You appear to really have a fun time putting this together. I wonder if you'd have as much fun simply using a Vertical Wall Sweep? A new category can be created in the Wall Object Styles and assigned to the sweep for controlling visibility. Array the sweep along the wall @ your desired spacing. Now add & move windows & doors; modify levels associated w/ that wall, change the roof pitch of the wall attached to that roof, etc. And the fun continues. Thanks for bringing us so much joy in Revit.

I'm using the board and batten made from a curtain wall and just changing the profile to allow for windows and doors. both methods have pros and cons... i never figured it'd be this many steps to board and batten siding in revit.... i figured that would be a standard by now.

I think the window trim is better adjusted in the window family by editing the window property. This way it will change all the windows if needed.
@miketaylor-fantastic3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Window trim in the window family flexes with the window. This video just shows a different way to apply battens and window trim.
@rik-fern10 ай бұрын
Great video! I had an issue connecting the trim around the window frame. I'm getting prompted that I can't align the battens at each corner of the trim. and that there are constraints. So the batten pieces aren't flush at each corner. I've tried to remove the constraint but that doesn't help either. Do you have any suggestions for remedying this issue?

I ask a $10 question and you give me $1000 answer. And you give the answer super fast!!! It is awesome how you can create a family that aligns with the wall. This method will be very useful for more than just adding batten boards or window trim to walls. Thank you so much for this super awesome video! You make it look easy but I know there is a lot of effort in making quality videos. You are by far my favorite BIM Manager 😁 I am going to push my luck... and ask another question. I am laying out a complex gable & hip roof. I get the basic footprint, overhangs, slopes and ridge lines as close to right as possible. But then when I make minor adjustments to roof extensions/overhangs, the ridge lines move. There is always tweaks to be made. Short question long.... "Is there a way to lock down 'ridge lines' so that they don't move when using 'EDIT FOOTPRINT' command? It makes me want to scream 😫
@miketaylor-fantastic4 жыл бұрын
@Ken B: Unfortunately, you can't LOCK the ridgeline when working on an overall roof of the building. Yet, if you make each sloped surface a different roof... you can then lock the ridge location. It's not best practice to break the roof into many different parts, but you can. We all deal with the ridges moving when we 'tweak' the roof. Been there, done that! :/

I really enjoyed and was able to use your Board & Batten video on a recent project. Now that I have created the family and have it loaded into my project, how do I change its parameters to wood so it renders like wood rather than a grey object?
@miketaylor-fantastic3 жыл бұрын
IN the family you need to select the geometry and assign a Material to it.

can you think a better way to model Yellow truncated dome tack tile on the floor? I was thining similar approach, curtain wall flat on the ground. but can not figur to make circular truncated dome individually on grid intersection ??? current approach is 2 ft x 1/2in rail, so it can detact topo. how to illustrate the circular truncated bump dome on the rail?
@miketaylor-fantastic2 жыл бұрын
If I follow your question properly: I think I would represent the tactile domes on the floor with a pattern (easier to deal with in plan views) and then make a 'bump map' in my Material for any renderings.
@harutanaka36472 жыл бұрын
@@miketaylor-fantastic need to import circular grid pattern from autocad to revit. then create bump map deal. bump map deal will not shown shaded view, only shown on render view

Very informative video. Thank you for explaining this. I have one issue: I can't place the batten in Elevation view, only in 3D view. Any idea where I got turned around? I've watched the video multiple times and don't see what I missed. Revit LT2020
@miketaylor-fantastic4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. My thoughts: In elevation, make sure up at the top you select 'Place on Face' and select the face of the wall, before you select the Pick Lines tool. My guess is that in elevation you are somehow trying to place them on a workplane not aligned with the view. So try what I suggested and see if you can place them in the true elevation view.

How would you make the wraps in the walls in a seccion ? at the top and at the base .. greetings from Argentina
@miketaylor-fantastic4 жыл бұрын
Hiii TheCheo89! OK... as you have probably found, the WRAP feature only works in PLAN orientation. Typically materials don't wrap at the TOP of a wall, you can put a cap on the wall if it is a parapet. Nor does material typically wrap at the top of a door/window. A header will be at the top. And a sloped sill (wood/stone/brick, etc.) will be at the bottom. These can all be added as separate families (or a sweep for the wall cap). Does this help?
@TheCheo894 жыл бұрын
@@miketaylor-fantastic Ok, thank you so much!!! That was a big question I had regarding the modification of walls. but you could make a video about how to use the tools to modify the structure of the wall vertically, such as modifying region, merging region, because I tried to wrap with the materials from outside the core to the core materials and I could not do it .. Again, thank you very much.
@miketaylor-fantastic4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I can show a video about Modify Region and Merge Region in the section view of a wall. Those are mostly used for continuous materials for the full length of a wall. They are locked at specific heights also, so they don't really work for doors/windows. I personally much prefer using sweeps to modify the walls, because I have much more control.. just sayin'. ;)

Please help. the batten in not connecting to my entire line, i made sure it was the whole length when i edited the family, but it is only copying at 4' and i cannot edit the length in my work plane
@miketaylor-fantastic4 жыл бұрын
Hang in there Mackensie... we can solve this. ;) Ok. Open the batten family for editing. In a Line-Based family.. you need to connect your geometry (batten) to the Reference Plane in the family. So, in the family, in the Ref Level view.. you will see the dimension from the insertion point over to the Reference Plane (4'-0") Your batten geometry (created when in the Left or Right view) needs to connect (align and lock) to the Reference Plane. You can pull it back and away about a foot or so, then use Align to get it to extend to the Ref Plane, then LOCK it there by clicking on the little lock that appears right after you use the Align tool. Save and insert it back into your project. It should work fine when you select a line on your model using Pick Lines. I hope this helps. Watch the video again to see me do these things listed above. Blessings!

Again, a great explanation of how to navigate REVIT so that something useful can be done. We appreciate how you seem to get to a real world application of REVIT, way beyond the basics that most others just provide. Still...if AutoDesk's 'Left-Hand' (let's call it AutoCAD) would talk to its 'Right Hand' (let's call it REVIT), they would incorporate some very productive, time-saving FLOW into both...& make it way easier to cross-over between platforms. Yeah....the 'soap-box' attacks me again. Please forgive. It's AutoDesk that needs to do some improving. Until then, thanks for the great insight.

Hi Giorgi. Yes.. you can make this pattern on your building either using wall REVEALS or by using vertically place wall SWEEPS. It seems a little cumbersome to do it that way.. but it totally works.
