Bo Burnham has been very fixated on how selfish he perceives his own need for attention to be. It's nice to see him in a setting where so many people are deeply resonating with work he made not because of a cult of personality, but because the work itself needed to be made. Inside really feels like a magnum opus work and it's not coming from selfishness, it's coming from a deep connection with others.

It is also done in a single take in the special, so if you look closely as Bo gets to the outro, I think you can catch a little smile on his face when he realises he's done a good take and gotten all the way through the song, and then he just really enjoys playing the outro (i.e. "hey, what can you say, we were overdue..." repeated).

@PenneySounds
@PenneySounds 2 жыл бұрын
For him that feeling is probably impostor syndrome You can almost hear how his thought process went down by listening to "Comedy" Step 1: "Things are awful right now. I should try to make something that will help people cope and feel a little bit better about things. Maybe that will help" Step 2: "Oh my god, what a conceited and self congratulatory thing to think. Nobody cares what I have to say, and it's definitely not going to matter to anyone or make any kind of difference for people. Now I have to write a song mocking myself for ever thinking something so conceited and pretentious" Step 3: *Releases special. Special resonates with millions, has a massive impact on the cultural zeitgeist, and transforms the very medium of stand up comedy forever, while making untold numbers of people feel less alone during an extremely hard time and inspiring them creatively* Step 4: "Why's everybody talking about my stupid special like it's important? Just smile and laugh it off, they'll get over the novelty eventually and realise it was just a silly video that's not important"

@@PenneySounds i think the extremely insecure idea of himself in comedy is resolved in the special though. As is that contradictory dichotomy of wanting to create to give to his audience but feeling like nothing he says is/should be important and no one will get anything out of it, that most likely played a large role in his anxiety and panic attacks. I think he is in a much more understanding place now where he understands his impact and I think he is happy that people are taking his message and retelling it and expanding on it. He understands that the story is bigger than him but that doesn't mean his words don't hold value. But it most definitely is very surreal to see the real impact you've made on so many people and to see a part of your story being retold by someone else.

@@Mx.RumpusParable so your argument is that he wasn’t in isolation just because he lived with another person and their dogs? i lived with 2 other people and a dog at the height of the pandemic, but i didn’t leave my house for 2 months. sure felt very isolating to me

Bo was exactly what we needed when he released Inside. His reaction to his work from a fly on the wall perspective is amazing. He got to see it from a new set of eyes and you can see the astonishment. I think generally people don’t sing along at his specials. Especially his new one. So this was probably wild for him lol

Not only was this version profoundly touching, but i think It means so much more. I find It fascinating (and a little bit ironic in restrospect) that Inside has become such a phenomenon through social media, and specially TikTok. For us long time Bo Burnham fans, It felt like the farewell that we never got to have back in the day, and for new fans It meant so much, encapsulating the experience of the lockdown, anxiety and depression perfectly. This song in particular is so specific yet so accurate, an excelent take on modernity. I recomend CJ the X video essay on this topic and Inside as a whole. As someone who had anxiety and a deep existential crisis years ago, Bo helped me a lot, and im so happy to see people knowing the lyrics, and knowing myself that, even though he might never perform again, his legacy lives on. Im crying while listening the full version. Thanks Phoebe, thanks Bo.

Just watching him light up when he hears others laughing or singing to it. It’s just so humbling to see no one fixated on him too though. I like how it’s just like he’s a normal person in the crowd. And everyone is focused on Phoebe too, bc it’s her show I guess but it’s crazy to think about this all from his perspective. He wrote and filmed a whole special in his home with no help, it was emotional and creative and some how captured all the aspects of depression or anxiety through the pandemic. And you can tell how stressed he is through filming and hearing someone else sing his music and others finding it funny and entertaining is incredible. He doesn’t have a spot light on him and he can just sit and enjoy the amazing things he’s created.

He looks relaxed and happy. Awesome to see the camera guy just give a quick glimpse of the man behind the song, then take the eyes off of him to give us the view Bo is taking in while sitting discreetly in the crowd, watching so many people enjoying and singing along with his lyrics. In other words... "There it is again, that funny feeling..." ❤️ I wish him all of the best feelings in life from here until the end, whether that be in seven years or many years beyond. Love you Bo.
