear some lifters really hard but other than that it is okay. No hate just a tip :)

Yes, in general one should aim att low as possible on the W number as it refers to winter characteristics of the oil film and it's viscosity and as HIGH as possible on the other number as this will indicate the temperature that the oil will be able to keep a good oil film. Lower then that, the oil will vaporize, burn off in the ventilation of the crankshaft and can't keep a good oil film.

Thanks to your videos BMW Doctor I am learning a lot from them as I am now starting to DIY my 2008 BMW x5 3.0si. Part of that was looking for the exact same oil specs and certifications as BMW's 5W30 oil. I live here in Vancouver, Canada and I am unable to see any oil with the same oil with the ACEA, A3/B4, API SL, BMW LL-01 other than Castrol Edge SAE 0W30 Euro and the Pennzoil Platinum Euro SAE 5W/40. Then I saw this video which actually makes sense... and then I still wanted to make sure and that's when I checked my x5 owner's manual and to my surprise... it says "Approved oils belong to the SAE classifications 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 and 5W-30". The online version of my user's manual only mentions the 5w-40 and the 5W-30 but on the manual I have, it says 4 different approved grades. I guess it's still best to check our owner's user manual to make sure... I am just surprised that the BMW dealership here was not even aware of this until I showed them my owner's manual. Now, I am changing my own oil tomorrow or this coming weekend and now, I don't have to worry about the high priced 1L bottle of oil from BMW. Happy learning everyone.

Just in case no one else answers. In brief: You can go a step lower than the first rating and one step higher on the second rating from the manufacturer's recommended viscosity. Lower to higher. Never the reverse. And just because you can, doesn't always mean you should. It depends on climate, as well. For example: My M54B25 is spec'd for 5w-30. I CAN use as far as 0w-40 with minor repercussions IF it suits my climate. I cannot use 10w30, 10w40 or 5w30, etc. Check your owners manual and then change your oil only if you really think it's necessary. An N52 is a solid engine. If you're not having any issues and keeping up with regular oil changes, then there's really no need to overthink the oil.

I have a BMW 520iA 2000 M52. I have heard that I MUST use the LL-04 on this one. What's so special about LL-04 and that I can not just use another fully synthetic oil. Someone who can clarify this for me.

Hi doc What do you recommend for a 530i with an m54 and 120000 miles ? Thanks
@Purvis5134 жыл бұрын
In case Dean doesn't reply: M54 is spec'd for 5w-30 in America or 0w-40 in Europe. But it all depends on climate, too. At 120k, make sure your CCV is in good shape, do the O2 pilot mod to boost the crankcase vacuum (super easy and inexpensive), then switch to 0w-40 if you live in a place with very cold winters. If your winters are mild, it won't make much difference to change the rating you use. It's the failing CCV that eventually causes the M54 to burn oil.

Can I top up with 5w-40 without knowing what oil was used during the previous oilchange
@2jz4life354 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, you don't wan't to mix 2 different name brand oil because different additive is used by each company.. With that said, in a emergency any oil is better than no oil.

I used to use 0w 30 on my N53 (don’t know why) but was burning oil quicker than a tramp on chips but when I went to 5w 30 and I don’t have much of a problem anymore. It’s done 92k now but I change oil & filter every 4K miles. Guess I’ll have to change to 10w 40 soon if I get oil burning again. Cheers for advice. 👍🏻

that should make zero difference as both oils perform the same (viscosity wise) if not well below freezing temperature.

I don't have any leaks and I just getting a bit irritated cause I got it for half a year, and I am spending money to make it perfect
