Great review as always. How long is "a little long" for your gaming group and for this game in particular? I'm usually feeling like 90-120 is the sweet spot with medium weight 4 player games. I would assume that more often than not, the player knows what their turn will be before it starts, and as such can execute it rather quickly.

Great question. Length for me isn't about length, but about length vs the type of game. We found this ran 2-2.5 hours, when it feels like the kind of game that should be 1.5-2.

Great review! You say this is a prototype? The board and other elements look very different from what is on BGG (from Essen SPIEL 2019, that also says coming to KS April 6th). Is this even the same game? Just a little confused.

Very much a prototype and definitely different than the final version :)

How would you advice me to choose between this one, Oros and Legend Academy, if I’m looking for engine and combos with special abilities, like UC, Everdell, Spirit Island, Res Arcana? And I agree with you regarding Dwellings now, even though I wanted to love it 😅 (And too many cards has VP-abilities, which I only like end game 😬).

I am really struggling on this one. The game looks great and mixes things that me and my game group totally enjoy - engine building and some form of race/interaction. But Grey Fox Games have some really bad reputation that they need to clear. A friend of mine experienced a ton of trouble with Tsukuyumi and I have seen the final product of that game - the component quality for an expensive game with minis is far below sub-par. Obviously, mistakes were made on many levels. So really not sure how to go about this game and its producer ....

Yep, Grey Fox has had issues, but most people actually don't have any issues....that said, you tend to only hear from those with problems by the very nature of it.

Not to discount your bad experience, never a good thing to hear about. That said and to what Alex said, I've only had good experiences with Grey Fox, though I only backed both Deceptions and City of Gears.

Pirates, Angels & Demons, Asymmetric player powers, Engine building totally had me interested, this game sounds made for me. When I played it though there was just too many things that could affect the entire game and how much someone can win based on locations they spawn or start at the beginning of the game. I had fun, but I don't like that the starting positions of the game can completely determine the entire game. I mean I am sure they balanced it more since I got to try it, but it wasn't that long ago and the game launching today, I don't think there is enough time to balance the game better. And that is balance based on placement, not even to do with the asymmetric factions. This video was fantastic!

When you say completely determine the game, do you mean the winner is pretty much decided? Or do you more mean there's an obvious strategy that there's no point in doing something else?
@successfulgeek3 жыл бұрын
@@kumanight The game we played, we figured out at the end, if a player had started in a certain position(which anyone can choose at the start) and did a single action, they would have run away with the win with nothing anyone could have done. I did just load up the mod and almost everything has changed though so I am going to get a game in again next week and see how much has changed and if it feels more balanced.

Your comment has me worried. I am currently contemplating backing the game, but things like that and the fact that it comes from a company that has had major issues in the past is stopping me to fully commit.
@BoardGameCo3 жыл бұрын
Let me know how it goes next...but ya, your comment is why I make no guarantees on balance. To be clear...we haven't had issues....but it's wild enough in what it's doing that I can see it being an issue.

@SuccessfulGeek do you have an update for us? Do you think there is a way to house-rule the set-up to avoid what you mentioned? I really want to back this game, but this aspect of it is really worrisome. (combined with the notion that a player could spend time and effort trying to get to a certain point on the board, only to have another player snatch it up).

How long does the game take for you? Too long for you is very subjective and not informative. If it's 30 min per player as the box says then that would be my sweetspot. I looked into the comments and there is a lot of comments regarding the handling of Tsukuyumi and Gray Fox Games has a very bad reputation. I don't think you mentioned this in your video? You absolutely should have.

@@BoardGameCo I do agree that games can be too long for what they are, and that is useful information. In my game group we enjoy 3h games. And we often prefer to play with 4 players for that meatier experience. It's good to get both your subjective opinion as well as the facts.
