Boat Trailer Conversion - Boat Trailer to Utility

In this video I take a boat trailer that was once converted into a utility trailer and further modify it into a dovetail equipment style trailer. I add two new 3500lb axles that needed to be cut, shortened and welded back together. A new pressure treated deck is installed. New trailer tires are added.

Would you grind the paint off or burn thru it ? I was taught to clean bright steel before welding it .

Well done. Those plates are actually called ‘fish plates’. Gussets are the inner corner supports.

idea for your next video: put ramps on the back that fold up and stand at the back. I'm sure there is a name for those, but that would be so handy to have attached ramps on hinges.

The dovetail seems like it should be strong enough, although the 3/8” gussets probably should have been beveled and preheated due to the size of your welder. I was kind of surprised that you chose to downhill weld the axles. The trailer turned out nice, and the work you did was clean.

A lot of work ! I think I would have left the axles alone and welded a 2x4 tube to each side x the length of the trailer including the foot and a half extension . Boxed in transversly and put the rails back on . ???

The angle iron for the cross braces? The cross braces are 3/16.

You can register any trailer as a "homebuilt" trailer here in Ontario Canada

Where I live you can register any trailer as “home built” and get a title. Bit crazy I know, but that’s how it is.
