This is actually an excellent game that does not get to my table enough. I'm still trying to achieve the ultimate victory: win without controlling any countries.

This game (accidentally?) does a really good job teaching the negative and exploitative mechanisms of capitalists doing imperialism.

Would love to get your perspective on the differences between this version and Imperial 2030 , which has a more contemporary, global setting. The theme of 2030 appeals to me more, but sometimes reimplementations turn out a little less good than the original. Also, if you like the idea that none of the armies on the board belong to a particular player, but rather players decide over the course of the game which they want to control and victory goes to whoever can direct a war in their favor from the shadows, check out "A War of Whispers", the more streamlined, middleweight take on a Game-of-Thrones-as-a-board-game concept.

What a familiar looking map lol. It's not *exactly* the same as the Diplomacy map, but it sure is close.

I might use a custom map because this one bothers me, but that might be a sign I'm too much of a history enthusiast. Gameplay looks good though.

Reminds me of a favorite of mine, Tzolkin. That game is always going to be my favorite worker placement game because you get to crank a big gear. More games should let you crank a big gear.

Lol loved the video. For some reason it made me crack a smile when he mixed up Germany and Russia

Imperial is so fun! A great game that teaches core fundamentals of shareholding that you can translate to 18xx. Day 70 of asking ProZD to review 1830: Railways and Robber Barons!

As much as I love the inherent funness and pure random chance of cards and dice, this actually sounds really interesting and fun, also you mixing up Russia and Germany bothered me so much You might've done this one already since you've got a ton of videos in this series but have you reviewed 3 dragon ante? It's a card game from D&D that they made IRL

Mac Gerts is a fantastic designer (he also designed Concordia). Imperial is a tried and true German-style board game. Highly-interactive, strategically deep, low rules overhead, and waaaay more thematic than its drape exterior would have you believe. Imperial and Imperial 2030 are both knockouts.

If you want to be reductive, every game is just "X but with extra steps." Chess is just checkers with extra steps. Gloomhaven is just Heroquest with extra steps. American football is just tag with extra steps.

@@philipkelly7369 when the extra steps ruin what made the original good, it seems informative to point that out. You seem upset someone hates your favorite game.

Have you ever played the old version of History of the world (late 90's, early 2000's, might've been a 2nd edition), loved it as a kid, tried to find a copy but there's a new way oversimplified version that just looks like trash. It's map based game, it's split into 7 epochs (in the good version) and in each epoch every player plays as a different civilisation (i.e Egypt, the Minoans, Sumerians and more in epoch 1, Germans, British and Spanish in epoch 7 with different starting points, troop numbers and bodies of water they can navigate) and get points based on having a presence in a region, being the majority in that region or being the only player in that region, as well as extra points for cities, capitals and monuments with there being a score counter around the board. The leading player gets a token that adds to their end score after the game and players blindly pick their next civilisation card in ascending order from last place and they can give their card away to a player of their choice.

This and the 2030 version is one of the best boardgames I have ever played. Sooooo cynical... In 2030 when I gained control of Brazil who was at war with Russia (I also controlled), I basically let the war carry on because it was great for business. Lowering that overhead.

The game is cool, but the last time I played it with 6 players, it was just going in circles and there was no real progress. So it’s probably better with around 4-5 players. Otherwise it’s worth a look, especially withe the lack of RNG!
