To be fair, Bo has admitted in interviews that he was a little bit harsh in his past songs about religion. He has been more open minded on the subject which is why he threw in some religious topics in his song problematic and all eyes on me.
@theperson8539
@theperson8539 2 жыл бұрын
Really? I doubt he'd be referring to this one, considering that all of the points he raised were towards genuinely concerning things then and remain an issue to this day. The issue with any religion is that it claims an autonomy on absolutely everything; all aspects of life and existence. This makes it so that a religion (fundamentally) cannot be inoffensive; by definition, it must offend and discredit all other such claims completely.

As far as I'm aware he has (repeatedly) talked about how his teen humor is bad in regards of how he handles the topic of homosexuality, not religion. That tracks if you consider that in Problematic he's judging My Whole Family, which has the punchline of "am I gay? lol" that is something he's openly despised for years (and not really any big religious topics other than a couple of lines). Problematic is also a visual parody of how apology videos happen, with the obvious self-crucification they include as well as making himself a thirst trap, which is something people will do following apology videos to move the topic away from their mistake. Overall I think his take on it is having the punchline of his jokes being prejudiced against minorities that have done nothing but be who they are.

You know you're in for a treat when the reaction video is like 7 times longer than the actual video. Very appropriate to go on a rant about religon on a video called Rant, nice work. I hope you reacts to more videos with this theme because as an athiest I think is super facinating to listen to other people talk about their religous experience especially since you seem to have a very open minded mindset and have continued to believe even if you dont practise it. All in all a great video.

Read Leviticus 20:13. You can't just ignore passages if it's truly the "word of god". Having faith without being faithful to all the words of god I'm pretty sure is a sin, unless you ignore those parts too I guess. In which case it's just illegitimate. Is this not all just another form of religious hypocrisy?

Thanks for acknowledging his impressive rhymes. What looks at first like nothing more than a list of puns has such a deeper meaning which opens up all of these discussions about religion. THAT is what I find the most brilliant about Bo's music: he mocks a musical form even as he uses that form to deliver a powerful message far deeper than any song that uses that form in a sincere way. hashtag-deep. :D P.S. All religions are just blind men describing an elephant.

Fantastic reaction! My mother is/was a pastor and we have had some deep conversations on the subject. Her church lost 10+ percent of the members a few years back when they openly accepted the LGBTQ community. I also could not accept that if you’re a great person your entire life but are without faith you wouldn’t go to heaven but a horrible person on death row who committed murder would be accepted if they truly repented and asked for forgiveness. This is why churches focus sermons on the book of Matthew and similar passages that avoid those topics. Bo is such a brilliant person who has a good understanding of life and delivers a deep message in the form of comedy.

This is maybe my favourite bo burnham reaction from you (although there are songs I like more by him). Probably because I'm also from a (german) evangelical background. The rant is so full of good lines and great thoughts about church, about god and the way we want him to be or make him be. I'm so glad that you totally get it because of your own experience with Christianity. That makes this video double interesting. I can totally relate to your thoughts and the examples you gave about prayer or false humility. I absolutely know what you mean and it breaks my heart. Big Ooooof! I love how you pointed out the prayer thing. I also grew up super Christian and still am today but I'm also super critical of a lot of it and a big thing that came along with the prayer thing is that I'm also bisexual and I new for a while and just kinda ignored it, but at 17 it hit me hard and I couldn't even ignore it anymore and started praying to be straight for YEARS. Like 17-21 and I got prayer from my youth leaders, my other youth group friends, church leaders, guest preachers and my family and after years of praying to be straight, reading my bible, quoting scripture and it not working I did blame myself for it. Like maybe I wasn't praying hard enough, or believing enough, or that simply me liking guys, even with never acting on it at this point, was so sinful that my prayers wouldn't be answered. It got so bad I started just praying to die cause it would be easier and if I died before ever acting on it I would still have a chance at heaven. Im now 27 and like I said still fairly Christian, I even finished reading through the whole bible a few months ago. But I'm also openly bi, although I still have my own reservations on it and honestly it still holds me back from dating a guy cause it scares me it would be unforgivable. But I've given up on trying to pray it away lol. My family still tries but that's about it. But all that to say I really enjoyed your video and you takes on all these videos.

One thing that you'd probably want to know about is that I know that Catholics don't appreciate being separated from Christians (I think you said a couple of times things like "I'm not coming from a Catholic perspective but a Christian one") which is like saying Catholics are not Christians. I may only be aware of this from marrying into a Catholic family, but it seems a fair critique. I'm an atheist (not one of the dickish one's though I hope) so this isn't my battle I know but if I were talking about these things publicly I'd want to know about this just so I could consider it in the future. ayy great reaction, good job. interesting to hear your stance on the topic. For me the way that made the most sense for religion is something like Fate. Going the force of nature route escapes much of the hypocrisy and of God's blurred human-inhuman style. It mainly promotes acceptance of what is, and for things like moral guidance you can draw from other places eg the people in your life.

I love your reactions and perspective. Especially this one as you have a unique experience growing up in a very devout Protestant household. However (I am not religious at all), and this may be silly, Catholics are Christians. Protestants are Christians also. So when you say Catholics and Christians as different things, it isn't accurate from what I have been taught. You are also not the only person I have heard say this but my religious studies teacher said the belief in Christ as the savior and God's son is what makes a "Christian". I guess I am saying that people should be saying Protestant, or specifying Lutheran or Universalism or Baptist. If anyone has insight I would love to hear and discuss.

As someone with a lot of baggage from being raised in a church that was very hateful and discouraged free thought, analysis, and questioning scripture this song was always incredibly cathartic and your reaction was very comforting. It seems like we had/have very similar issues with the Church and reconciling that with our individual fate. I remember coming home crying because I was told to shut up after asking questions about the particular passages my CCD class covered because my interpretation was more historical context meets allegory instead of cold hard truth. I’m also queer so that didn’t help. I now focus on folk magic wich while influenced by Christianity (saints, Jesus Mary and Joseph) is less all encompassing you’ll burn in hell for intrusive thoughts and more there’s something out there do good to others and the land and you’ll revive help in return.

Speaking as a Christian here. (Salvation army church) I view god less as a wish granting genie or a greater force that has so much more to deal with and more as a Dad or best friend. Just someone you can come to and rant about your day and that's how I view prayer. Everyone's different though I just felt the need the voice my opinion on this matter lol

when I think about faith, religion, I remember this one morning with my grandparents gramma: what are we? baptist? or protestant? grandpa: ye and that's how little it means.

One thing before my comments - it's the Protestant Churches and the Catholic Church(es, the Russian and Greek Orthodoxes also function as Catholic, but I cant remember which has its own pope). There's dozens of denominations under Protestantism. Not the Christian Church and Catholic Church. (Only pointing it out because I have to correct my pastor uncle soooooooooo much when he claims catholics are non Christians that are going to hell... he's not my favorite pastor 👎) I love calling out hypocrisy in the church (the church being the non monolith but monolithic looking from the outside group of all denominations - protestants, catholics, orthodox, etc). I get defensive of attacking the faith aspects, but the people all fall short (I am myself a proud Christian who has had to unlearn a lot of the people influenced things and struggled for years because I'm a queer Christian but it took until I was 23 to be able to finally say I'm not straight because I was so scared of it) Bo is on point about the institutions and the (loud) leadership. (By loud I mean who we hear from in popular culture, mega church pastors and televangelists [except you, Billy Graham♡ but def your son] and ordained men who become politicians) I wish more Christians were raised to read the texts in the original languages. Did you know Jesus healed a man brought to him by a Roman soldier who called the man his lover? Most people don't because of how it's translated. If I'd read the gospels in their original language, maybe I wouldn't have been terrified of my own identity. I've listened to sermons and sat there getting so upset because the preacher was literally wrong. He - always he, omg, the original church had so many women leaders, there were deaconesses from the start - wouldn't have done any real research, looked into even the footnotes. I learned more about my faith in college history classes than some pastors. But I was blessed to have a youth pastor who was an ex-con and his situation made him really research our lessons beforehand.

I wish that I could rhyme like that. Not so much into rap, but impressed with the rhymes all the same. And to be fair, Bo's raps are fine. Much better than most other rap artists who rhyme two words that barely rhyme or are easy to rhyme and then smile or laugh as if they just did something impressive. Bo is actually impressive and doesn't throw in any stupid laugh or stretching of a word to emphasize the fact that he rhymed. I really hate it when rap artists do that in their raps. "Check my rhymes, I flow with the times, just like the wind upon wind chi~imes, heh." Makes me want to slap them when they do that.

Little rapping bit... But I do agree with that assured line though. Most people just kind of take it at face value and don't question it. And I spoke about this with my godfather because he was one of my teachers during confirmation that someone should be able to question religion not for the sake of denouncing it but just to be able to question it in itself. Because a belief isn't really a belief if you don't even bother to understand it at all.

I loved this reaction video! I am also religious but I enjoy, like you said, looking at things from a different perspective and trying to understand where people are coming from. If you are ever in the mood for some constructive conversation about religion you should look up the missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They’re just young people who leave their homes for 2 years to teach people about Jesus. Anyway, thanks for this reaction video, I hope you keep reacting to Bo’s songs. You should do some more from his special Inside.

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on a few songs by a band called Quiet Company. One of their albums is essentially a break up album with God. The lead singer had a crisis of faith and when his daughter was born he just thought "I can't lie to her and raise her to believe these things I'm not even sure I do" You & Me (and the boatman) Fear and Fallacy sitting in a tree Everything louder than everything else And especially The Easy Confidence I know I'm not a patreon so I don't expect anything right away but it'd be a nice break away from some of the other artists you cover on your channel and I do think you'd enjoy them lyrically at least. Hope you consider it BTW, loving all the insight into these songs hence my recommendation here. Keep up the great work dude. Much love from the UK

My family is very passively Christian in that in the past 3-5 generations it wasn't pushed or church oriented but many of us chose to go to church to learn for ourselves. Most of us ended up with a Bo-Like attitude or agnostic/atheist take on things.

At 13-17ish the hypocrisy of the majority of my church really began to set in and all these amazingly flawed but honest humans I knew were demonized while church going people who were worse were protected and celebrated and I couldn't reconcile it within myself or continue to follow

praying is not not to be an asking exercise its so post to be giving thanks or asking for guidance like "dear lord thank you for this week that i made it thought and for what you provided that help me make it" or " how can i do better on a test" than you hope he give you a sign and that you even notice the sign to begin with not asking to help you do better on a test which is why i left the church my self. I also left because what i was being told did not match what i saw and read my self.

I glad to see most people in the comment section are open minded. Normally I see anarchist say "thanks for being open to criticism" then go on to bash your beliefs or Christian's say "I understand why you would question" then go on to tell you why your a bad person. All we truly know is we don't know anything. There are no guarantees or proofs when it comes to the creation of all creation.

The point about the act of praying being selfish if it's for anything other than the big issues - That's the most humble shit ..I wish a lot more people would think about that. Like most people say they "love" God but act purely out of self preservation even if they dont recognise it themselves. Bo's flow tho O.O

Question how much would i need to pay on patron to have you do a whole album its instrumental only but its only 5 songs. Ive never seen anyone cover not one of their songs from any album theyve ever done. I’d love to see you do it.. especially since youre married. (It’s a love album) and it would get the band out to more people even tho they have been around for 20 years

Catholics and Protestants are both equally Christians. I suggest you read into the history of it more; it's pretty interesting. It seems wild to me that so many people don't understand their own religion in the context of the world and world history.

I grew up in a non-denominational church. Same church my whole life, surrounded by the same people. I didn’t know there were other religions until, like, second or third grade. And I remember it made me uncomfortable, which, looking back, the fact that I wasn’t inherently accepting of everyone makes me feel horrible. As I got older, I started to question things a lot more. I started having complicated questions about God and religion itself. I got to do a lot of thinking about that during Quarantine since church services weren’t open. So I wasn’t having everything forced down my throat every week. I decided I wouldn’t go to church anymore. I didn’t want to associate myself with a group of people who are largely hypocritical and hateful. Especially considering I’m a queer person. Can you be a Christian and be queer? Absolutely. And I still believe in God/an afterlife. I just don’t align with organized religion. I just kinda want to do my own thing. So I’d describe myself as Agnostic, I guess.
