I thought NPR made a mistake when they added in the canned laughter.

Honestly, the staff here at Classic Bob and Ray hasn't exactly drummed up enough excitement about their careers to confidently say whether their audience was alive or dead. And while we appreciate your curiosity, calling it “canned” feels like adding insult to indifference.

@@ClassicBobandRay I didn't mean it that way. The problem with the NPR tapes is that we don't know if the source was radio shows or (more likely) the Broadway "Two and Only" performance. The old radio shows had no laughter, except occasionally the crew at the studio. Let's just say that the laughter of live audiences (if such there were) appears to have been "augmented".

Real Bob & Ray fans were smart enough to laugh without having to be cued. ;-)

@@jacquesuntel5401 The NPR shows were recorded in the studio specifically for NPR. There were a couple of concert recordings like A Night Of Two Stars, but the main show was recorded by Larry Josephson who ran the Bob & Ray website (died in 2022)
