As a railran it's exciting to see trains like this, but at the same time you also have to keep in mind that there's a crew out there somewhere not working because the RRs would rather run mega trains regardless of the effect on their machines & infrastructure, customers and the public than pay a few more wages.
@opvjg9 ай бұрын
Many municipalities limit how many trains can pass in an hour. One rail acquisition in the Chicago area almost failed because the buyer wanted to run 10 trains per day (both ways). The uproar was unbelievable.

Maybe the railroad industry is like every other one in the US and they can't find enough qualified workers who will actually show up and work on a day to day basis.

In the 1990s this would have been 2 or three trains. This very long train makes the bean counters and Wall Street extremely happy but makes the small and medium sized customers choke!

What do you mean? How do the medium sized customers choke?
@trevormaxwell81349 ай бұрын

@leadslinger499 ай бұрын
Exactly, it's been that way for a long time. Not only longer trains. But, attempting to do it with less crew members. When I started working we had a Conductor and 2 Brakemen on a road crew. Now, they want 3 mile trains and an Engineer only. Who can watch a train that size. It's not Safety First any more. It appears to be efficiency and the bottom line first.

UP has been doing this for a while on the route over the divide in Washington/idaho. It works just fine. Sometimes 6 engines for one z train. 3 up front and 3 in the middle for 180 car length.

So you have a grain train hitched to a double-stack train. Two commodities that are typically at the opposite ends of the priority spectrum (Intermodal trains in some places are granted a higher speed limit than merchandise/manifest freights). Makes one wonder -- does the grain train get a speed boost because there's intermodal hitched to it, or does the intermodal get a speed nerf by being hitched to a grain shuttle... (just kidding, I know the equipment with the lowest speed rating dictates the max allowed speed of the consist)

I could see 2 grain trains being put together for part of a run if they're going in the same general direction. I could see 2 stack trains getting put together for similar purposes. But why would you put a loaded drag freight with a higher priority port stack train? This combo makes no sense.
