I have to admit, I'm quite jealous. While I'm dreaming of the day I can live on a beautiful boat, my wife is very apprehensive and I love her too much to ask her to be uncomfortable. But I can still live vicariously through your videos.

love this tour and you have a great boat. (I’m a bit of a envious bayfield 29 owner here) But I feel you have not paid enough attention to the positives of the full keel design for a crusing boat that far outweigh the drawbacks. One is comfort and the other is safety. A full encapsulated keel with keel attached rudder is just safer then deep thin bolted on keels with unprotected spade rudders. And the bayfield with its relatively shallow keel design (for her length) also allows you to go Confidently where a deep fin keel boat would risk grounding and keel damage. As for not pointing high to wind and being slower. Well that’s NOT just the hull and keel design. It’s also how she is rigged. (Note nothing wrong with your choices here it’s a crusing boat so comfort and convenience has along to be said for it) with that said you could rig the boat to sail faster but it requires getting rid of the conveyance of roller furling and go back to Hank on head sails and a larger sail inventory. The bayfield 40 has a relatively modest sail plan and mast height but she has the potential of a lot more canvas then you currently set even when all the sails are out. Also a working jib and even a large Genoa would point higher then the yankee and staysail combination you have also Hank on sails each cut for there purpose work better then roller furled cut sails as they are cut to work well both reefed and full but it’s a compromise and this effects sailing ability. They are asked to work well in light air yet be strong enough to not be blow apart when it’s blowing 20 knots plus. Again it’s a compromise. So you might be surprised just how fast the old girl could sail if rigged with speed in mind (of course you would spend more time with her rails in the waves and much less comfortable and your man cave birth would be full of sail bags. (You could even have a mizzenmast staysail and third headsail rigged but that would be more complicated and would need to be done to keep the sail plan balanced. My point is many people make blanket statements about full keel triditional style boats like the bayfield and Morgan’s and westsails that they are slow and attribute this to the full keel design and heavy displacement but the truth is they don’t need to be it’s a comfort over speed that was prioritized in the rig design. Modest sail plans make sail handling short handed safer and easier. So ya as rigged and sticking with the as delivered rig and sail plan they do will for their designed purpose these boats are under sailed when the wind is light but are less likely to get their crew in trouble whorled they wait too long to reef whe things get crazy out there. They take care of their crew instead of the crew having to work to take care of the boat. But you can get them to sail very well but your going to sacrifice some comfort and convenience of sail handling to get her moving quick in light air and to windward, (they of course have their limits as a modern fin keel with a high lift keel design and far less wetted surface is always going to pint higher but don’t be fooled comfort is not happening when beating into the wind anyway and a full keel boat having to sail a few degrees more off the wind will get their crew to their destination much more rested then a fast light boat that was pounding tighter into the wind all passage. She’s a moving home not a Volvo ocean racer. Love her for what she is
