The Medalion had an older blend of cognac and due to high demand in Asia over the last 10-15 years the blending stock thinned out so the new younger blend was developed. I would pick Martel Medalion before Remy, Hennessy, or Courvoisier VSOP's when it was available

Great review, but wrong glass. The right glass makes a world of a difference. An investment in a cognac snifter is well worth it. I prefer the original version, the Martell Medallion. The Medallion was more savory, spicier, older in taste, woody. The Medallion was the cognac that sommeliers would prefer, over the Red Barrel, hands down. The Red Barrel is a great marketing move, but it targets the younger, less experienced market, that puts a primum on smooth and sweet vs. character, flavor and spice. To each, their own, I suppose. Cheers!

Why are all the cognac from the main brands always 40% ABV only?

40% ABV (80 proof) is the legal minimum allowed in France. They would probably make it lower than that if they could get away with it. The marketing people at the brands will say that the product tastes the best at 40% but a more honest answer is that it allows them to stretch their supply further, produce more bottles, and increase profits.
