Sail Cloudy Bay

Күн бұрын

Series of videos which covers maintenance jobs during a 7 week visit to Cloudy Bay in Spring’21
This Part 4 has a rather strong plumbing theme.
- Replacing seals on the hydraulic outhaul cylinder
- Replacing impeller on the deck wash pump, and re-plumbing
- Replacing pressure safety valve on the domestic hot water tank
- Re-plumbing the domestic hot water tank and various manifolds
This extensive boat maintenance took place due to Covid pandemic which on a negative note caused us to defer our next sailing adventure to autumn 2021, but on a positive note gave us this opportunity to get Cloudy Bay’s systems in top shape before we cruise more remote parts of the world.

Well, I nearly lost a mouthful of lunch the 2nd time around when it started leaking again. I sooo know that feeling, been careful, methodical, made sure everything was right THIS TIME! Only to find something else. I did laugh out loud. Thank you for all these videos. It just shows what can be achieved by sticking at it. Especially since the bottom of that tank has been bugging you for so long. Honestly I expected to see all new fittings and a new tank when you cut back to that third time. But no! well done Glen.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment John. New fittings did indeed come to mind. The trouble is you cannot buy them here in USA - the threads here are all NPT and those were BSP. I would certianly have paid the relatively cheap price to replace them rather than go through all that. That said, it was not the fittings themselves at fault, it was the sealing of them. Now I know, dont mess around, just use something like Locktite 275!

Excellent maintenance. It's really amazing how confident and methodologist you are, showing exceptional ease when it comes to dealing with each and every technical issue on the boat, irrespectively its nature and complexity. Hi Glen. I'm glad it's not just me with getting pipe fittings to stay watertight. These jobs are literally the bane of my existence aboard Talisman. Two things I've discovered: 1) 5200 Fast Cure is the only way to go. Normal 5200 takes something like 72 hours to cure, and that's way too long. Plus, it really does need to cure at least partially before exposure to water. Even sea water pressure around skin fittings and ball valves won't hold if the 5200 is still uncured. It works its way past. 2) Permatex thread sealants, even the High Performance version, require a completely torqued fit. If you can't get that then they will absolutely leak. Finally, in looking for LockTite 275, it appears it isn't distributed widely in the USA. Did you bring yours over, or did you find a local supplier near Herrington?
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I could only purchase Locktite 275 in Europe. Same experience with Permatex. Useless unless totally tight thread And totally agree on 5200. It MUST cure fully before using. I think that was my mistake. I was too impatient.
@SailingTalisman
@SailingTalisman 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailCloudyBay But you were tenacious as always, and you have to respect it. It's why you have to do all this yourself. There's nobody out there that will take the time to do it right, even at full price. One other thought. Talisman is a first gen Oyster 485. The 485 had a run that lasted from 1993 to 2001/2, so almost a decade. And our biggest problem is frozen/seized parts. Just getting these parts removed, cleaned, and reassembled goes a long way towards keeping them serviceable. And how did we survive before Tefgel? I envy the cleanliness of your engine room and other spaces. Keep up the good work. Hope to cross paths in the future (we just arrived in St Thomas from Bermuda a couple of weeks ago).
@Amerona
@Amerona 2 жыл бұрын
A plumber told me never ever use teflon tape. If you backing the threads the tape will be destroyed. Use lingarn. The lingarn make some friktion so you can place the pipe in right angle. And that in combination with Loctite 577 will do the job. Like your videos.

Fearless, as usual. This has given me the confidence to tackle my leaky Bene321 bilge manifold. Does the water heater get a name now it's caused so much trouble and been in and out several times? I sailed on a boat years ago that had Desmond the Decca, McClatchy the autopilot and the self steering was called the Child.

Hmm good question. We did start off naming things like that. The dinghy was horsey, the shopping trolly pony. But parts of the boat, no, we havent gone there yet! But it I were to name the water tank it would be an unrepeatable name or somethign like Davey Jones .... as in, thats the locker it will be visiting!

Silly move bashing seal, use Piston Ring Compressor & HF to lubricate
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 2 жыл бұрын
You may well be right Shane. But at the time thats all I knew how to do it. I did use hydraulic fluid (HF?) on the seal though. Then giving is a gentle "persuasion" is the way we did it when servicing similar hydralics in the industry I came from. But now that I google piston-ring compressor, I will certainly try that next time. Thanks for the tip.

Glen , a lot of sailors who own boats with Selden equipment are indebted to you for providing the information and instructions on how tackle these maintenance projects , I know I am. How far away are those freshwater pumps away from the water tanks . Mine are 15 feet or so away . Do you have to ever prime them. Tayana guy. Sv bohemian

Hi Brian, I think mine are about that distance too. But I've never had to prime them. Maybe its because they are mounted low down, likely only 1-2ft (30-60cm) above the top of the water tanks.

There has to be a reason why you do not use Teflon tape or plumbers paste. I would like to know you reasoning. Not saying right or wrong but I have never seen Loctite used on plumbing before.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 2 жыл бұрын
Bottom line Aytac, I've tried it all and nothing works at well as Locktite. But it has to be the right locktite take a look at this: www.silmid.com/Documents/MOD%20GUIDE%20Resized.pdf ) Teflon tape only help reduce friction so that a tapered thread connection can be fully tightened. A fully tightened taper thread is designed to hold a seal. If you back that thread off, even 1/8th turn, the seal is lost. Plumbers paste: tried lots of different types. They all rely on you getting the thread totally tight. Getting threads totally tight on a network of fittings that all need absolute orientation is impossible. Some threads (infact most) cannot be fully tightened and at the same time be aligned correctly. Hence they WILL leak unless a good thread sealant is applied. So this is where something like Locktite 275 or 3M5200 comes in. Once cured, both with hold orientantion and a seal. The beauty with loctite is that is gains ridged orientation within just a minute and a good seal within a few hours. 3m5200 only gets seal and a locked orientation once fully cured, which is several hours, even for the fast cure. Slow cure is over 72 hours.

What’s the advantage of duralac rather than tef-gel on the spreader rivets? Won’t those stainless-steel inserts for your mast step corrode against the AL mast? Why not just use titanium inserts & bolts and be done with the worry of galvanic corrosion on the mast? What were those fittings on the H/W tank - brass, bronze, naval brass? Did you end up using Loctite 275 on all the metal connectors?

Duralac dries and stays for ever. Tefgel tends to wash away after a few years.
