It was sad for me too. But I think overall it was good for the show. There wasn't a lot more they could do for him in terms of plot. If he just escaped and met up with them there would be no reason for him to be in season 5. Made more sense to have this heartbreaking resolution.

The last minutes of this episode are some of the greatest minutes in TV history I've seen... And I've seen so much already! Something so beautiful and same time so sad and heartbreaking... I liked his character but I think the writers fucked up when they had his character say that he would kill the mother, sisters, and the other brother (the dentist) to get the D'Alessio brothers to poke their heads up. Everyone he killed throughout the series were involved in some type of criminal activity except the accidental shooting of Maybelle at the end of Season 4, but they should have left the part about killing the mother, daughters, and the civilian son because it doesn't fit his character throughout the rest of the show.. I would've liked to see him blow the doctor's head off so Chalky could've sent his ass back to Libya lol.

It was such a powerful ending for me. I was genuinely devastated when Richard died. I think the end scene was meant to show a release for him. When it showed him with a normal face he looked happy, it was if he was finally at peace. You could tell that he wasn't happy with his existence and that he was just a shell of a men, hollowed out by the violence and bloodshed that he had to commit to keep his friends and family safe. He was a murderer like the rest of them but you couldn't help but feel sorry for him. Even though he was dead he knew he would never have to take another person's life again.

I think Richard was such an enigma, it would've been perfect to leave his fate up for interpretation, a mystery. Maybe just his glasses and a patch of blood left on the beach. With all he went through, and all the deaths we see throughout, it was a bit predictable having him bite the bullet too. It would keep people interested, guessing what could've happened. Shouldn't of killed him.
@adams783910 жыл бұрын

In my opinion, the whole point of Richard's character was to show a person who had been so badly scarred (both physically and mentally) that nothing could ever truly heal him. He tried to find a sense of purpose, a place to belong, people to fight for and all that but it was never going to be enough to make him truly whole and happy again. I was worried in season 3 when it looked as if the producers were forcing a happy ending for him, but that didnt happen and now I actually feel good. Not because I wanted the guy to die (he was my favorite character) but because I like it that the show runners didn't go the "teddy bear" route and have him reach a happy place. The guy was too far gone, and a death within the series was the only realistic and right way to go IMO. Great fucking character, though, and one reason I will always remember this show no matter how long I live.
@TotoTom56710 жыл бұрын
Good points, I also think him just walking away would've been too "happy ending" for him, but his fate being left a mystery, after getting shot, would've been a far more suitable ending for such a mysterious character. Like the Sopranos ending, I think it would've kept people guessing, talking about it. I thought about how I would've loved the last scene to go, as his wife (forget her name) is walking up to him in the dream, and it cuts back to him on the pier, I think it should cut back to him again and he has just vanished, maybe a patch of blood and the glasses left there. Then maybe cut to the train in reality, where he was sitting in the dream, and it just be an empty seat, then cut to his wife in real life just sitting on the porch waiting for him. My reasons for him not just simply biting the bullet in front of our eyes are sentimental, despite being "too far gone" (sort of agree), the way his character changed in many ways and grew on us is more deserving than just being killed off, like most of the fictional characters seem to be........Season 5 ain't quite living up yet.

Richard was the only character I cared about on this show. This ending really broke me because even though I'm not a fan of happy endings, he deserved a happy ending. I wanted that for him, and to see him die alone underneath the boardwalk, after he had already found happiness in his life, really fucked me up. It only makes sense that after this finale, the show declined. Season 5 was shit. RIP Soldier.
@sayhello2heaven_ Жыл бұрын
The show declined cause HBO essentially fucked em over and forced em to cram 2 seasons worth of storytelling into 8 episodes. The quality did dip as you say but this is one time I don’t hold the show runners responsible.

Took a page out of The Wire’s playbook. BE was very underrated. Show was great. Didn’t like the time jump or reimagined ending for Nucky. But I understand the reason for both. HBO cut funding and the ambiguity of The Sopranos ending Winter didn’t wanna play that card again etc. But all in all season 5 was solid and showed two things, changing of the guard and pasts catching up to us.

Blame it on the show's name, "Boardwalk Empire," I mean it focused on the life of Nucky Thompson (Nucky Johnson IRL) and Atlantic City (obviously focuses on places like Chicago or NY too but for the most part AC) and by the shows end (IRL) Nucky was pretty much done with criminal activities (as prohibition ended in 1933), and was sent to prison for 10yrs via tax evasion (got in 4 though), went on to live a pretty nice-normal life in AC with his wife and brother/family, and was still the Nucky AC loved.

Pretty nonsensical to have Richard miss his shot and die like this, a highly seasoned marksman-WW1 combat veteran who's personally killed well over 75 human beings before he even stopped counting, coincidentally gets nervous and anxious as all fuck and kills the wrong person entirely..? The ONLY logicsl explanation could be is he didn't have his German sniper mask on his person; you see he never kills another human being with his bolt action rifle without the mask in the show, besides when he saved Tommy from the Cat House (unless he did have it on him there too), otherwise it seems to just be a piss poor attempt at keeping one of the main antagonists till the series finale and showing Chalky's downfall.
