Excellent video. Very informative. Thanks for explaining in such great detail. I have a large power boat, but this helped me with what I need. I'd rather you over explain, where I can fast forward if I need to, then to skip over a detail that you may think is not important.

I don't mind your long winded style at all. I kind of like it... relaxing in a way. Never thought to use the coal chisel technique. I have heard people use heat to loosen the stuffing box. Your thoughts about a heat gun as a persuader if necessary? Currently, my boat drips once every 25 seconds, after sits for a day or two. I bought a 27ft Catalina 1986 two years ago. 200 hours on a new Westerbeke. Thanks much.

A GOOD TIP IF YOU HAVE TO MUCH WATER COMING IN THE BOAT; Roll up a cigar size with play doh, then roll it with saran rap. Go in the water and stuff it between the shaft and the inlet of the opening. That will slow down the water from coming in the boat.

great video ... super chill vibe ... buying 42 Pearson - 1st sailboat in a while - owner says the westerbeke 58 is overheating - any ideas? ... is the westerbeke 58 = perkins 4-108? ... amazing resource you are providing - THANK YOU
@sailboatcareandrepair2 жыл бұрын
The Westerbeke is actually a Perkins 4-135 as I recall42 Pearson is a nice bay, well done. There are a bunch of overheating possibilities but always start simple. I fixed one boat simply by opening the cooling water seacock. Make sure that you have water flow, not water in the oil and then the tougher stuff, boiling or replacing the heat exchanger or exhaust elbow. But always simple first

Hey I just bought my first sailboat, I did the through hulls and most of thebplumbing and electrical. I completely forgot to do the stuffing box but we'll I had them put my boat in the water yesterday and noticed a small drip coming from the stuffing box here but it's not as easily accessible. I've watched this video twice and it looks easy enough but I was wondering if there was anything I should do for peace of mind
@sailboatcareandrepair3 жыл бұрын
Try a half a turn of the nut tighter and see if you get lucky. If not , . . . Kiss your wife or girlfriend, buy the grease in advance and jump in!!! The first time is scary but after you see it in person, you will be fine. And you will be able to help your buddies.

Yeh, it not much. Unless you have a 6" or bigger diameter shaft, it isn't that much different. I mention it as a minor warning just so that nobody worries when a larger shaft let's more in.
