In hindsight, it was okay since Buckland was also selling out arenas. People want just plain good guys to win back then as kayfabe was still pretty much hidden during that era. It wasn't until the Hogan era that characters became the main appeal.

Guys used and evolved other people's personas since wrestling has been around. Grahama used a lot dusty Rhodes and Muhammad ali himself. Gorgeous George is probably the greatest original innovator as far as characters are concerned. There was no one like him then or before when he did that gimmick.
