My wife and I, both 70, have a Catalina 350 booked for the first week of August in the Whitsunday Islands, in Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Maybe I'll post again with some thoughts after we've had our fun. This video has really given us a clear idea of the interior - did you buy it?

I'm boat shopping too. I discounted the Catalinas and Hunters at first. My broker took me to see both of those brands. You get a lot of boat for the money. They both seemed well made.

Same story for us ✔️ I always thought Catalina as a boat for an afternoon sail at the lake, but their construction is solid. Which models did you look at?

I looked at Hunter 41 & 45 and Catalina 42. I asked Randy of Happy Together his thoughts on Hunter since he owned a H49 for 3 years and sailed the entire Caribbean in it. Randy's comments were "I would sail that H49 around the world. It is rock solid and so well designed." Randy. If it's good enough for the Happy Together crew, it's good enough for me !!!

@@SV-DEDICATED I guess I don't understand why I hear negative comments on the Hunters 🤷‍♂️ They have great comfort appointments, people like Randy sail them hard, and they're a great price. Sounds like they're great boats ✔️

@@TheFosterJourney 4.5 years . We also sail it every weekend 10 months a year. We are on Clear Lake, League city. Same neighborhood you are looking in. I have been sailing since I was 12. Lots of experience offshore and coastal.I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

The Catalina looks very similar to our Bavaria 36 (which is very beamy and 37.5 feet long) so I think it may well be a comfortable boat. Ask to test sail it and see what you think. If you like it and it feels comfortable then why not buy it? It does not matter what anybody else thinks - they are not on the boat.

She sails just fine. We sail in the UK where it is highly tidal - 30ft tidal range, 5kt tidal streams, etc - and Salty Lass does just fine. Now, I have no idea if Bavarias destined for the American market are any different from European ones, but I would expect the differences to be in fit-out rather than the hull. Watch the first 2 mins of this and you can see for yourself the sorts of conditions the boat copes easily with (you can ignore the rest of it as we where in port. Actually - Gaynor (who owns the port side of Salty Lass, I own the starboard side) has just pointed out to me that we did consider a Catalina once. It impressed us, but when it came to boat buying there was none around. The seem a bit rarer on this side of the pond.
