Bo yelling at officials

Long before the days of review, officials were free to screw up calls and non-calls. When they did that to Bo, he got mad. Very mad. This a small collection of moments where Bo yelled at the refs for their stupidity. All of his complaints in this vid are legit except possibly the first clip against Texas A&M. I'm not sure about that one.

I'm the biggest Buckeye fan in the world but I always loved the intensity of Bo, hell of a coach ! More coaches today should show the passion and emotion he had for the game.

@mrdestiny2011 Bo had a great teacher. Bo referred to this man as his "football father". I'm talking about none other than Wayne Woodrow Hayes.

@@jamesbowen8960 I'll never forget what Bo said after Mich lost to OSU in "87" & everyone knew it was Earle Bruce's last game after he was fired the week before after losing to Iowa in Columbus: "I always mind losing to Ohio State but I didn't mind so much today." That tells u all u need to know about Bo, class act!

The ineptitude of the officials never ceases to amaze me, especially back in the day. What a bunch of buffoons. Officials are the most coddled, protected entity in all of sports, at every level. Every other entity in sports is held accountable - players, coaches, front office personnel, even fans. But god forbid anyone touch the officials. I've never understood it.

I didn't have the heart to post the phantom holding in the 1990 Rose Bowl, since it screwed Bo out of a win in his final game. The cameras caught very little of his yelling at the officials anyway. I don't own a copy of the 79 Rose Bowl for obvious reasons. The bad calls that have gone USC's way in that stadium is mind boggling.

My two kids go to MICHIGAN and I ask ALL their friends if they know how to spell “Schembechler”. Most miss a least one letter. I then tell them to walk by the athletic building named in his honor. One kid has many relatives (plus his parents) who attended MICHIGAN. He got the spelling wrong and begged me not to tell them.

I cannot believe that the officials would let that Illinois defender manhandle that Michigan running back, and then penalize Bo and Michigan 15 yards for yelling about it-- outrageous! That Michigan RB could have been seriously injured!

About Texas A&M, Bo said in his book he got mad at the ref for not explaining the penalty (thought it was holding) and then yelled at an official. The team got so mad at the calls this helped to motivate them to blow out Texas A&M. What about the holding call on the fake punt from the 1990 Rose Bowl, the clip from the highlight video was a bad angle. Also the phantom touchdown from the '79 Rose Bowl (official game dvd available), do you know if Bo reacted at all?

My all-time favorite was an Indiana game in the late 80s, might have been '88, where Michigan got flagged for holding and Bo went off and ended up getting flagged not once, but twice, for unsportsmanlike conduct. It turned what would have been a 2nd and 5 into a 2nd and 45. Of course, on the next play, Taylor hit either Calloway or McMurtry for a TD.

TV announcer Ara Parseghian said that the contact by the OSU player on the would-be Michigan receiver was pass interference. However, the contact occurred BEFORE the ball was released by the quarterback, so it could NOT have been pass interference. Illegal contact, perhaps. But definitely NOT pass interference, as that can happen ONLY when the ball is in the AIR.

I think on the last one, there was one player over the line before the ball crossed if you look again, on the far left side of the screen. May have been a good call there.

IDK if this behavior fits into the style of todays game. Replay has somewhat subdued these blown calls. What I do see is Bo's passion in defending the Game and especially his players is sorely missed. I wonder if Harbaugh or his predecessor's might have won a few more ballgames throwing these outright tantrums. If anything there might be a few less Seniors sitting out Bowl Games.

@WolverineHistorian No guarantees. My memory has gotten pretty hazy about that period. I do remember the '88 game being the one where McMurtry through the lamest of lame duck passes to Calloway (who had a DB that was 8" shorter than him beaten horribly; he even came back for the ball) and I'm pretty sure the that was the multi-call on Bo game, too.
