I’m one of those people who cruised with my parents from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. The world has definitely changed, but let’s take a moment to discuss a thought-provoking topic, truly a bourbon or rum topic, the end of the world. One thing that often gets overlooked is how the global pandemic shifted the attitude of relatively friendly island nations toward cruisers. In places like Grenada, people were abruptly kicked out of anchorages, health visas became mandatory, and other regulations popped up overnight. Many of those restrictions have been slow to roll back. Now, about that “end of the world” scenario. As much as we tech enthusiasts love a good hockey stick graph, the depopulation events described in dystopian futures are terrifyingly steep. These scenarios often predict that 80% of the population could perish within weeks or months. From there, the remaining 20% would rapidly decline to just 3-5% within a year. That’s truly the end of the world. In such a collapse, the ability to organize and motivate at scale would evaporate quickly. Sails would become essential because, even in some Mad Max-like future, fuel supplies wouldn’t last long. The process of extracting, refining, and distributing fuel depends on a supply chain that would already be broken. Survival patterns would shift dramatically. Cities, dependent on complex supply chains, would empty out. Plains and forests would also become less viable due to their resource demands. Coastal and riverbound areas would likely become the new hubs of survival. However, even that would face challenges. In the U.S., for example, the river system relies heavily on powered flood control infrastructure. Without it, the system would degrade and potentially self-destruct within a few seasons. Looking back on those 1970s cruising days, survival at sea was simpler but demanding. All you really needed was a reliable chart, a solid compass, and an exceptional watch. Speaking of watches, do you have a mechanical timepiece with +/- one-second-per-month accuracy? Not a smartwatch, but a purely mechanical marvel? That’s the kind of tool you’d need, especially since GPS would fail within a year or less without human operators to maintain it. I’m not a prepper, but as a cruiser, these are the kinds of things that spark late-night conversations under the brilliance of the stars. Those moments-sharing thoughts, reflecting on what could be, and marveling at the universe-are truly unforgettable.

Your biggest reliance is on consumables and spare parts. As soon as your RO membranes are exhausted you are out of water. Test your theory by seeing how long you can last before bringing any replacement part, tool, or consumable onboard your boat.

This is the most original, enlightening and fun episode I have seen on anyone's sailing channel in years. I'm thinking a Nuclear powered submarine for a small family, with a groovy movie theater, with deep sea diving pods when needing to fish for monster size fish that long live below 20,000 leagues beneath the sea. If you could find self generating sea shells that would also work to power for your submarine. Thus far, no one has ever found self generating sea shells except after eating magic mushrooms. Personally I'm building a large house at the bottom of the sea, complete with an octopus' garden. Best of luck with you Apocalypse.

My preference would be for something like Delos 2.0 or an aluminum single hull with twin keels similar to what Odd Life Crafting is building (for beaching, or the oceans going dry). As long as you have surge suppressors on all electrical lines entering the hull, you would be pretty immune to your interior electronics getting fried by an EMP. Jade's last point is a good one, you could get started for less $$$ on a sailboat than you could with a land based compound. As a side note learn and PRACTICE celestial navigation, including the use of a sextant and paper charts!

I think the most relevant thing about bugging out a boat is how much time do you have get ready to do it. If you had like 1 hour to get to your boat and cast your lines it might not be so great. If you had a few days it would be better. It would be a means to get somewhere else faster as the highways would be packed. Let's just hope it's not ever the situation and I think your video was great at pointing out the can and can't of it all. Too funny! 🤣🤣

To survive a world wide catastrophe a sailboat could or could not be a good option. However, you need to keep in mind their will be others out there doing a similar thing. You also need self defense protection from that never ending bad guys that will try to take from you the things they want. It could be a good option to float around but you also need the food and water the rest of the survivors need as well. It could work out, but it would not be as easy as living off the land, though far less chance of the bad guys ganging up on you. Not all people will be bad, but enough of them to make life for the better prepared to be more difficult. Your mechanical items will work only as long as time and function last. However, it is good to give people information on what might be a good option.

I've heard ciguatera is pretty common in fish around reef areas. You'd need to study up your local "safe" fish if you plan on surviving at sea. Larger oceanic species are usually okay if taken in deep water. Red Snapper are typically bad yet there are some areas like Tonga where it's apparently safe to eat. So surviving on fish around an island is a risky proposition unless you know the local "safe" species. I think mooring off an island would be the best bet for food variety and access to fresh water as others have mentioned, at some point your water maker will crap out.

The reference to the water will burn, is referring to the natural gas vents that are on the ocean floor, leaking natural gas and reaching the surface, and then eventually reaching a city, where it could find a ignition source, or not necessarily a city, but reaching land, where it could find an ignition source, and that would be a mass explosion the water would burn
@johnbreen56682 күн бұрын
Not necessarily. Could be something break the water apart. Wouldn't take long for the hydrogen to find an ignition source.

Okay, it may be silly, but it was fun. My husband and I were those hippies in the 70's who sold our house and went off in an Allied 39 to escape the masses. (By the way, the house was about 10 miles from the White House and less from the Pentagon. BIG mushroom cloud.) We never considered the zombie nor EMT scenario, but the idea of war loomed. We did exactly as you talk about: we caught water; we had a community that helped in so many ways; and we were well aware that we were always at home, and she would take care of us. We speared fish but vegetables were hard to come by. No computer aboard until this century, and it was for periphery things. Although the first time using a chart plotter on the first tablet and it put us exactly where we wanted - in the dark - we were sold on new technology. [Surprisingly, my husband's job was in the early computers, when they filled a room and were fed paper cards.] Your subject is relevant today and will be tomorrow. For myself, I worry about the emt, the nuclear, and hoping those old punch cards don't add to the trash in the oceans.

FYI, aside from the hypothetical 1,000' + heights (no one survives these), most tsunamis pass through the deeper ocean areas only a foot or two feet of height. Comet impacts in the ocean are a different issues, and even in such a case the initial height of the impact splash, as tall as it might be, will rapidly be attenuated over distance. Additionally, A huge percentage of the world's populations are located in the deltas of rivers and along the coasts of the world's continents (and islands). I am a serious student of impact-related scenarios, and produced a show on this, after interviewing some of the most brilliant scientists in the field, THIS is my 'take-away." Hence, when it comes to most tsunamis, OFFSHORE (deep water, especially beyond continental shelves) cruisers are among the safest people in such a scenario. You might want to correct comments to the contrary? : )

There is a guy on YT that sailed around Africa with his wife for years. He did some videos on how to "harden" a sailboat. Specifically to repel boarders and prevent break ins at anchor. He detailed motion alarms on the deck. Had custom hatches and doors installed that were stainless steel. And he had clever ways to carry firearms on board and avoid detection. But keep in mind. Sailboats are slower than every other craft. So you will never outrun pirates. And sails can be seen very far off...

Skeeters... Skeeters are interesting... There is a long expired Johnson Wax patent of a friend's dad (who also invented DEET and OFF) and did lots of research on how it works. What DEET does is cause a resonance in their little brains that is like an epileptic fit in the skeeters and they fall to the ground (not hurt). So he experimented with all sorts of stimulus to the skeeters brain. Just about anything works but it bothers people or dogs or something... but near IR doesn't bother people. So, if you covered your boat with Christmas Tree LED light chains with the visible LEDs replaced with near IR ones like in you TV remote and drove the LED chain off of a variable frequency power you could drop all the skeeters right out of the sky around your boat. They tested it in the Minnesota Boundary Waters. The frequency for each species of skeeter is different usually between 550Hz to 1500Hz with more of a dark than light cycle. So, you could have a narrow on pulse and just vary the off time so the full cycle varies in frequency. In the boundary water they were both muskie fishers so caught their limit every time they turned it on in their canoe. The skeeters fell and the fish started feasting... It would really improve your fishing. One could well imagine the rim or top deck of a boat having IR LEDs embedded in it.

INTERESTING about being on a boat during a attack. they say the most dangerous location to be in, is 50 miles from a nuclear explosion. i am guessing that even outside of that area, you could still have problems. now as far as boats go. i would think a duel hull or a tri hull boat, would be more stable than a single hull boat. there is so much that can be said, but i will drop it now

EMP - one thing I am not sure about is your carbon fiber epoxy. It might shield a bit. If it does... grounding it would be needed. If the whole boat was carbon fiber you could EMP the whole boat depending on the type of EMP. If it's a microwave EMP bomb.. not likely as the microwaves will get through small holes. If it's EMP from a nuke bomb on the edge of the atmosphere or a pulse from the sun or elsewhere in space...that is long wave pulse. Then a carbon fiber boat would protect you. Actually a carbon fiber boat should be like being in a Faraday cage. The bad part of that is with normal usage. It would make it tough for cellular and wifi from outside the boat. A Faraday cage type boat would protect you inside from lightening but wires going in and out are a problem. If you had time to move your solar cells inside your boat you could protect them. Circuit breakers work well with EMP. NPN type transistors or PNP are mid-survivor but CMOS or MOS is a NO unless shielded. (Gold foil best but aluminum foil would work in a quick need)
@JagLite2 күн бұрын
Funny video! Thanks for the laughs. I think you are correct, keep your boat ready to go at all times. Just to leave a dangerous area. If things all fall apart there will be a lot of people on boats trying to survive and it will be the "strong" (pirates) who take from the week (the rest of us) to survive. They will not be alone, they will have many people, large boats that they killed the owners of and took, and they will be heavily armed. Of course things will be the same on land so...

If it was that easy. You'll need to learn to navigate without all your electronic toys. The people who own the internet, gps, etc, own the nukes. As fare as food, diesel, etc, that do supplies the islands are the same warmongering. Then, you will have to worry about piracy on the open seas. You can live on your boat until things start breaking down, like your solar panels or the membranes in your water maker, your sails, ropes, and any parts are made of plastic. What are you going to do if you need to pull your boat out of the water to fix or reseal it. Think of it this way: you're living on a floating island that can and will sooner or later will sink!

keep in mind that most islands have way too many people on them that the land can support. About the only Islands I know of that can totally sustain themselves is Tonga. Most of the land can be farmed and they do a lot of farming. Even Islands like the Philippines import a lot of their food and I doubt they can sustain themselves. The smaller volcanic Islands definitely can't sustain themselves.

Fish+Lasagna sounds yummy! Should I call it Fishagna? Fisagna? I wonder if Jade´s Fisagna new recipe will taste as good as her Pizza recipe, from another episode! =9 You ask what we think... I think we all think we know who we are, until we are faced with situations and decisions we never seen before. Airplane pilots have a better than average idea, scenarios that were never created in a simulator or in real live (CACTUS 1549, AF447, or so many others) split-second decisions that may doom or bless you and many others together on board. Knowing that you are a group, and every individual's decision is as good or bad to yourself as well as much as to every other group individuals. If one is sad, the others might not necessarily become sad as well, but will at least have to work more, to fill in the gaps, or something. Personally, I have thought once or twice in my life if I would take a bullet for someone else. And although I have the will, right now, in the safety and comfort of my family's home, I could never be 100% sure if I would be fast enough, would such a trial ever present itself. Also, it´s a huge battle of logics - either you take the bullet to save someone you care, become instantly the bravest and cowardest one for sacrificing your own life and sparring yourself from living such a difficult/sad/lonely... or, you hide yourself and let the problem at hand take away your loved ones from you, becoming instantly the cowardest for not taking the bullet and strongest for enduring such a difficult/sad/lonely aftermath. Maybe this is what they meant when they wrote "between the cross and the sword"? Either way, it´s so easy to enter a flat-spin downwards, and loose your holds very fast. But hey, don´t worry so much! "Random chance seems to have operated in our favor," cuz (at least for now) we have internet and we can get so much better help whenever we want! I´ll leave it up to every one of you reading the comment, to find all the homages and puns... ; )

An EMP would fry all of your fancy electronics leaving you with celestial navigation and lodestones

OK, so that was different. What's got you two worried about this sort of thing?

Well if you pay attention to the right wing in the US it's because Biden is not letting the Russians win and gave the Ukrainians authorization to use US supplied weapons to attack targets inside Russia.

Actually, I don't have much doubt that you two would survive as you have learnt to be self sufficient. Your greatest enemy would be illness.

If you survived a nuclear blast and couldn't get away from the nuclear fallout. Radiation poisoning would follow then the grim reaper. Sorry no surviving.

Nuclear blast causing world wide problems unlikely the Sun going nova or a really big solar flare frying all the modern equipment more likely.

Funny episode, i liked it. Question: what if the entire satellite constellation goes off while offshore, what would you do? Do you know celestial navigation?

Most modern generators have tons of sensors that will be wiped out in an EMP. They will not run.

Cheers and thank you for the former Marine catch! It's also a good thing the Exxon Valdes is no longer a potential threat (Waterworld reference)
