I think this is why SM puts higher standard on live vocal because their top models are BoA or TVXQ who have very balance skill of live performance. BoA is just amazing. She is singing alone through out the song by herself. It must be very hard to maintain stable vocal. Especially when she is doing concert. She is just amaaaazing

idc about what people say about SM artists but they are really amazing because of the training that they have to endure. people like BoA & TVXQ. seniors in the industry has paved the way for kpop to be globally known.

Lol you only mentioned the successful ones that made it in Japan. SM still only goes for pretty face above skills first

well japanese (Jpop) artists are as talented and didn't even have the same training as these SM artists. When I see Namie Amuro and Koda Kumi I can say that these girls (back in the days) were absolutely killing it on stage with no lip sync and dancing. Still Koda has lost her good voice and Namie retired... I'm glad to see that BoA had some struggle in Japan because it helped her improve too (even if it was painful, thus I can relate :/ it's hard to be perfect in everything during 1h but it s do-able if the playlist helps and stamina is improved)

What the hell, that live performance's vocals are fine for me.... but then again, the expectations placed on her were HUGE, and also, she was a literal child when he performed that showcase thing in Japan. I don't blame her in the slightest. Even many ADULTS in the music industry couldn't even reach her artist prowess at 13 years old. Also, oh, boy... in that ten year span, BoA was able to have a million-seller album twice, come back to Korea, focus on Japan, return once again to Korea... to tell a kid she wouldn't make it. That's cruel. If their words were actually true, she wouldn't have been performing until her Hurricane Venus era. I'm happy to see BoA talking about her stories, even those when she was the most vulnerable. She sacrificed her childhood and adolescence for us to enjoy her music, and hope it sets an example for other artists who start their careers when they are still children: They should not endure abuse, but they should be able to develop their personality and talent in a healthy way.

Totally agree with you! She was definitely out of breath for some parts but I think she was mostly referring to the high note where her voice cracked really badly but they didn't show it here.

She was definitely under pressure she wasn’t prepared for. But we can’t pretend that the performance was fine. She was barely doing the dance and she had to stop singing in the middle. And what’s worse is that her face shows disappointment, and you’re not supposed to telegraph to the audience that something is wrong.

Yeah I'm confused what about her showcase performance was considered a "failure." She was singing live and dancing at the same time....it seems really good to me.

BoA: "Lip-sync was the norm in Korean music at the time..." Me: "It's still the norm." But 14 year old BoA's live singing at her debut showcase sounded better than some idols today.

Yeah I have been following her from the very beginning and saw her grow :) I noticed how BoA and Tohoshinki performances really changed when they went to Japan. I think their journey and struggles there really helped them became such powerful and stable vocalists during lives. Kpop industry makes u train so much to just turn u into a lip syncing performer and a dancing machine. This is why I respect BoA and Tohoshinki/JYJ so much! They had to learn the hard way and can easily outshine, out dance and out-sing the other kpop idols without that lame lip syncing. Kpop focuses too much on trying to perfect the performance that they don’t think about letting the vocalists sing live majority of the time and just let them let loose on the choreography.

I think BoA and TVXQ (and KARA to a certain degree) are the only well-known Korean artists who actually tried to assimilate the foreign culture, instead of just selling in the country, which is the norm for the groups that debut in Japan nowadays. BoA and TVXQ are virtually bilingual, and there is a clear difference between their work in Korea and their work in Japan, at least in their earlier days. Nowadays, that difference is less clear since the sound is similar in both countries, although I miss the days when actual Japanese staff was involved in the production aspects of their discography. Some exceptions, however, could be 2PM's Masquerade (since the production team worked with acts like Gackt, as far as I remember), EXID's stint with M-Flo's Taku Takahashi... (I don't include acts like SNSD since... well, Scandinavian producers in their Japanese and Korean tracks, typical SMEnt these days)

I also like Rain because he doesn't pretend to sing on the mic when backing vocals are on, focusing on his choreography/adlibs instead. A real one

@@domingadoflaminga3961 very true, I rmb back then people were surprised KARA was such a hit in Japan but if you look close you noticed they also followed the path of BoA and TVXQ they release different discography in Japan and in Korea, not just lame release a japanese ver of a korean song.

Somebody should have told her that shows in Japan require strict live vocals, maybe they could have saved her from the embarrassment that way and let her train more for when she feels ready. You know, agents are supposed to give advice and guide artists...

It was in early 2000s and lipsync was common in their industry at that time. But it's differrent now.
