I also didn't have a very good experience in boarding school, I remember i went when i was 9 left when i was 18. My experience as a 9 was very tough i remember crying the whole year cause i kept believing my parents will remove me from the hell that I was left in. But they were only lying to me. I wasn't even able to read properly cause i was in constant fear I wasn't psychologically prepared to deal with the cold with mean kids being beaten 24/7 for the slightest mistake. To make matters worse your parents don't even understand what your going thru because even for them they were not emotionally attuned to me as a child. To make matters worse i was made to repeat and i was made to do so in the same school it was seriously humiliating to be taken thru that. Fast forward when i started dating and after doing some self work, i came to realize that i deep issues with abandonment trauma i am convinced it came from feeling abandoned when i was left in boarding school, it was very painful and bado huwa naskia pain nikikumbuka hio time i feel the abandonment trauma i experienced as a child cause i kept thinking my parents will remove me from that school but that was not the case. Though naheal pole pole. So unaimagine unfail kwa class your parent haezi elewa unashindwa kuadopt shule and its not cause you are dumb but its fear its feeling abandoned. I dont think ntapeleka mtoi wangu boarding unless aseme mwenye. Most parents abandon their kids there cause they don't want to parent their kids its too much of a struggle for them. So yeah!!

Ghai! The trauma! I feel like jumping into this conversation... how were the basic amenities? I started wearing glasses in class 7 because we didn't have electricity at the time. We used to study late in the night with pressure lamps. Oh, and the lack of privacy in the bathrooms and dorms. There is too much to unpack, I hope there will be a petition to close down all these schools, they do not serve children at all.

Awww Margie...i love your topics. On this one I relate to 90% of all of your experiences. I too was taken to a boarding school in nyanza at class 5. My mum was a single mum and she had a job that required travel and so it made sense for her to have my sister and I in boarding...the shocks we got in that school....after class 8 my mum preffered to have us back to Nairobi schools due to trauma from that boarding school.

Sad. I have just shed a tear when Jocyline sang the song about Nyuso zetu yet the kids looked dead. That life was a torture

Funny thing, in primary school we harvested beans. I kinda liked it because it got us away from the class where we were forever in trouble and always beaten. In Class 8 I had eczema everywhere including my eyelids. I later learnt that extreme stress is my trigger for eczema.

i was forced to go to boarding in class 4 ... a school where corporal punishment was the norm , long story short i still have an injured knee 10 years later , my parents paying hospital bills which i think they could have avoided when they knew i was injured. not forgetting the trauma. yooooh

Gai, mimi i went to boarding school at 14. I hated the preps , sleep deprivation made me odozo (always sleeping) i dny know why kenyan schools do that. The diet was somehow ok. I kind of enjoyed high school apart from my mathes teacher who doubled as class teacher we hated each other.maybe because i was popular i dnt know.

Looking back at all the nasty experiences that were considered ‘normal’ that was Trauma that most of us are healing decades later. I hope the Kenya schools especially boarding schools are doing better now, otherwise we need to make change.

Went to a mixed boarding high school and years later I met a former female classmate. Talking about our experiences is like we were in two different schools (her dad was the former deputy head & almost everyone had to extract revenge from her😢)
