My father was a surviving passenger on that flight. I was an informant for the 2002 BBC History Series programme Desert Rescue as I’ve heard about his experience all my life and have newspaper cuttings from that time. Thought the making of the programme I was in touch with the co-pilot’s widow - Olsen Haslam, the steward - Len Smee and the ‘baby’ - Richard Gurney, all of whom appear in the programme. My father appears in still photographs of the landing site in the programme, and I have a VCR of the full programme which was sent to me by the BBC after the making of it. My Dad used to tell us of his experience as a bedtime story, which now seems quite a gruesome tale for a small child!

It would be good to see the whole documentary again. I do remember seeing it about 10 years ago.

The Hermes was developed from the Hastings. Was the Hastings really developed from the Halifax bomber? I don't see any similarity.

Shared wing designs, changed fuselage. The complete Halifax at Elvington uses Hastings wings.
