I'd say that, of course in the context of games, a cube (or other multi-faceted shape) is a die if at any point during gameplay there is a clear and distinct definition and knowledge of: 1. Whether it's in play (relevant for the game state) or not. 2. Which sides/facets is/are up/on/active/relevant and impacts the game state (must be >1 when in play), which aren't (must be >1), and how it's determined. 3. What each side/facet signifies and means for the game state. 4. There are more than 2 different (for the above previous criteria) sides/facets. The only case I'm a bit iffy on is the last one, where I exclude the supposed 2D dice. Technically there's no difference beside the number of different sides when you go to more than 2. But practically this would not only make coins be dice (which, technically may be true they're a type of, but meh), but also any double-sided tokens would be dice (which, fair if you think coins are fair, since there's no difference). While not wrong, it would make the definition wide enough to be useless and meaningless. There are technical contexts in which that would still make it a good definition, but not so much for boardgames. There's no need for a game term which is useless when describing games, practicality matters Where the rollability (is that a word?) of the shapes matters is not on whether the shapes are or aren't dice, but on whether the game with them is a dice game, rather than just a game that has dice in the component list. A game with dice that you don't roll still has dice (it's absolutely fine and correct to call them dice in the manual and in play, and in reviews) but it's not a dice game (no one who asks for a dice game, or talks about general aspects of dice games, would consider such a game relevant to the discussion).

I would say a cube is a die whenever all its faces are not identical, because then it has the capability to be rolled to generate a random outcome. I don't think it needs to be rolled to be a die, though, just like a bicycle doesn't need to be ridden to be a bicycle! :)
@BoardGamingRamblingsАй бұрын
But how do you know if it's a bicycle, if it's standing still? It could be a very strange chair?

Apart from the thing already mentioned (dice do not necessarily have to be cube-shaped - they can have many different numbers of faces), another big difference between dice and generic cubes is that dice usually have their corners rounded so that they roll better. Cubes (that are not intended to be rolled) will usually have their corners left as exact 90-degree angles.

just commenting to say that _technically_ the cubes in BtS are briefly considered dices, as there is that card you get that lets you roll one to get a different result, so over the course of enough games, each cube of each colour will have been a die at some point in its existence :D

Thanks for the comparison, I enjoyed your video. I was close to auto-buy this in Essen, but more and more negatives came up in multiple videos that make me think, although the great main-part with the tech tree. Negatives others mentioned: a) tokens on wooden things, as you also mentioned. b) Map tiles are almost similar and it does not lead to much interaction. Just discover a new one and its probably close to the one where you could also go. No need to fight with one opponent (or beat him in a race to the tile) c) The player powers are imbalanced: e.g The Person who can take the population directly from the inactive side is rather overpowered, whereas e.g. the person who can fortify easily has a rather weak power. How would you rate "negatives" b) and c) from your perspective? Are these points you also recognized? Thanks

Don't move pawns with a two finger pinch. Use a four finger claw grip (like a mechanical claw). No chits ever fall off. Solved. :)

I think the game changes look pretty good, especially the level 4 techs being known from the start. The production does look a bit dodgy though (although did look better in your photos from the side than it did in the play throughs from JonGetsGames and slickerdrips).

Only played "The Sun" once. I liked it, but I wasn't a fan of the area majority stuff, or the absolutely enormous board that was far too difficult to read. The theme/art didn't pull my friends in either. Looks like I might be trading up for "Horizon" as it seems a much better fit, but the components seem not great. Teeny tiny cardboard discs are my least favourite things in all of board games. They need an upgrade for sure!

@@david6294There is Nothing wrong with the tokens and pawns. At all. I think there's some kind of group psychosis going on at this point. They are much better than the dice from the original. The only way they are worse is if playing during an earthquake or if one is stupidly trying to move them my grabbing them with a two finger pinch. With a claw grip, they are fine.
