I think my favorite part of this song is how it is just about how vapid these things are and can be, but rolls into the reminder that even the people making something so vapid and seemingly just for the aesthetics are still people who have suffered just as well as we have; maybe not to the same extent, the experience will never be the same, but we can still relate to that pain because it's a very natural pain.
@burgee66

I get something else from that part. I think he’s pointing out how nowadays even our most personal moments like grieving a dead parent are curated & not beyond pimping out for attention & likes.
@notednuance
@notednuance Жыл бұрын
@@burgee66 I get a bit of both, these things people are pimping out are not always what they seem or that the full context of this person that may appear shallow doesn't fit in the context of social media. The aspect ratio bumping out for full context of why she seeks this validation isn't clear as we format back down for social media. I think its both making fun of how shallow it can be, while acknowledging that there are still real people that may have real reasons for posting what they do... but whatever their reasons may be what is put into the world is still the curated version.

I really don't think that's the message. I think the point is that entire mom monologue was literally for the likes. If mom is dead, who is she talking to? Her followers, that's right.

@cheapershot yeah, but that's not a memorial. That is like people on Facebook saying, "Happy Birthday to my wonderful so-and-so. You make my life so much better blah blah blah. Nevermind that you don't have a Facebook account, and I'm totally not doing this so people pay attention to me."

I think one part that's super sad is when she's opening up and mentioning that its been a decade since her mom (and also her dad at some point) have passed away and the balloons hint that she is 27, so she was 17 when she lost at least one of them

It kinda breaks my heart that they didn’t really elaborate too much on this. I specifically wanted to watch these two react to this because they’ve been so good at catching on to stuff like this. Bo pulled a genius bait and switch in this one. The silly jabs at white women shouldn’t just be taken at face value. You should catch yourself thinking about how you laughed at the silly tropes and didn’t think about why and how some people cope with life. It’s ok to laugh, because it’s funny. But if you didn’t have an electrical shock or empathy in the middle, it’s a little bit worrying.

Don’t know if you picked up on the 1:1 aspect ratio that IG uses, then when it gets to the verse about the mom it opens up as if to show the real person behind the staged, perfect life depicted in the IG posts. Great reaction though fellas, keep it up!
@jameade
@jameade Жыл бұрын
That's the characteristic Bo moment. Coming out of the IG aspect ratio is a few moments it becomes "real", but quickly back to the posed, planned aesthetic.

To me this song is about how no matter how people’s lives appear from the outside we never really know what they’re going through on the inside. It also makes me think about why so many women seem to be SO into posting aesthetic bs. I actually think there’re a plethora of psychological and cultural reasons why it’s so popular, but I do think it’s often an attempt to blot out sadness/emptiness.
@paulquaife7974

The real skill in this is the production, the camera work, the ratio choice and how when the white women actually opens up the ratio changes, like she would never open up on Instagram, just in rl. The lighting choice and just how perfect every shot looks, all that edited perfectly together.... And then all of that is done by Bo in his house, he is insanely gifted

I swear to GOD Your channel is made for me EXACTLY!! I have been obsessed with Bo Burnham and TOOL for a much longer time than I want to admit. But I cannot tell You how much joy I get from people who would otherwise not come across those 2 artists/creators show their new reaction to stuff that has been getting me pumped for what seems like my whole life. And to top it all off You seem to find them to be as engrossing and genius and amazing as I do!! Thank You 🙏 I am so happy to see a couple of more people love what I love and be allowed to reexperience the 1st time watch/listen to these obsession worthy artists!!! It’s hard to explain how my heart/mind expanded exponentially upon hearing both TOOL and Bo, but it seems like You all are getting that right in front of my eyes!! Thank You again ✨💖✨

I have that plaid shirt. I forgot I had that shirt until my mom pointed at me: Oh hey it's your shirt! - when I showed her his special and I WAS WEARING IT without even realising it. *facepalm* Also I want to point out that this makes me cry every time he gets to that part about her having lost her mom, even though my mom is still around and very much a part of my life, but perhaps due to us always being so geographically distant or my not wanting to think about a time when she isn't here anymore, or whatever, I don't even know, in that moment, when the format of the screen is changing and we're seeing that woman's life behind the posts reveal itself, it always makes me feel so bad for her, always makes me feel all her pain all at once and it is so crushing. I have watched this and to this song I don't know how many times but even though I know what's coming, it always HURTS. This is the genius of Bo's work I think. You can see his punches coming a mile away sometimes and you still can't dodge them. xD Love you guys and your reactions. Thank you so much for this.

Subscribing because y’all are like one of the only reaction channels who reacted to the whole special. It’s such a fantastic comedy album/movie. It def stands out with some of the greatest comedy records all time for me. I was watching bo do his old videos in high school 15 years ago and this special is just absolutely perfect. As you said something about everyone not being the same, about white womens insta pages, but tbh most of the pages are almost identical. Bo really nailed this song/video

What I love about it and what I personally think the point of the song is that we all laugh at how basic the pictures are and that it’s just generic white wonen crap . But then it gets real for a min and we realize this isn’t just cliche pictures it’s an actual person we are laughing at who lost both parents and is doing the best she can to keep going . Without it we were just laughing at a basic white chick but after hearing her story we are now laughing at a women trying her best to cope . So be careful how you judge is the take away I got form it .

Everyone puts a lot into their hobbies. Busy career/mother types have the weird world of the internet. (Maybe they’re even a little bored with what’s going on currently). They put a lot of effort in to these apps to portray the things they love about their life for others to see. They also mix up their real lives from the internet world. Sometimes they put their real shit out there. Bo talks about it a ton in old interviews. The internet is really crazy and messed up, but it’s also beautiful. The screen widening during the real moment. Real view. He does this so much. The whole special. This is how great the video looks for my songs. The in between parts look especially shitty so you see how real life feels compared to the screen version. Just my opinion.

my favourite part is the thing with the mom because if you notice the framing expands. In my opinion that is because we are seeing the true person as we are seeing their life expanded upon and not the fake version that is set up by the framing of the rest of it

@notednuance has it right (username checks out). The point of the aspect ratio widening is this: as the white woman talks about something real, the aspect ratio changes from the standard Instagram ratio to wide screen. And as she goes back to talking about more surface-level things (great job, more money, big house, a man) it starts to shrink again. So yeah, talking about trauma is used to garner sympathy likes. You can share real pain on social media, but it’s not enough to share it just for the sake of saying you are hurting…. You have to share it as some sort of message about who you are and your brand if you want those likes, baby!
