Matt, I built two boat sheds now using old billboard advertisement tarps they have advertisements on the one side and all white on the other. they're extremely durable and if you have a company out in Washington they'll gladly give them to you because most of the time they just go in a landfill. Typical size is 14 ft x 48 ft. it'll take several but they work great and last for years and years

My friend has a two-stall garage filled to the brim with old tarps I'll see if I can do some digging around and find some big ones over the weekend

I have done that, out of London to cover a trailer and drove it to Portugal, over 2k kms... in my experience the paint concerning whatever was the advertisement, started to peel off. Still happy to reuse and delay the carbon footprint, albeit spreading micro particles through France and Spain roads! I only noticed the paint coming out, half way the trip. In your case no road endurance. Should last longer. Size is not a problem, I used 2, you can figure out as per availability, it's free material, just your labour to sort out and install, and keep us all entertained 🤩 For Duracell purposes, you might want to consider: 1. Ask the "supplier" about the pealing/longevity 2. Leave the add facing out so any pealing doesn't contaminate the fiberglassing, painting etc 3. Being the U.S., and coz you are youtubing... ensure there are no conflicts with the advertising company, brand, whatsoever, in writing. Maybe the advertiser will sponsor you!? 🤣🤞

The Gothic arches you've made are exact copies of what I and my uncle made in 1973 for his 60ft green houses. His arches are still around and functioning as intended due to two reasons. We made an arch shaped bathtub into which we poured a 50/50 mixture of PBA glue and water. We let them soak but I can't remember for how long. Secondly we painted them with oil based paint. These arches have spent 50 years in the high humidity greenhouse environment and still live today. The wood used was soft wood but not cedar.

Dear Matt, I am amazed out how resourceful and talented you are and the massive amount of work you guys have done. You have been very inspiring to me as I took on the task of building a custom cosa and carbon bowsprit for my beloved “La Gloria,” a 1987 C&C MKIII. I watched your bowsprit build videos dozens of times while designing, building, and installing my sprit. One think I did different than you was I did not go with the external struts for extra strength for the vertical loads of the asymmetrical and code sails, and the downward loads of the anchor. I used 4, 3/4” carbon fiber pultrued rod as dowels that went through the y sections of the sprit, through the hull, and inserted into 2” homemade g10 with two layers of coosa all laminated together with epoxy and 1700 biaxial glass. Where the dowels go through the sprit arms I created struts that are made of 3 layers of coosa laminated together with 1700 biax, and then covered with 1700 to the inside of the sprit arms. I then drilled the holes in the arms. After laminating the sprit to the hull with 4 layers of carbon and once it had cured, I drilled the holes through the hull. I then glued the backing plates to the inside of the hull and after curing, I drilled the holes through the backing plates and then glued with thickened epoxy. The reason I am telling you all this is that I see you have had to think about how you will finish the exterior of your sprit with the struts, so I wanted to create a different solution that was easier for me to blend into the lines of my particular boat. I’d be glad to share photos with you if you’re interested. Mostly though, I want to say thanks for your hard work and dedication to the legacy of Mike Plant’s Duracell. Obviously a work of love. Taking her all in from stern to bow, the transformation is glorious. Aft ship is spacious and functional and much improved over the original and the bow looks tough and really adds to the overall attitude of the hull. My sister in law created a company that uses used sailing boat sails. If you got just a few old big sails could be a great reuse; a little cut and sow, your good to go!. Good luck with the cover, white polytunnel might not be a bad idea, you would get plenty of natural light through but you may need to put somthing over the beams incase it snags and tears. Hi Matt, One thought about the tarpaulin. It's going to be very heavy to handle if it's one piece. Better to use 2, 3 or even 4. Here in Scandinavia we cover our boats in the winter with thick ones (600 gr/m2 or more). The issue is to put them on, because they are heavy and you'll be lifting and unfolding them over the structure. Trust me better to do it in segments. Shrink wrap is reusable. And recyclable. This would not require shrinking. And it can be repaired and will be waterproof. And will provide light. Tarps will be much heavier.

I haven't read other comments so I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this about covering the shed but billboard tarps are large and very durable. More durable than heavy duty tarps you buy in stores. Also very affordable. Turn the side with print inward for solid color outside. I think they are both white and black. I live in Georgia and see them go for about $40 a tarp and they don't look very worn at all. I think they are 14ft x 48ft so it will take more than 1 or 2 but still something to consider.

Amazing workmanship as always throughout the yacht but for me to throw a spanner in the works. I would sacrifice some headroom in the aft cabins in order to have more headroom and comfortable seating in the doghouse, apart from that you have the perfect yacht

It might be an idea to make provision for attaching guy ropes at the top of each gable so the roof can be snugged down if high winds are forecast. My friend built a bigger but similar boatshed and had to use wire cables such was the windage. The weakest vector component will be lengthwise

I suppose I'm way too late, but you maybe could go to the farmers who grow hay for dairies. They often roadside their baled hay in big stacks along the edge of the field. These stacks often look about the same size as your shed. They even have companies that are in business to rent out and put on these big tarps so that the hay farmers don't have to own them.

Of all the design elements that you have shown in this video, the one I think you might regret is the area with the extremely high seating just inside the dog house. Even with foot rests I think you will find that sitting in those high seats is not going to be very comfortable; it never is for me when sitting at the bar at Outback, waiting for a table, and I’m 6’ 5”. I know you designed it the way you did in order to maximize head room in the quarter berth areas. Hopefully I am very wrong in this. One other thought: in 60’ of boat is there no way to have more than one head?

we could have chosen to have a second head, but would rather have other spaces. In actuality, it's really only about 45 feet of living space because of the water tight bulkheads.

Look into grain pile tarps. Here in Michigan, the grain elevators cover piles of corn or soybeans with gigantic white, very heavy reinforced tarps. I don’t know how much new ones are but at the end of the harvest season they usually get rid of the old ones. We have some old ones and they are white on one side and black on the other, and are very thick and waterproof. Maybe contact some local farmers if you have any in your area

As to your tarp, two ideas come to mind, one being the large tarps made for flatbed trucking. These are heavy duty but may be more than you need. The other is pool liner. The mfg. of these can probably fuse together one large enough. It would be heavy enough (20-25mil) and not too expensive as edge beading and color would not be needed. The stock material is white vinyl.

No right angles in any marine project!! Wow. Also, the videos are wonderful and really flow. Have you seen any actual working examples of composting toilets on yachts ? I have experience of one at a camp cabin off grid. It worked fine if urine separation was done. Trying to use one with the boat healing could be very difficult though. There's a technique of how you place your anatomy to achieve placement of product into either main chamber or urine collection funnel. Doing that on a moving boat is a task I don't fancy trying. Also, the urine container would be liable to overflow if the boat was healed when it was near full.

With a 50 x 70 tarp you will need a crane to lift it up, even the heaviest of tarps don’t last forever, I would just bite the bullet and use boat shrink wrap, cheers and good luck.

I don’t know if they do it in your area, but you can look into buying secondhand billboard billboard tart. It’s waterproof it lasts for a long time. I’ve seen one other person that built his vote uses that to cover the boat when he made his structure and it lasted up until the time For him to sell away

I covered my frame shed in Maine with a heavy, white, vinyl tarp similar to those that cover dump truck beds. Made to size by Harp's Tarps, so not re-used, but I think it was 8 years before any spots on frames or ridge chafed through, and when they did they were pinholes. If the tarp were in use for less time I expect there'd be many ways to re-used afterward.
