My dad used to take me out over the surf in a 17ft open bow 55hp. I told him once my friends dad said that boat had no business in the ocean. My dad said, “eh, look what the big boys are all dragging behind em in case thier fancy boat can’t handle it”. We survived, although I’m not sure it was a good idea.

So, from watching a whole bunch of these out of fascination, it seems like coming in is an exercise in "surfing" the ocean swells moving up the inlet. Especially if you're going against a lowering tide. Going out seems to be more about keeping your speed from getting out of control and keeping the bow from going too high or too low. Oh, and not killing your crew when you go flying and smack back down.

Geeat video. Waves not too bad. The volume of water compared to other days are incredable. The bigger boats took it well. As did some smaller ones (must be experianced skippers). Otherwise everyone else stayed in. Cant mess with mother nature. She always wins. Nice to see no idiots on the water other than the one with the loose anchor. It was broken ... they don't typically belch that much black smoke, and it looked odd going out and coming back. Might have been a survey run ... I know there are at least two for sale in that area. Hull needs a little care given to it too.

It looked like he was timing the wave , the boat actually stayed pretty level compared to others , and black smoke is exactly what you want to see when you accelerate hard on a diesel engine , It is probably better to charge in though , if you time it wrong or you do have a mechanical problem half in , you would be in trouble.

I believe some of the most good moves from the captain were from the couple little boats. They realized that the water was just too bad to continue and they were able to turn their boats around without endangering themselves our the people aboard their boat. I have seen big boats try to turn around and end in disaster.

First boat takes some swells, not rough after that. Check out Sebastian Inlet on an outgoing tide with swells coming in. That inlet gets dangerously rough, almost lost a boat there.

You want a sketchy and tough place to get in and out of, try Depoe Bay in Oregon. 30ft wide entrance surrounded by reefs and breaking waves, in the side of a cliff... the guys that fish out of there are known as the hole in the wall gang, and rightfully so.

not for Miami. this type of large swell is super rare, South Florida doesn't see these big swells often, mostly we see shorter period with mostly wind driven waves when it does get rough, not nice big and smooth like this, the surfers were in heaven.

That is a 30' Tollycraft Sedan apprx 1978 or so. Originally twin 350 mercruiser direct drive...the swim step has been extended and outboard added. Maybe engines removed?

If these are Haulover Inlet's biggest waves, it's really not that bad. Check the waves at the bar anywhere the Coast Guard's decided a surf rescue station is required.

yep, they are not that bad compared to many places, there is just more traffic and more unskilled traffic than most places.
