I believe that was based on life and actually pretty common. I remember James Cagney had to speak Yiddish in a movie and coaches were hired. Turns out he didn't need them. He spoke Yiddish from growing up with Jewish friends in NYC. Irish, Italian, and Jewish kids grew up playing together in NYC and just picked up each other's languages.

Jewish Meyer Lansky and Italian Lucky Luciano became friends when they were children - this is in real life. Irish James Cagney spoke Yiddish so well he shocked the Jewish studio heads.. Carney grew up speaking Yiddish with his Jewish friends in NYC. Sure, there was division. There also wasn't.

A cop and a soldier aren't the same thing, the only thing in common is both carry a gun as part of their daily routine. I find being an actual soldier in war(not peacetime) is honorable.
