Bussin' With The Boys

Bussin' With The Boys

2 жыл бұрын

Recorded: July 20, 2021 | Without this man, Will Compton might not be sitting on the bus. Legendary (and most decorated, sorry Vrabel) football coach Bo Pelini finally joins the boys on the bus.
To kick things off, Bo gives us his scouting report on Taylor when he was being recruited in high school. It turns out the boys were closer to being teammates than we might have thought.
Then, Will and Bo take a trip down memory lane from their time at Nebraska. They touch on everything from Will's dramatic recruitment process and Bo attempting to ban the team from Twitter, all the way to his fallout with Nebraska.
The stories shared in this pod are all-time, and If you're a true wolf, you will eat up every minute listening to one of men that shaped Comp into who he is today. Let's get after it boys.
-----
Get on the bus with NFL players Will Compton & Taylor Lewan! The Boys are letting you in on their hilarious, high-energy (and often heartfelt) conversations. Topics range from exclusive stories to active player perspectives to out-of-left-field hot takes on things you and your friends only discuss behind closed doors. Sometimes they chat with a guest, sometimes it's just the two of them, but it's always a good time when you're Bussin' With The Boys.
And yes, this is the podcast where Mike Vrabel said he'd cut his piece off for a Super Bowl.

@@Football__Junkie These are the teams that won NC's in the 90's. Are they all cursed? How are they now? Colorado, Georgia Tech, Washington, Miami, Alabama, Florida State, Nebraska, Penn State*, Florida, Michigan, and Tennessee. I added Penn State because they should have won a share in 94 though I think Nebraska would have won, but they sure as hell had a better chance of being the best than Michigan in 97. Yeah, pretty much all those teams either suck or are mediocre except of course Alabama who I guess is curse proof.

You must not have been watching the Huskers back then. Bo and his staff were very good recruiters and did a good job against teams with lesser talent. They would get blown out 76-3 against any team ranked in the Top 20, all while Bo was losing control of himself and his team on the sideline. Those games were embarrassing and there was no sign he was going to be able to fix it. His most recent stint at LSU indicates he still hasn't solved top offenses. I agree he has a great passion for the game though.

@@mmacify trust me I remember those painful blow outs but now we can't win more than 4 games and even a winning season sounds unrealistic. Bo Pelini could NOT get over the hump at Nebraska. Ranked teams usually kick us around. Bo’s last 3 seasons at Nebraska were an indication of two things: 1. We were struggling with teams we shouldn’t have been. And recruiting under Bo was slipping big time. Like John Cooper at OHIO STATE. Cooper couldn’t beat Michigan and win the conference championship. Cooper won consistently 8 or 9 games and more sometimes. But OHIO STATE fired him because he couldn’t get it done. Pelini had similar problems at Nebraska. Pelini 7 seasons at Nebraska and no conference championships to show for it. And to many embarrassing losses to boot. Firing Pelini was the right move. OHIO STATE hit a home run with the hiring of Jim Tressel. Nebraska’s hiring of Mike Riley was a disaster. Riley only made Pelini’s (starting to struggle) program way worse off. With Riley’s culture destroying approach. Now you have the facts of Nebraska’s disastrous last 9/10 years. And the reason Scott Frost is in a complete rebuild. And that doesn’t even include the Bill Callahan disaster at Nebraska before Pelini was hired. It took time for Nebraska to create this disaster. It will take time to rebuild!!

@@JW-28 Frosty is quite an enigma. He hasn't helped Nebraska one bit. His problem is Adrian....a puzzling anchor around Neb's Off neck. Martinez is good enough to excite coach's and bad enough to ruin a team's hope, morale and record. He makes stupid mistakes with no appreciation for the risks he takes throwing to the flat where a pick six can be a possibility. He's worthless as a QB. He'll kill a team...and Frosty couldn't and wouldn't wrap his head around. The o line is another inconsistent group that no one could trust especially if you got a complicated playbook. I would have had two backups ready after watching Martinez in year one.....by year two......Frosty should have had a sick feeling about his star QB...by years three and four, it's obvious "AM is not the guy to give the ball to". Any half way decent young coach could take NEB to 9-3 with the group they have.

I have a lot of respect for this man. I played left tackle for the smallest high school in the state of West Virginia in 2013 with 93 kids in the entire school. Luckily I had size, a few scouting camps & played in the OVAC but only a few real looks from Division 1 schools. Coach Pelini sent me a hand written letter which is literally one if the highlights of my life to this day. He really cares about his recruits.

That's cool to hear. All the haters that trash Bo don't understand the passion and care he has for the game and his players/team. @robertnoble6600

@@politicallyincorrect633 I disagree. Frank Solich was a better game day coach than Bo. Both Solich and Pelini had their struggles with recruiting. Frank because he followed a legend. Bo because the truth is. Bo hated recruiting. And Pelini also let the walk-on program die off slowly. And I would (years later) find out that under Bo the strength and conditioning program took a strange turn. Why would you mess with the gold standard of strength and conditioning. My understanding is the Nebraska women’s volleyball team benefited from these changes to the strength and conditioning program. Look at all the championships those women have. Mind blowing.

Absolutely agree! The transfer portal now is just an easy way out and just like u said it teaches kids to quit immediately when things don’t go there way or it’s too hard at first. But at the same time it’s like well good if you are gonna give up that easy then get the hell outa here! Just recently some of the guys from Nebraska entered the transfer portal because some other guys had came into their position to challenge them for the 1st string spot. It’s like bro you are really gonna give up that easy? Even if coach says u are gonna be 2nd string? You have to believe in yourself and work harder then the guy beside you. Going to a school is just running away and giving up. You think Tom Brady would just give up and transfer schools? NO! He would fight for his position and say that this is his team I’m the captain of it now!

Loved this podcast! I did agree with bo leaving he was just too nasty sometimes but I also appreciate what he did at Nebraska. It was amazing to hear from Bo in this setting and I think if more coaches would do something similar to this while they are a coach the fans would understand them much better. GBR

I think Will nailed it. I think Bo’s temper lead to the team crumbling in big games. I think he is a great football mind and a great coach but his temperament has hamstrung his career. Bo is right too though, Husker fans are nuts and put waaaay to much pressure on the kids. GBR thanks guys for the interview!

Really miss Bo. Never agreed with his firing and it still stings. Look at the NFL talent on his teams... flooded. Post-Bo, we get to hang our hat on Tanner Lee. Wow. And you wonder why the team has struggled in recent years.

He coached NFL talent but a lot of those players were recruited by Bill Callahan.

I was pissed when we fired Bo. Best coach we’ve had since Osborne and Nebby fans and media shoved him outta town.

@@FlickaNickk At the time... everyone knew....Bo couldn't tweek the Offense. His D's could beat inferior teams.......but not ranked teams. And that shows.....he wasn't great...just better than Callahan. When a team looks like it can't go farther, the coach goes. Bo met his ceiling...and that wasn't and shouldn't be where Neb accepts their future......right now, we Frosty not tweeking his O, and using a D that can't do it all.....but tries. Chinander is average, he's famous for letting teams score. Chinander doesn't have a blitz or even bother......and....against Minnesota's huge line loaded with six or seven lineman, Chinander didn't change his D to stop the obvious run......nor did he pressure a struggling QB to get turnovers??????

LSU fan here. I like Bo's first stint as DC in the mid 2000's much better. If we had kept it at that and not try to rehash past glory, we'd all be the better for it!
