Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience.
Another note: The Navy did not ask me to provide a link to their website (or do anything for that matter), but I’m going to provide a link because I want smart people to become submariners. The US Navy continues to provide stability and security in ways no other organization on earth does. There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:
The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meed who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch. www.navy.com/

Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I'd also like to thank the US Navy Public Affairs Officers who helped coordinate this. After clearing the video for OPSEC, they did not limit my creativity in anyway whatsoever. I decided to make a video about the Command Structure on the submarine so we had a better foundation moving forward in the Submarine Deep Dive. This video is just the beginning! I have some incredible things to show you as a part of the deep dive. Please consider subscribing for those. I'm most grateful to people who go the extra mile and support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. It's a super big deal because it brings stability to Smarter Every Day in ways that's hard to describe. In this case, I had to buy a plane ticket to the Arctic on relatively short notice. If you'd like to become a Patron, I'd greatly appreciate it. The link is here: www.patreon.com/smartereveryday

Thank you for the videos. I am an ex-submariner, attached to the very first Los Angeles class submarine, SSN688 USS Los Angeles based out of Pearl Harbor. I left the Navy around 2000. I can show my kids your videos so they get a look at what my world was like 20 years ago. I was at first a “Radioman” in the Navigation unit, but they merged all of Nav and Radio jobs into one rate called Electronics Tech. I remember having a flooding event while at sea. I remember the best food in the US military. I remember popping the hatch in the middle of 3 Hawaiian Islands for a “Swimming Call”. I remember standing deck watch at port in Pearl thinking about all the American and Japanese who lost their lives there. It was an amazing time of my life. Keep up what you’re doing. You are truly making our youth smarter everyday. 👍👍

as the parent of two young men in the Navy it is greatly appreciated when we can get a greater understanding of what our men and women in uniform are getting themselves into. One of my Sons is at Naval nuclear school right now to learn how to operate a reactor on a sub, so this helps me understand what his life is going to be like when he is away and unable to share with those who worry about them.

My oldest son was a Nuke Machinist Mate 1st class on two subs, a SSN and a SSBN. I was in Intelligence, IS2nd class, our second son was a DCman on a surface ship and dad was in anti-submarine warfare. So, yeah , we’re a Navy family.

Your son is training to be what I was, more than half a century ago - a submarine nuclear reactor operator. Even today I try to keep up through these vids with how the modern generation is working out. Obliviously, some of the systems and missions have changed over the years, but the people part remains the same and is well represented in this video. Your son will be challenged, but assuming he gets though nuke school, sub school and earns his dolphins aboard his first boat, he (and you!) will have the satisfaction of knowing he is the 'best of the best' in service to his country. He will also have the self-confidence to handle anything he faces in the civilian world, once he leaves the Navy. Good job, mom, on raising a man that can hack it!

Was once on a US Navy attack sub at NAS Norfolk for about an hour or so during a JEWSOC (Joint Electronic Warfare Special Operations Conference......or at least I think that's what "JEWSOC" stood for...been a long time) back in about 1994 when I flew the EC-130H Compass Call. Two things impressed me: 1 - How cramped everything inside was and 2 - how cramped everything inside was. I mean before you go inside you're thinking "this is a sub, everything is going to be tight and cramped" and then you get inside and you're just blown away how tiiiiiiight every space was. Biggest open space was the officers' mess. I kid you not it was probably 6' x 8', maaaaybe 6' x 10'. That's it. God bless our sailors who work to keep us free.

Think about what he's doing here, he's interacting with dozens of people and moving throughout multiple levels and rooms within a nuclear submarine. There's all sorts of OPSEC issues involved with this. One of the submariners could easily slip up and say something they weren't supposed to, or Destin could film something he wasn't supposed to, or he could be in the vicinity of someone talking about something that they don't want us to hear. She is really the second line of defense for all of this, and the individual OPSEC training that each submariner has taken would be the first line of defense. By the time the Navy gets a hold of the video to review it for OPSEC, there should be little to nothing that they have to cut out before the video is released. All of these layers eliminates or dramatically reduces the potential for human error.
@olaruud9366
@olaruud9366 3 жыл бұрын
Probably helps in other ways than what are obvious. I bet submariners are naturally skeptical of strangers roaming around their top secret boat, the presense of someone that has full control of what is within opsec limits will assure the crew that its ok to show and tell stuff without having to double check constantly.

As so many have said, Thank you for sharing some insight into life on a boat! I served for 4 years on Daniel Webster 626 Gold and to this day it is one of the smartest and proudest things of my life. I truly admired everyone I shared time with on and off the boat! It is a brotherhood you never quite understand until there is some time to reflect and grasp what is you did. This series does a great service to the men, and now, women who give up so much to do this job! I immediately sent a link to my in-laws as their grandson embarks into his life in the Navy and onto a sub. One quick observation..it seems the navy or this crew now adopted the term "ship" rather than as all formers bubble heads will call it..a boat! For me it was strange to hear.

As a GA pilot with acrophobia before I flew (which helped quite a bit) being in the tight quarters I know a sub has, would take a claustrophobic individual some doing to get used to! Our great respect and thanks for their service down below! Just being under the ice could be quite an ordeal but it's astonishing how a sub can burst up through the ice! I'm sure the crew is so busy, that they have little time to be concerned with tight quarters, but I would still think it would take some mental adjustments! I wondered how the sub knows where the ice is the thinnest so they COULD break through it, but today, there are sensors on EVERYTHING so I'm sure they know! We thank the crew of the sub for their service and thank you for your video!
@robertparker9896
@robertparker9896 2 ай бұрын
Just as a sub has a fathometer (a type of downward-sensing sonar) to measure depth under the keel, they also have upward sensing sonar to sense the depth of ice below the sea surface, and that system is to find 'leads' or polynas' (areas of thinner ice pack) that can be surfaced through. - One-time nuclear submariner here who has BTDT. BTW, I'd always wanted to fly, and much later in life soloed and earned my private pilot's license. I found the learning process for that to be akin to getting qualified in submarines!

@@robertparker9896 As an acrophobic, and aviation pilot, I never had a problem at all looking down, which you do a lot while VFR flying, but the mind can fool you sometimes, I went up in a glider with a friend and was nervous the whole time, not trusting those warm air thermals and wishing for an engine in the glider! I have been a "water-baby" since my earliest years and enjoy all instances of being in the water and lived right by the ocean for many years. I really enjoyed SCUBA diving and dived in Monterey Bay, CA area a lot. BUT, it's silly I know, but I was afraid to go out off shore very far because I KNEW about the drop-off into the Monterey Trench and I can't explain it, but I was nervous to get out over that while in the water! I guess James Cameron will never invite me to go to the depths in his submersible.

@@robertparker9896 Thanks for that info, Robert, I read that the Arctic ice can be 15' thick! Seems like that would be difficult to break through for the sub! Do they get a running speed and crash into it, or would that wreck the part of the sub that breaks through, I guess its called the "sail" -- must be quite strong! And is it more difficult to keep the sub warm at 30 below zero than at however cold the ocean is where you travel; I suppose there is sensor on the outside of the sub somewhere telling you what the water temp is -- correct? I was expecting to see close quarters but there is a bit more room than I expected in some areas! Thanks for your input.

@@mjleger4555 Pre-surface procedure under ice is to 'map' out depth of ice pack above and find a region larger than the boat itself that is < 5 or 6 feet thick, then 'hover' under that spot 20 feet or so and blow all main ballast tanks. the 'sail is built strong enough to take the hit. Then the crew breaks out ice axes, saws, and snow shovels to dig their way out of the boat! Nuke plant means plenty of A/C to handle either warm or cold water surroundings.

I served on 2 ballistic missile submarines. We gave occasional tours. We kept our gauges covered while in port so no parameters were viewed. Also NOBODY not crew was allowed into or past the reactor compartment. Typically nobody that is not on the access list is allowed aboard so tours have to be set up. No guest is ever not escorted the entire tour of the boat. This video blurred some things and the entire film was obviously reviewed by Gov't personnel before release. We were not allowed to take photos without permission and none in engineering spaces

I love the fact that the US military has understood the impacts of youtube and creators enough to actually involve and invite Destin. Sure you could argue this is propaganda like, and that's probably what motivated the Navy, but still what a cool video/experience. Now if only we could get our politicians to understand the internet as well as the military does.
@bbies1973
@bbies1973 3 жыл бұрын
You might be surprised. A year ago, Destin published a video about the future of warfare and Multi-Domain Operations. In it, he has an interview with Gen. Brown, who mentions social media (propaganda, although he doesn't use that word) as a part of the "human domain".

Military created the internet, so it stands to reason they understand it. Also tens of thousands in their ranks of young people, are in the Military and young people are the lifeblood of the military. It's in their best interests to understand the internet if they did not it would eat them alive.
