This is simply not true. Good comedy requires vulnerability. Look at Bobcat Goldthwait and Andrew Dice Clay, both comedians who were portraying characters, but who was the better comedian? Whereas Dice got by on saying the shit that most people wished that had the stones to say, Goldthwait's appeal was that he conveyed how a lot of us FEEL most of the time: on the edge and ready to snap, i.e. the feeling Bo Burnham communicates so well in this song.

He’s amongst the best, if not the best of our generation. Bill Hicks was of his generation, Carlin and Pryor for theirs, and now it’s Bo. All of them, so different from each other, still they showed their vulnerability on stage in such an authentic way. Very few people who truly love comedy are not extremely vulnerable as well. What we won’t agree on is that “good comedy requires vulnerability”… they’re are a lot of great comedians that do not get very vulnerable… in many cases there anecdotes are fake to push a joke, the jokes are surface or just silly… I don’t want to name & downplay some of the greats, because they’re still great… but Bo’s work is next level it’s tragedy with humor on the side, depression as an entree with a dad joke as an appetizer… he somehow merges his own vulnerabilities he’s actually dealing with as a performer & comedian into his own performances… that is super super rare. That is PEAK level comedy, in itself the whole performance wrapped up in a ribbon is tragic yet hilarious how it’s presented… not even mentioning a specific piece of the skit but just the theme. Running around from piano to mic, to led light show, to “live” audio mixing & feedback…. It’s next level comedy. Even the greats right now bow down to this man & his ability to perform on every level as if he’s not even trying that hard…

This is genuinely one of the best pieces of musical art in the last few years. It was him telling the world that he is not okay, cleverly masked and layered behind comedy all while having insane production value. It's incredibly intimate and you realize how truly vulnerable he is being as the song unfolds. The Pringle can and the burrito were just a metaphor for how he felt. He could fit performing and happiness into the same burrito. The Pringles at the bottom of the can are unreachable. The yells quickly cutting back to music like they're being choked out. The correlation between "I wouldn't have gotten half of it" and "They don't get half of it". It's really A1 art.

It's powerful. He did the same social commentary in "White Woman's Instagram", and it kills me inside to relate. This self-obsessed woman's monotonous, picture perfect depiction of her life is comically exaggerated for us. Then we hit the post where she writes this touching tribute to her dead mom. She speaks from the heart about her life since her death, alludes that her father is deceased too... before jumping right back in to her staged photography posts. As someone who lost their mom in 2010, JFC, I wish I could Kareoke this, but I would break down crying at "A Goat Cheese Salad...a backlit hammock...", just as I always do every time I hear it. She "goes back to doing her job" of keeping up this appearance she has set for herself for the other 364 days of the year... It's her brand. But the 10 year anniversary of her death is the shred if permission she gives herself to express the painful things in her life too. And I am grateful Bo used this performance to do the same. 😭 "....a Goat Cheese Salad".

Yeah i'm kind of shocked by these songs, there's the first layer of comedy and then the internal dialogue of irony but then it just hits that layer of truth most comics are way too afraid to go into, that dark honesty about self doubt and fear of never meeting the standards you set for yourself. The only other comic I know of who was able to put his own life out there like that was Greg Giraldo, he was always known as "that insult comic guy for the roasts" but Greg's worst insults were always reserved for himself and the reason he was funny was because he noticed all the details of any situation he was in and could zero in on the horrific but funny aspects of every day irony, having a mind like that is why I think so many of these guys want to be numbed out by drugs. They want to be just as oblivious as the people they make fun of and the fact that they can't seems to be why they're miserable in real life.

You can see and hear it at the end of this one, he's gasping for breath, shaking, and that final yell was not scripted, nor was the mic drop and running off stage. He did three shows in New York I think, all of them filmed for the purpose of making the special, and you can see some sudden cuts happening in this video. I believe he quit the tour shortly afterwards to focus on his mental health

'I wouldn't have gotten half of this', 'they don't even know the half of this'. He's always been fairly open about his mental health struggles, during this time he had panic attacks, several social anxieties and depression. It's not really referring to a normal adult life (struggles), but more his personal mental health struggles and all the obligations and pressures belonging to his job fuelling those. His 'thank you, I hope you're happy' a couple minutes after 'as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself' make me feel like he has a hard time accepting his mental health struggles, especially within his comedic persona. How big is the divide between having social anxiety, panic attacks and depression and performing on front of thousands of people, representing your own brand, carrying an audience and making people laugh and appreciate their lives? He's trying to sell something he can't feel, must be so confronting and he can't back out without disappointing his audience, which would make him feel even worse. Having said that, if the message you're hearing helps you and works, stick to that.

fuck dude i would do anything to go back to when this special was released. i’ve always felt so connected to bo’s work as an artist and i’m so grateful to him for making me realize a lot about making art at a very young age. it’s just truly insane to see a comic telling their audience directly how much of a toll doing shows for them is taking on him and criticizing them to their faces after performing an entire special for them that they paid to see. to this day i’ve never seen someone so perfectly express their personal struggles related to their art and those consuming it through that art to those consuming it. i know that’s the obviously what makes the “i hope YOU’RE happy” hurt especially bad but it’s just interesting to interpret as an artist when such a big part of that is pressure to continue doing something if people like it no matter how unhappy it’s making you, when you just want to do what you enjoy instead. it hurts to see how many incredible artists end up burnt out beyond repair and permanently damaged from pushing themselves too hard for the sake of others. i hope you’re happy too bo.

I think what hurts most about this song is simply how wrong Bo was at the time. To me, make happy is a 1 hour piece of comedy followed by this absolute masterpiece saying "I wanted to tell a profound message about my struggles as a human being but everyone just expects me to tell silly jokes about pringles". I for one discovered him primarily through inside, and i fell in love with the insight and introspection he brought to lets call "the human condition". And most fans of his that ive met feel the same way. He literally “couldn’t handle” the pressure he felt to “make [his audience] happy.” Despite the success and the love fans threw at him, he didn’t feel fully satisfied, fully happy. There’s a lot of pressure placed on public figures to be Exactly what their fans expect them to be 100% of the time. Most people see success and think rich + adored = happy but that’s just not how it works. It’s very relatable to someone who’s struggled with anxiety and depression the majority of their life; the cruelty of it is no matter what’s going on in your life, no matter how happy other people would be in your [Bo’s] situation, you just cannot feel truly satisfied/happy no matter how hard you try. There’s a great irony that accompanies many comedians: make people laugh & have a great time… then go home and be miserable. Feel like you’re letting them down when they gave you everything you have.

​@brigittescott8128 from my experience with him over the last 8 years and the subtext from the songs on Inside and the extras that he cut and released with the outtakes/bad takes, it seemed to me like he was/still is suffering with extremely deep imposter syndrome and regret for the edgy jokes he used to make in this older material, on top of his depression and anxiety that was hitting it's peak back then with Netflix breathing down his neck to make them more content. His jump from KZbin to touring with Netflix specials and also doing Vines, and getting to this breaking point where he was feeling empty and unfulfilled, deeply anxious and forcing himself to keep going to not disappoint anyone, ending with a spiral and desire to just run away and never come back in this age of constant connection through the screen in your pocket, it's completely relatable and heartbreaking to learn about. Inside was an excellent encapsulation of that gnawing relapse and the doubling-down on the predatory nature of companies on the internet, and the Outtakes give a very real look into the simmering self-loathing just beneath the surface when he messed up on a take. So many people expect him to be perfect, Netflix are likely hounding him to make more content after the release of Inside, I just hope that he finds things he enjoys doing and gets back to that place of contentment he found before Covid hit because I don't think his "in 2030 I'll be 40 and kill myself then" line was completely a joke

Always coming back to this. I’ve been a Bo fan since the early KZbin days, and I have to admit I wasn’t getting it either until this special. I remember seeing this for the first time and being floored by the way he bears his soul and his struggles. Not everyone knows, but he took an indefinite hiatus following this special because he was suffering full blown panic attacks during shows. And then 4 years later he’s working on new material and planning a tour to attempt putting himself back out there as a live performer and Covid hits and the lockdowns wreck all of those plans. This is the context that the seed of his “Inside” special was planted. I feel bad for everyone in the audience that wanted a way to tell Bo that they empathized with his mental health struggles, and wanted to applaud him for having the courage and talent to share himself and be vulnerable in such a creative way. What could they do but applaud? An audience doesn't have a ton of nuance in how they can reply to something. The applause feels like "oh yay, he's going back to the burrito thing, ME LIKE JOKES" but I think a ton of people at this performance likely wanted to say a whole lot more than clap clap clap, it's just deeply ironic that the only way to say "we see you, we hear you, and we love you" is also the same way you tell a performer "dance, monkey." Every once in a while, I come back to this song. Just knowing the backstory, what happened after this show... I'm "fine" until the middle, but after that I just can't help myself and start tearing up. And after it's over, I sit here, take deep breaths, fighting with my tear glands on salt water rights, while adding one more comment to the previous 34,5 thousand of praise, wishes of good health, interpretations and those selfish little comments, which are like "oh, yeah, have the same issues"... no, you don't, sit back down! Well... I did my part. I commented. Now it becomes "one more unread message" on a board. I better get back to work now.

i glad I could read your comment im a newer fan of Bo Burnham. I've watched him for the couple years after inside (started watching his stuff this year) and I'm so mad that I didn't bother to see his other content when I first found out. Its normal to add on to compliments of a popular person but for him in my eyes, I believe the comments people give out to him are very respectful and not empty. There are many loyal people, and I find myself sad seeing him fall apart over the years and his latest work. I myself have never really enjoyed comedians or had a interest in singers or artists like other people did until now. I practically know all of his songs, memorized some of his jokes without even realizing it and I come back to rewatch videos sometimes. If he does not make any more works or do standup, I will appreciate him for what he's done for us. All I know is I was happy to find someone like this on the internet with all the current stuff going on. I do like feeling relatable to content but I do not say so or shout it by the rooftops. I wish him the best and I hope the rest do too. One last thing to add on, I really loved the part at the end with the door from Inside and him walking out to see Lorene and the dog because it was like walking over to the one thing that makes him happy. and if that makes him happy, I'm all for it because everyone should have that safe place.

I understand what you mean, I think (and I'm already sitting down, thanks) and your comment reminds me of something i often feel when listening to others' reactions or ideas about the things (music/Books/art/scenery/whatever) that mean something to me, or that touched a nerve at certain times and evoke feelings i had forgotten or give me this sense of all of a sudden being understood or my feelings making sense or are perfectly captured within that one thing. One thing i'll say is that however shallow or self involved other may seem or perhaps they even are that way.. who knows, many people can't really articulate their deepest thoughts and feelings and you'll never completely feel what they try to say clumsily. There is only so many words in the English language (and only so many more in every other language and many people just arent wordsmiths if you know what i mean) and you never truly know how others feel, you can't feel it for them and that is the limitation of the human experience and in many ways why loneliness is within all of us and something we fear and find comfort in at the same time. Idk even know if what i am saying makes sense to you, but if it doesnt then it is what it is. My bigger point is that art is one of the only ways to give an understanding or a structure to the feelings we can't really show in other ways, good art touches something inside you but it can differ person to person what feeling that is and that is what makes it so great. People dont all feel in the same intensity or have low points as low as others, that doesnt make the feeling of some sort of connection, belonging, whatever it is, a piece of art (i hate that pretentious term "piece of art" but i dont know another way to word that so) gives them and that is why it sounds like they have no clue when they try to explain the connection or feelings that they experience. Never underestimate how similar we humans all are in our life experiences and our mental highs and lows, how much we all have the same fears and desires when it comes down to it. Also never overestimate how deep or different your emotions are, how alone you are in your suffering or your search for meaning. I used to think nobody truly understood the brilliance of certain songs, and i was a rare case when it came to how truly intense my emotions could be and how empty i could feel at the same time, that is why i guarded the art that gave me the sense that there was a way to make sense and make my thoughts fit in a structure (vague im sorry, i am no writer and i have the tendency to think as i type or talk). I felt that others were too shallow and too "happy" or braindead to understand. As i got older i found out that I wasnt that special and that was kind of nice, because that made me understand i wasnt alone and almost everyone in one way or another had felt like i did at times, even if they couldnt put that into words if you asked them. And even still, good art isnt something you can exclusively understand one way and all the others just dont understand the intention. It is open to interpretation, and each person has their own experiences to color that interpretation. All it should do is invoke something and that is all you know for sure we share when we both love the same song or art piece Done rambling, you can get back to work now if you wanna and ill do the same

@@emma0348 I... might be the only one who read this. Thinking about it is sad... Man, I really have to improve my wordsmithing skills and hammer out, what I meant. "What I meant"... seems selfish and ignorant, but not how it should have been. Nobody can fully understand, what he went through, how he felt and maybe that's okay, as we are all different. Our experience is our own and even if two people live next to each other for the rest of their lives, when they look back on things, they will have different thoughts and... that's alright. My personal thought is that we should not assume, that we know how he felt, when we don't even know the background... It's like saying that the guy in the sombrero hat, who plays the guitar is great, but the background is a post-apo... appopo... apocalipso... post-destruction world and he just gave up on thinking straight... after his dog died 20 years ago, pre-destruction. See what I did there? That little twist at the end is all thats needed to change the assumption of the background. All in all, I just don't want to point a finger and say "I know", when I clearly don't and if people who read it understand the meaning behind my words and "sit down" to think about it, that's great, while if they don't, that's... well not as much, but it's alright. PS: If it would be me, then all the praises/best wishes/aso would feel empty... because there are just too many. Sometimes, you just need that one person in your life to hug you and say: It's alright, you're safe here... back in 1955, Calvin Klein.

I’ve watched this so many times but still absolutely adore it every time. I was blown away when someone pointed out to me that the burrito toppings were an analogy to having too many things shoved onto your plate. You often don’t realize you’ve put too much on yourself until it’s too late. And when those who you look up to for guidance don’t warn you that you might be taking on too much it can feel completely helpless. I can only imagine what challenges Bo has faced with his mental health in his chosen field. I know we’ll never fully understand but I appreciate him peeling back the curtain a little bit so people know they’re not alone.
