I think its because of the fact that he mentioned that the time was January 2020 and then said some other stuff before the line "then the funniest thing happened." During that gap between the setup and the punchline people forgot the the setup of it being January 2020. But honestly this isn't an excuse because I think the punchline should already be obvious using context clues the moment he said "so much better infact, that in January of... 2020". If you cant use context clues to figure out what the message is right at that moment there is a good chance that the "then the funniest thing happened" line would go over your head.

It's kind of ironic, because on the surface that song seems like just a silly song, and pretty much everyone who saw it at the time thought of it as such, but going back after the context that Make Happy and Inside give about Bo, it's actually pretty tragic. It feels like he's singing about expressing his pain and having no one understand or hear it, all while everyone around him is just laughing and not taking it seriously. Which I think was intentional.

You know this is like the hundredth guy I've watch react to Bo Burnham! Not a complaint because I love watching everyone watch the genius of Bo but I've realized these people who react to his videos will never get the same experience as Bo Burnham fans who have watched him from the beginning. Getting to know him and his style of comedy in What. The evolution of Bo Burnham and his comedy and how hard it hit after Make Happy thinking he was never gonna preform again and then he comes back and it is just an emotional Rollercoaster and I love it. Love your reaction, please do the rest. It's so refreshing to watch someone understand when bo is being serious and when its funny. Some reactors laugh at serious parts because they don't have the connection between the shows and haven't fully experienced Bo Burnhams shows and what they mean. Love your reaction again and glad you picked up on his mental state!

Also, he used all practical lighting. No special effects. Every bit of lighting and projection you see is all practical. As in, done right there in the moment not added later in editing
@calcramer3 жыл бұрын
But how did he project video of himself (behind him, on the wall) in real time, coming from a different camera angle? What was added in editing was very effective use of digital zoom ins and outs-giving movement to an otherwise stationary setup.

You noticed what he was trying to convey.. his whole being went into how he felt in total as far as feeling isolated... he gave you a glimpse of how he actually saw the world and for most people; it went overhead. Yeah, you gotta rewatch and pay attention to what he says during the special lol. Trust, he didn't get better. The pandemic messed him up even more than the 5 years before. Don't even record yourself doing rewatch, you'll enjoy it a lot more if u just give it time without recording yourself. fun fact. Bo won a grammy for this song
@lewismaddox41323 жыл бұрын
It's beautiful, extremely poignant and heart wrenching. Can you hear the note of lament in his voice? He misses the very thing that was the catalyst of his anxiety. He's playing out, in his room, the very thing that caused his panic attacks yet what he'd geared himself up to welcome back. Remember what he said, "Part of me needs you, part of me fears you,"? There was a tv series in the late 1900's called "Cheers". The theme song went, "Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name." Now he's singing, "We're going to go where everybody, knows everybody." Who is everybody? Look in the mirror. He's not talking about a bar where you can go in and the room yells, "Norm". Ted Dansen and Woody Harrelson aren't waiting to make you a drink. This was recorded after he had decided to come out of exile and then was mandated to return to. When you are nearly suicidal in your anxiety, frustrated because you felt confidence in the mental health progress you had made and then stymied in gauging that progress, climate change falls waaaay down on your priority list.
@Katy-sh3ru2 жыл бұрын
Duuude, you're the only other person I've seen make that connection with the Cheers theme ❤️ The other song that refrain reminds me of is Leonard Cohen 'Everybody Knows' - as in the second iteration he ends on "everybody knows" I think the tone of LC's song fits. "Everybody knows that the dice are loaded, everybody knows that the good guys lost" And although I agree with you that in this certain frame of mind, climate change falls down the list, in other of his songs it's obvious that climate change can also be one of the sources of his anxiety too, like in 'That Funny Feeling'
@lewismaddox41322 жыл бұрын
@@Katy-sh3ru I agree with that for the most part. When he sings about his apathy for climate change it may just be in the moment, or it may be just for effect. Like your Cohen reference. I do know he's always thinking. Part of his genius is his relentless brain, which is probably a curse to some extent. There's a reason why creative genius so often go to creative graves. That active a mind always swings to empathy and the easily witnessed suffering in the world. I hope he continues to work through it. His art seems to be a great tonic.
@Katy-sh3ru2 жыл бұрын
@@lewismaddox4132 it does. That bit in Inside where he's playing himself as a computer game and he seems to be a lot happier when playing the piano. Though it obviously also has it's torments. His art sure is a tonic to a lot of others, too. My mind is also always going, but sadly I find it very difficult to actually create much. Maybe that will change in time. I hope so.

Preceding something with "you want to hear a joke" doesn't mean that the following is a joke. I don't think Bo considers the audience intelligent. That's why he adds the laugh track into a story that isn't funny. The fake audience thinks it's funny because Bo said it's going to be a joke. I think his Kanye Rant video was him expressing disrespect for them. To him, they are mindless.
@-Rambi-3 жыл бұрын
Its heads down, not hands down. Then how to interpret that is up to each listener but I see it as worship. "Hands up in the air, heads down, and pray for me." Personally, I think that the second part is supposed to artistically show his panic attack with lyrics from his darker inner.
