I think my biggest take away from the song is that the whole "be strong, just keep your head up" mentality when you're suicidal is that it's just as unhelpful as comitting suicide. Nothing good comes from being told "just be happy", just as nothing good comes from ending your life. I like that Bo compares them like that and then rather than just bashing coping mechanisms, he explains that suicide is an epidemic, and that those who are suffering should be able to get support.

God, Bo's poetic/artistic genius really knows no bounds. Not only does he make all these actual strong points through his songs, but he writes it in such a way that if you're not actually listening its going to go over your head. He puts the comedy and lyricism together with actual impactful things, and I admire that so much. I'm really glad you've found Bo, and are enjoying his content. Your reactions are awesome. My sister and I saw him do Make Happy a couple times, twice at a small club when he was still working out material and some of the songs sounded different. The first time he had this song in the set, next time he didn’t, and then when we saw him on the official Make Happy tour in LA which I think was towards the beginning of the tour it still wasn’t in there.

@gracexcon4 ай бұрын
Yeah, the whole point of this song is that if you're genuinely suffering from mental health problems, getting your wisdom and your inspiration from many mainstream "inspirational" songs isn't going to actually help because true self love can't come from 3 minutes of basic life advice. To a person who is genuinely struggling with depression and suicidal ideation, platitudes like "be brave", "stay strong" and "you're a survivor" mean very little, and do nothing to solve the actual problem. And he's saying that hearing "kill yourself" should be placed in the same category, as weightless words from someone, like musical artists, who are far removed from you. If you want to heal and learn to love yourself and your life again, the only way to do that is with real professional help. It's so nice to see you understand that, so many people can't see past the "kill yourself" aspect of this song, and miss the actual message.

I have a bit of guilt around this song. When Linkin Park released their last album, I found it super mainstream and generic, and it reminded me of performers like Katy Perry, in particular the song "Battle Symphony" which made me think of "Brave" and "Roar". So I posted this Bo Burnham song in the comments as a criticism of the shallowness of that kind of music. Then their lead singer killed himself Now, I'm not claiming my comment caused that. He likely never saw it. But it still feels bad.

What i get out of this probably shouldn't be groundbreaking, but i believe he's considered doing every single method of suicide mentioned in this video, except for maybe the ones clearly added for humor like marrying courtney love, and i think it hints at just how deep his own depression reached, and the fact that he mentions missed signs of depression halfway through highlights that, because this is also from make happy, that final show before his hiatus, and yet i've not seen a single person talk about this... when it's not rubbed in their faces, like in can't handle this, nobody takes mental health seriously, or, honestly, even notices.

Great reaction, my only comment is Bo is a genius at communications, my only fear and maybe my fear is unjust, but I have a feeling that people don't always listen carefully all the time, humans are very lazy is that regard. but I hope it's just my perceptions that off and that people listen more than I am aware. I can certainly see where many would be upset about this title if they don't take the time to actually listen and sadly this happens more than we care to know. many I feel are so distracted with BS today that they have ADD IDK.
