Where to begin... so Amtrak is having a power crisis in Chicago (typical for the winter when the reliability of equipment is tested), and resulted in an extremely rare occurrence.
BNSF power would lead the westbound Empire Builder right out of Chicago two days in a row simply because they didn't have enough extra working motors aside to fulfill BNSF's three unit requirement due to frigid temperatures.
The 8039 had arrived two days earlier before being sent back west, while the 5272 was turned loose the next day.
In this video you'll see both the BNSF led 7 and 8 on the same day (January 6th) along with a Dash 8 filling in on Borealis train 1340. The next day (January 7th), the 5272 takes 7 back west.
